Joel is a mercenary character working for a company called Tactical Solutions, which I like to think would be professional in the way they handle contracts. He's not exactly a "commander" type, but he has done enough reliable work than he can lead a small platoon of his own on mid-risk level missions.
You wouldn't have to pay me OOC, just IC, because that's how I like to do things. And I always jump at the opportunity for some RP beyond simple fights.

Only if ordered and paid too. dataDyne Cavaliers have a cyber-gease on their minds that prevents them from acting outside of the confines of their contract, which stops things such as 'wanton rape and murder' and 'not pulling the trigger out of half-drunken moral realizations'.

Well, I was thinking more like... medieval halberdiers and that sort of thing. Classic formation of armed spearman and swordsman, like in Berserk.
If one of you guys wants to oversee the main operation ( forces split on two fronts, resources, tactics ) and the other wants to work closer to the fray ( leading a specialized squad of stormtroopers or a crack-unit of assault specialists ) then that's completely fine with me. I'll pay you guys each 5k for whoever gets into it and upholds their end of the bargain.
IC, OOC, all the same to me.
As for the clerics themselves... only the ones that forcefully try and stop the mercenaries will be harmed. After all, this is more of a road-closing operation then it is a direct assault.

This seems (to me) like it would be a lot more fun to RP than some 'tactical operations special ops' thing where everyone has a machinegun and a black leotard. Line up your spartans, have your cavalry ride past dragging a net, archers at the top of the hill, etc.

Oh man... then I have the perfect character for this. Pre-made, ready to rock, and with plenty of battlefield experience from both a tactical and in-your-face aspect. He's also got some sort of moral reasoning up in that head of his, so there's a 90% chance that he won't ******** this up... so long as he has his WADKA.
