The reason it makes sense to me is that I can compare it to Soul Cal 2 when they had a different guest character for each one.
To which I answer: 19/20 people I know who've layed the game all agree Link was FAR better than Spawn. Despite Spawn being the edgiest of weapon users this side of Ghost Rider (wouldn't that be a fun battle to watch? 2 Hell Commandos against each other.), Link was a lot more user friendly, and owned on levels Nightmare would cry about.
Then, it wasn't a choice of consoles. Sure the Cube was crap, and only had a few shining gems that saved it from the trash heap - Smash Bros Melee, Twilight Princess, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Crystal Chronicles- but there never has really been a case here when anyone doubted the GC version was better than the PS2 version.
I have a similar argument for Final Fantasy Tactics. Even though they made a nifty GBA makeover of the game, slapped sprites on it and a cutesy story, it the Advance version was a great game in it's own right (though paling to the original, who sadly sat in the shadow of the more popular Final Fantasy VII). The same is true for War of the Lions. While the Advance version, and likely it's coming sequal will undoubtelly be awesome games, the PSP remake of the original game, which is a complete imrpovement, stands heads and shoulders above, no questions permitted on pain of death.
