I'm guessing that the Dawn of War 2 novel is a let-down then?

Lt. Brookman Blood Ravens seem to have an accelerated class where a marine can have company command in his early thirties and be trained to use all weapons, all tanks and fly Thunderhawks as novice scouts. Yeah.. the DoW 2 novelization is a real improvement over the s**t that Goto shovelled. rolleyes I've had it about up to my neck with the effect DoW-related books/backstory are having on the fluff. talk2hand

Main problem is that Dawn of War 2 (the novel) is written by a renown author who turned the story into something that loosely follows DoW2 and has the marines so overly descriptive and whatnot that it is really little Johnny's first Space Marine novel. All the implants are described in minute and boring detail several times in a row and all marines have bolters that shoot Hellfire rounds, because that is the only thing that can hurt Tyranids. I'm trying to like it hard enough to finish it but MEH, it is too predictable on matters such as captain Thule's fate and what happens with the extra characters added in.
It would've been okay, but the moment the author said that novice scouts were able to fly a Thunderhawk he lost me. Even more so when they used T-Hawks instead of drop pods like in the game and for some stupid reason thirty marines don't fit into a single T-Hawk.
Bah, rant over. Don't buy this book unless you're desperate.

I think the game was a good enough story teller on its own to be honest. My only problem is that they expect me even if it's for 'gameplay's sake to believe that there's only 4 marines in a tactical squad? To top it off, your ship has like 10,000 nameless faceless marines there but you can only have like 12 marines at once? I wouldn't lose like 500 marines if maybe you gave me squads of 12 or something. More firepower=less casualties.

I like the low numbers versus impossible odds angle. The game actually lives up to the background. surprised

The squad numbers aren't fluffy but it fits the core mechanics really good. Plus the power of the marines in game really honours the background.

I agree, althou I do have to admit abit that space marines might be abit over-powering in the game,
but in fluff and novel wise, it takes alot to take down a super-human with implants that increases it“s survivalbility in the most hars enviroments and injuries that would take down and kill a normal man, encased perhaps the most strongest armour in the universe.
Basically a space marine is like walking tank in itself with a gun that will blow either a hole into your chest or takes your upperbody with it. :O
Novels and Inquisitor-game is perhaps the closest to describe what space marines really are, considering how well you throw your characters stats and give it a power armour or take a space marine and throw random stats well, leaving your oppoment thinking; Holy [piip] and I“m suppose to kill him?!?! Marines in Inquisitor were the s**t fo sho! We had one run by our GM and it was used only in the most dire of situations. He had brother-sergeant wotshisname hunt down a rogue inquisitor and we all had to chip in as hired muscle and retinue members to keep him off the boss.
He barged straight through a booby trapped corridor unscathed.
He smashed through four walls.
He picked up one of our heavies and snapped his neck with ease.
He left exploded carcasses in his wake wherever he went.
The inquisitor was ******** toast.
"And now you gits and tarts know why you can't run a space marine in a game of inquisitor!"

Looks like a great diorama piece that Stormbird.
I'm going to assume everything there is attached, so that you can't acutally use anything.
