"This will definitely be a first for me," Caleb announced. "Only time I've ever seen them was in books and stories. But those were just illustrations," he added.

"They're certainly incredible creatures," Maddy said as they approached Sycamore's lab. "but nearly all of them are incredibly dangerous."
They entered the lab to find it empty.
"Sycamore is no liar. Whatever research he's doing, it seemed he took his whole staff with him."
Walking upstairs to Sycamore's office, they found a box labelled 'Team Aqua'. Maddy grabbed it and shoved it in her handbag.
"I'm really glad we can trust the Professor, otherwise I'd be very sketched out by all of this."
The retrieval complete, she turned to her comrades. "Do you guys have any errands you need to run in town while we're here?"

"Nothing comes to mind" Rose answered "But I'm happy to try something if you want to. I was bored before coming here anyway"

Caleb could only imagine what Sycamore was up to that required his entire staff to help out.
"Nah. I have everything I need for right now," he replied.

As they left the lab, Maddy took out her TADS and pulled up a map of the routes near Anistar City. "Well, I'd say we should have enough time for a quick Pokémon battle." She told them. "Would you guys be more interested in Route 17 or Route 18? I'm not too picky." They started back towards Anistar, taking the same road back.

Caleb stared at the routes on his TADs. The pokemon on both routes were tempting to him. Ice, Dark and Grass....Rock, Steel, Ground, Fighting and Fire. It was so difficult to chose.
He let a coin decide for him instead.
"Heads..." he muttered to himself as he checked the side the coin had landed it.
"Route 17 for me...but I wouldn't mind either."

"Route 17 is closer..." She said. "But there seems to be more of a variety of Pokémon on Route 18."
She pulled her handbag strap further up her shoulder.
"We'll drop the scanners back at the house and then we'll make our way to Route 18. Sound like a plan?"
The scanners were weighing her handbag down and the strap was uncomfortably biting into her shoulder anyways. Sycamore couldn't design them to be a little more lightweight?!

"Alright," Caleb nodded. He definitely wasn't going to argue about either route. Route 18 though...
That opened up even more options for Caleb. He had been thinking about searching for a Sneasel on Route 17. It seemed like today wasn't the day for that.

Once they got back to Anistar City, Maddy quickly rushed them all to the house to drop off the scanners. She placed them on a end table near the front door, so they'd be easily found by anyone who wanted to do some scanning later on.
"Okay. Now that that's done, let's head to Route 18!"
It didn't take long to get there. The route was heavily forested and had a river flowing directly through it. Maddy led her comrades to the nearest patch of tall grass.
"Okay. Let's fight, say, two Pokémon each. Catch one it it's allowable at your rank; if you want to, of course."
[Reserve.]
Maddy sent out her Sliggoo as she was challenged by a Lairon.
"Muddy Water!"
A wave of dirty water washed over the field, buffeting Lairon and hitting it hard. Lairon retaliated with Heavy Slam. It had the Heavy Metal ability, so the attack dealt quite a harsh blow.
"Muddy Water, again!"
This time the attack reduced Lairon's accuracy. It attempted to use Heavy Slam again, but missed this time. Lairon was panting hard, getting very tired from the fight.
Maddy reached into her pocket and took out an empty Ultra Ball. Tossing it at the Pokémon, Lairon was sucked into the ball.
Shake...
Shake...
Shake...
... Ding! Lairon was caught!
Maddy recalled her Sliggoo and went searching for another Pokémon to fight.
She eventually found herself face-to-face with a Gurdurr. Maddy sent out her Fletchinder.
"Acrobatics!"
Unhindered by a hold item, the attack did massive damage, almost knocking the enemy Pokémon out in a single blow. Gurdurr retaliated with Stone Edge, hitting Fletchinder just as hard. Both Pokémon were extremely tired and the battle had only just started!
"Finish it with another Acrobatics attack!"
Sure enough, Gurdurr fainted and Maddy returned to her comrades.

Hearing the bosses orders, Rose spotted two Lairon, so Rose sent out her Frogadier and Gible.
"Gible, use dig, Frogadier, Power-up Punch." Rose ordered, gesturing to the two charging Lairon.
Frogadier met the tackle attack head on with the fighting type move while Gible disappeared underground and attacked from below with good results. That Lairon was stuck on it's back now, for a whlie, at least, so Rose ordered her Pokemon to repeat those attacks on the one Lairon that was still standing and the two additional attacks made it faint.
The other Lairon was on its side, seemingly just tired. Who knew what it had been there before coming to fight them. Rose threw a Pokeball at it.

Once they had arrived on Route 18, Caleb walked for a short while until he came upon a somewhat shiny looking pokemon. Not with the color of its body, but the way light was reflecting off of it.
Caleb's mouth opened, "heck yes..." he muttered. He sent out his Fennekin. "Use Flamethrower..." he whispered to her.
The grazing Lairon looked up when it was attacked, letting out a cry before it charged at them. "PSYCHIC!" Caleb shouted. After getting the Lairon pinned by the energy from his Fennekin's attack, he tossed an Ultra Ball at it.

Maddy clapped her hands together as everyone finished up their battles.
"Well, I guess that's that." She said, turning to her friends.
"It was fun. It was also nice to do something that wasn't completely Team Flare-related."
She looked around, not really able to think of anything else they could do.
"I'm done for the night, that's for sure. If you guys want to do anything else, feel free!"
Her hands in her pockets, she briskly made her way back to Anistar City.
