If you just want to let them fight then I fail to see the reason to recruit new players and have the fights judged when judges or even other participants can create silly fodder characters to fight with.
Or you know, we could just go on to the second round where they'd get to fight.
And the fact that good players are getting knocked out is the nature of random brackets. There's a whole lot of luck involved in tournaments regardless if people want to admit it or not. Sometimes two contenders have to go at it early in the tournament, it's the nature of the game. But that's the luck aspect. Anybody could have gotten those byes, anybody could have faced the favorite to win the whole thing. It's fair unless someone manipulated and cheated the system, which we assume they didn't.

You might assume that because you're naive.
Still, this boils down to two different radical opinions, mine being that if you're in this tournament this scenario should play out like this:
Judge: Your opponent didn't show up, so, you're getting a by. Contestant: A by? A BY? I don't want a by, I WANT TO ******** WIN!

Put it this way. I volunteer for, Round 2 on, if someone doesn't have a fight, I'll just say "Okay, you won, but you're going to fight and you're still gonna get judged."
Or something. I'd rather there be fights than not be fights.

A bye doesn't mean s**t to me, I've been in hundreds of different tournaments my whole life. It happens, most people who frequent them understand that they happen.
No one ever complains about it because it's not worth crying over.

Wait, wait.
Your answer to the tournament's problems is to regulate it to the mediocre level of mainstream tournaments, and force it into the accepted mold instead of letting it be something extraordinary?
No wonder I keep wanting to tell you, shut up.
---
Yeah, Rosa... that idea was rolled around too. The only problem with that is that even if they're judged and fight someone they still automatically win. It's not like because their opponent didn't show up we can send in an eliminator to break all their bones ( as much as I'd love that). So if a Judge fights them... they still win, because a Judge can't continue in the tournament if they win.

I could've seeded the brackets, but then people will be crying over favoritism. See, I can never win. ._.
Anyway, I'mma just sit here and eat my ice cream.
