Dari could hear and could feel Maia coming. He returned the hug and stood.
"I think you did, briefly," he said, "Give me your face, Toby."
"Where are your eyes?" Toby asked.
"Percolating." Dari gestured to his belly beneath his 'ribs' where something milky was clotting. "They take the longest."
"Really? They were the first thing you got at HQ."
"Well I had no idea what was going on at the time." He went to Toby and they shared some intimate time that they hadn't had since Dari's first humanization, and as Dari rubbed and felt Toby's ears, his own began to form slowly.
"Hey, what do you mean, 'you think we did briefly?'" Toby asked.
"I fell unconscious. I know what dying feels like, second-hand. I've never been unconscious before, so I suppose I died."
Toby made a bit of a face. Dari slapped him lightly. "Stop that. I'm alive now, aren't I? I don't think I want to try again. It was the strangest-feeling thing I've ever experienced."

Maia froze once she'd released Dari. He'd died? DIED? Briefly? What? The selkie studied her companions, and frowned. They weren't trying that again. It was too much of a risk.
Maia sat on the bed, trying to comprehend that. Dari had died, and come back. "I love you Dari," she said. How was she supposed to react to him dying and returning, though? Was he still the same Dari? He seemed to be.

Dari turned his head to face Maia. She didn't sound very happy.
"I love you too," Dari replied, "and thank you for all of this." of course had he been any different of a being, maybe he would have stayed dead, or wouldn't have died at all. He worked on a mirroring ear while feeling Toby's nose and starting his own. Toby turned his eyes to Maia worriedly. The poor thing. He would have been much more upset if Dari hadn't come back, though. They had him now. That was all that mattered at the moment.

It was decided a while later, after Lori returned from his call with Seamus, that the group would go retrieve the sidhe while Toby remained with a reforming Dari, and as soon as the alien had his eyes back and the ring was finished they were headed to Breyer.
Lori had no problem with Maia tagging along. He knew how much she loved Seamus and she was probably worried about him after all. They walked then back to the car, got back into their normal clothes, and headed for the hotel.

Maia was glad for the distraction. The walk to the car was just as nice as the walk to the rath had been. "I'm glad we're going to get him," She said, "I was worried he'd get lonely."
Once they reached the car and changed into every day clothes, the selkie found she was feeling much better."Do you think he's raided shelves? Toby said he might."

"The Bureau may owe the hotel a bit of money before this is all over," Lori said with a slight smile. Only slight, because it could be true. "I wasn't expecting to have to stay over. He'll get to see Breyer this way, though. He's never been in a place like that."

"I don't think anyone was. We would've brought more along," Maia said. Changes of clothes and things. "He'll be so excited," she added, smiling. "He seemed to like going shopping with us."

"Well Seamus knows the slums of Scotland, the HQ, and that's it. Usually cat sidhe don't ever get to see the world, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't want to, given the chance. Shopping here isn't much different than shopping back home but he was so happy that night." He smiled over to Maia briefly. "I just hope he doesn't end up wanting to stay. I'd worry."

"Has he gone shopping back home?" Maia asked, curiously. "Do you think he would?" she asked, smile fading. "I hope not." Maybe she'd bribe him with cake. The elves in Breyer wouldn't know to give him cake, and what if he ran into an unseelie?

"Only to the pet store," Lori said. Animal laws were much stricter back home. "I don't think so, really. He's pampered where he is and he'd be fending for himself in Breyer. I'm not even sure he'd know how any more."
Finally the dirt road turned to asphalt.

Maia nodded, relieved. That was true, Seamus was pretty spoiled. He had multiple beds and a big box of toys, and he got to go on vacation with them. "I wouldn't want him to stay. He could get hurt and we'd never know."

Lori nodded. "I don't think he would want to stay." He began to turn a corner.
"So what do you think about this whole ordeal, huh? I keep trying to picture Dari as full-human and all I can come up with is him painted-up or projected.

Maia paused at the question. "I don't know," she said, at last. "I can't imagine. I'm so used to seeing his projected self, I'm not sure what to expect. I hope it works." None of this would have been worth it, if it hadn't. And she didn't think She wanted to risk trying again.

"She-- the queen, I mean. She said it would project his truest self...?" Lori shook his head, "but I'm fairly certain his truest self is plasma inside of a jelly-like substance with glowing orbs for eyes, so I'm not sure what'll happen. And we say 'he,' but he's told me more than once he had no gender identity. What if he becomes a woman? Or something totally sexless?"

"I think she means the self that's in his heart," Maia said, looking to Lori. "The person he wants to be. I don't think he'll become a woman." She shrugged. "His personality doesn't fit. He's told me He could switch, but I've never seen him as any less a man."
