:::She sort of eyes the bananas curiously, but answers his question before mentioning any interest in them:::

Well, the most qualified are chosen through rigourous testing. The greatest achievers and most intellectual candidates are selected, and of them, years of testing is required. The be a part of the governing body is perhaps one of the greatest and most honorable achievements in our time.

Oh yeah? What if people don't like them - the ones they chose?

:::Naturally Cora doesn't understand the question:::

What do you mean... like them?
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2005 6:47 pm

*Luke spells it out as they stroll through the market.*

You know, what if they think the government sucks at their job? What if people think all the guys in power are dicks? Then what happens?

Uhhm... :::She tries to think that one through in case she's missing something, bug gives up eventually:::

I don't understand. What kind of sucking to you mean? And, uhm, what is a d**k?
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2005 7:09 pm

*Luke laughs.* Damn, girl. I'm gonna have to keep an eye on you tonight....

*He clears his throat.* Let me put it this way. What if the masses hate the goverment? Like they always do. What happens?

You just point out in the testing that - *Luke dons a mocking voice. He sounds a little like Agent Smith from "The Matrix".* "Well, Councilman Jetson scored a 90% on the Gene-Splicing Quiz, and a 84.5% in his understanding of Astro-Physics. Therefore, the fact that he's a Rat b*****d has no relevance."

:::Cora couldn't tell if Luke was being serious or not, but she humored him all the same:::

Well... I'm not sure how grading works in your time. But, I assure you all the quallified candidates are required to have an H.G. Overall of at least a 3000. To give you a comapirson, last time I was tested I scored a 1237 H.G.O :::a little proudly::: Which is 21 points over the average for people my age.

Oh, and, it is not a matter of hating our government. They simply keep order. I understand your cinicism. I've learned all about how governing bodies have blundered all throughout history. I assure you that all that has been rectified in the future. :::She realized her tense was strage::: Or uhm... WILL be... rectified.
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2005 7:30 pm

*Luke raises an eyebrow at her. She really had a hard-on for her current government. Which made sense in a way. I mean, she did have a pretty active role in it.* Yeah, well, pardon my "cynicism" but last time I checked history had a tendency to repeat itself, babe. *Luke grins, using some of his information from class.* Ever hear of a guy named Karl Marx?

Yes, a historical philospher for whom the term "Marxism" is named. Correct me if I am mistaken, he believed in the inevitablity of change in society.

:::she smirked knowingly:::

Have you ever heard of Thituse Laster?
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2005 7:42 pm

No.

*Luke caught the smirk.*

Uh-oh. Is he someone from the future?

Precisely. Hundreds of years from now, he becomes famous for his arguments, proving the fallibility of Marx's theories...

:::The smile fades though, she doesn't remember why she is so proud anymore:::
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2005 7:49 pm

Really? How bout that.

*Luke saw some cherries and bought a bunch.*

Thanks. *He said to the vendor.*

Makes sense. Marx's arguments were fallible. *grins smugly* And thank you for mentioning that, it actually helps prove my argument.

*He eats a cherry and spits out the seed.* Okay, every time somebody tries to put Marx's philosophy into action what happens?

*hands the bag of cherries to Cora.* Here try them. Don't eat 'em all though. I'm gonna need some for later.

:::She'd trailed off in her own thoughts when Luke handed her a bag:::

Hm...? Oh.

:::She didn't answer. She reached her hand into the bag and pulled out a clump of cherries. Half paying attention to them, half still in her thoughts, she managed to seperate just one... and she stuck the whole thing in her mouth, chewed (with minimal difficulty) and swallowed:::

:::then it was back to her thoughts, without even commenting on the cherry:::
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2005 8:01 pm

It goes to s**t. *He answered for her.*

Marx himself said that history didn't win battles and history didn't screw up his theory. People did. Human beings did.

You may think what you've got in the future is goin' great. I'm biased, but I'll be the first to say that the future probably IS better in some ways than things are here.

But you're still people. You've got your lazer blasters and your space-suits. You're genetically engineered, but you're not perfect. And I bet a couple hundred years from now - someone could be talking about your government the same way you're talking about mine.

:::She snapped out of it finally when she realized Luke was discussing it pretty seriously:::

Hm..! I- I'm sorry. :::Letting the sounds she just heard him say process into actual words, then thoughts:::

Mm... yes. We are people. But my society had sacrificed enough of what was considered 'human error' to consider themselves a perfection among society... the only society left, the only society needed ever again.

But... I see now just how much was sacrificed... and I also realize that the only reason we've escaped Marxist theory up through my time, isn't because of Sir Laster's proofs. It is because anyone who threatens the perfect logic, is removed from the equation.
