John D. Rockefeller was born on July 8th 1839 in Richford, New York the second of six children. His father William Avery Rockefeller was a traveling salesman. He sold mostly questionable items such as cures for cancer. In 1853 the Rockefellers moved to Strongsville, OH where john entered central high school in Cleveland. In 1855 he left high school to take a business course at Folsom Mercantile College, completing the 6 month course in half the time. At 16 years old Rockefeller found a job as an apprentice book keeper earning 50 cents a day. In 1859 he left to form his own business with Maurice Clark. In 1863 they invested in an oil refinery with chemist Samuel Andrews. Rockefeller married Laura Celestia Spelman on September 8th 1864 in Cleveland. In 1865 he sold his share of the business to Clark and invested fully in another refinery and formed the partnership of Rockefeller & Andrews. In 1870 Rockefeller, his brother and a few other partners started the standard oil company with John D. Rockefeller as its president. By 1872 Rockefeller and standard oil had eliminated 22 out of 26 competitors. The more Rockefeller gained the more he gave away, by his very first paycheck he was giving 10% to the church. Rockefeller also gave $80 million dollars to the University of Chicago turning it into a world class institution by 1900. When he was young Rockefeller’s two greatest ambitions were to make $100,000 and to live 100 years. He died on May 23 1937 only 26 months away from his 100th birthday.
