"The story is that Toby was his caseworker almost explicitly, so when it came down to it Dari decided to base himself off of him. We gave him the 'him' and a voice that fit-- I don't know, it's just interesting to think about." Lori shrugged. "I don't actually think he'll come out female. All these years of being identified as male have to had made some impression on him, and he's got half of Toby's mannerisms as it is."

"He's learned to be a guy," Maia smiled. "I'm a little nervous about it. Do you think we'll recognize him? We didn't, with you. And you don't look nearly as different as he will."

"Well, I've had that beard for years," Lori teased. Ugh, and he missed it too! It was so odd to have a clean-shaven face every morning. He'd start growing it back immediately once Dari was set. "But of course we will. We'll be the first people to see him, and then we get to watch everyone at work be very confused and feel like horrible people for being afraid of him."

"You look as young as Luca does," Maia smiled at him. "I think you look nice either way, though." That's right. They would be the first people to see Dari in his new form. "They should," she said, "They are awful people."

"It's an elf thing," Lori said with a bit of a skewed expression. "At least my type can grow facial hair. Luca's going to look 16 forever. But thank you."
"No, Maia," he said then with a chuckle, "They're not. They're misguided, ignorant, naive, stupid, whatever, but they're not awful people. You say that because you love Dari. We all do. So it seems bad to us."

"Poor Luca," Maia shook her head. Looking like a teenager forever was probably as terrible as it sounded.
"They haven't taken the chance to get to know him," Maia said. "If they had, they wouldn't be afraid. People aren't afraid of me." She shrugged, "So they shouldn't be afraid of Dari. It'd be like being scared of you. But! They won't be anymore, if this works."

"It's just his looks," Lori said a little sadly, "People have nightmares about things that look like him and, real or not, you know... I mean I look mostly human, and so do you. But when he shows up human? I think he'll be very happy, not upset with them, like."

"People working for the fbpi should know not to judge a book by its cover," Maia sighed. Especially since they worked with a sorts of entities. Kind ones that looked scary and scary ones that looked harmless. "I know. He'll be so happy. We're going to make a cake when we get home, I asked him what he'd like to do first."

"Humanity isn't ready for us. That includes the people who work with us sometimes," Lori said, then grinned. "That's what he said he wanted to do? Make a cake? Do you think he'll be able to taste? Hell, to hear? Or smell? I should have asked!"

"He wants to go to the grocery store, and make a cake," Maia said. "Possibly! I hope so. It'd be nice. I first got the idea to research because he'd said He wished he could experience taste." Maybe the faerie queen would be available to answer questions? "Maybe we still can."

"Maybe," Lori said, "but apparently nobody's done this in several centuries. I'm not sure anyone knows any more. I'd kill to have been able to document it but I didn't want to mess anything up. I'll do some retroactive writing and document the change itself. I hope it's painless. It should be. It's magical."

Dari couldn't feel pain, so she was counting on it being painless. It couldn't e like Toby's transformations. "She's over a thousand years old," she pointed out, "I'm sure she's seen it happen, if not performed it herself." She paused and looked to Lori. "Are you looking forward to seeing how all this works?"

"She'd never done it on something like Dari, though. She said that much. Just explaining him to her was hard, especially through her messengers, and of course I am! I'm a big paranormal-nerd. I can't wait until he gets his eyes back and we can actually do this."

"I don't think anyone's seen something like Dari," She said, smiling slightly. He'd come from another world entirely, he was unique and special. "I'm excited too," she said. "I want to see Dari happy. And this way, we can help others if they need something like this."

"We'll have to bring more elven fae, though. She seemed to think that'd make a difference," Lori said. "It drained me like you wouldn't believe. Like a big heal. Or maybe we'd just need more magic-users.
When the pair reached the hotel, Seamus had a few choice words for them. Fortunately they all sounded like "meow" so nobody was especially offended. He did brighten at the idea of Breyer, though, and then demanded some kibbles before they left.
"Do you want to grab your boyfriend a change of clothes?" Lori asked Maia. Would it be rude of him to grab Dari a set too? They should buy him a joke shirt for his first transformation.
