In sixth grade i started on flute and 1 month in i had chosen snare. I've been playin snare since and i'm a junior in HS. My director, Steve Floyd, says i'm one of the best. My bf Brandon also plays snare along side me and damn he's good. This summer I get to try out for U.S. Allstar Band which, by the way, has like 100 snares trying out! SNARE IS THE WAY OF LIFE. FACE IT, IN MARCHING BAND YOU WOULD BE LOST WITH OUT IT. btw, Marching Band rocks my socks! mrgreen

We just had championships and got second. I'm so mad. The school that beat us beat us by a quarter of a point. A freakin' quarter! We had a 90.25 and they had a 90.5. It was so damn close.

LeonTheEviscerator Yay! A percussion thread!! I've been in marching band pit for two years and was in pit for winter drumline last year. Then again, I played in a percussion ensemble in elementary school...so I've played percussion on and off for eight years. Oh yeahhh! Pit rox de eternal fluffy sox!!! I am personally a marimba freak myself.

Actually, it appears as if no one has been here for quite some time.*slids a perfectly clean finger across a table* Eeeew, dust! Let's hope the marimba has a cover on it, lest I should go on a mad virtual killing-spree. twisted

Does anyone's concert of marching band use any Sabian ice bells (7" or 9")?
I'm just wondering if these actually exsist and if they're actually avialable for the general public.

Fruit Jammers I love playing the marimba with 4 mallets! It's so much fun to have three octaves all to yourself. I actually had to play vibes in my school's jazz band because no one else could play with more than 2 mallets. We have a great batterie, because nobody ever wants to do pit for more than one year. We actually did really well at PASIC the last two years, so I can't complain. DUDE!!!!! eek Much wootness, I love my marimba!!! Have you named yours? I know, I know, the school owns it, but does the school play it or love it as much as we do? I think not. Which grip do you prefer? Stevens or Burton? I personally like Burton, chords sound so cool, and we, the 4 mallet players, are almost the only people who can play them alone. Wind instruments have to be accompanied by other people playing the other notes in the chord, whereas we can play the whole chard solo, wootness or what? Ever played a Burton exercise called 'Rain'? It's totally wicked sweet! Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm a little enthusiastic about my instruments... Marimba isn't the only one I play though, Vibe is a close second to the marimba, and xylo is third by a fraction of a fraction of an inch. I'm actually pretty well rounded in the percussion area, heh, heh...

DKDarkness I heart my Marimba!! I only know 2 mallet sweatdrop but I'm learning 4 mallet 3nodding 2nd year in marching band and 3rd year in winter drumline in South Cali ^__^ Anyone doing any ADLA competitions? What part of S. Cali? Ever heard of Cathedral City High School? We won first place in all categories at the Palm Springs Competition last seson, including sweepstakes and people's choice...ahhhh, the memories! I had a chance to be Pit Captain, and my mom made us move to Alabama! Arrrghhh! evil waaa! crying The bands down here don't go to competitions, they don't care if they're in step, and their worst crime: they don't use their pit on the field!!! eek I was soooo mad when I found out that if I wanted to remain a percussionist in their band, I would have to switch to snare or bass, they don't use the tenors either, not what most people call tenors anyway, the quads and quints...They use the mini-basses, yeah, yeah, they're tenor drums too, but ya know... it just ain't the same I love my marimba too, have you named yours? Mine had two names because the high end and the low end are like two different personalities, don't ya think? Then I forgot the names when I moved *screams in frustration*

Elizabeth07LHDL i love being in the drumline (LHDL rules) ne ways i am in the front ensamble and omg i love it at OMEA state finals we got all 1's in EVERYTHING.. we have an awesome drumline.. even tho the laps around the frikin huge school and parking lot at 7 in th morning wasnt my cup of tea.. i hate tea..lol. and the practices in the rain were tiring. and getting up at 5 in the morning to get to school for practice 2 hrs b4 the of the band gats there... but it was the beat. i loved it. we did the newsies show and the dl instructor wrote most of the percussion music. extremly hard... but i wouldnt trade it for nuthin!!1 p.s. the marimbas and vibes ROCK if u think 4 mallets is hard try doing 6 mallets......lol ninja the drumline ninja will throw a drumstick at u... Have you ever noticed that the rest of the band seems to think that Pit has it easy? It makes me mad! We practice longer than they do, we tire out our wristsAND arms AND legs, and we get less brakes than they do AND we stand all day long, no sitting at a marimba unless you're in a wheelchair or somethin'. I've even sprained my wrist several times on a sixty-fourth note run, it wasn't easy to learn and i seriously doubt if any non-percussionists could handle something like that... considering they mostly use their finger and we use our entire arm to play. Does anybody agree with me here? Has anybody ever given y'all crap about 'havin' it easy'?

Well, let's see here... I started band in 6th grade as a snare drummer, but then I broke my left index finger two weeks before the christmas concert and had to learn the concert bass drum part to all the songs (except African Noel, which would be played with one hand on an African drum so I didn't have to worry about that. I just had to make sure I stood on the right side of the drum.) Anyway, after 6th grade I quit band for a while because I figured they'd expect more out of me in junior high and would force me to practice more (I played everything perfectly in 6th grade but got a B all the time since I never practiced at home. I didn't NEED to practice! It was too easy!). After junior high I decided to go into colorguard, which turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life (no offense to any guard members who might be reading this). Then after that I joined the pit since I had minimal percussion experience and I was assigned to concert bass drum for just about everything. I've played other auxiliary instruments (triangle, suspended cymbal, claves, etc.) but I've always specialized in concert bass drum. Junior year, I was a leader in the pit (that's one rank below section leader) and in my senior year I was one of four section leaders in the pit (long story involving the two section leaders from the previous year getting pissed since they weren't chosen for section leader this year. I think one of them hated the idea of being ranked below me even though I was a SENIOR and she's a junior!)
My little brother is also a percussionist. He was originally going to do trumpet but he couldn't do that buzzing thing with his lips so he went into percussion like me. He's was the 5th bass drum this year and next year he'll be 6th snare (And the only sophomore on the snare line! We're all so proud!). Too bad I'll be in college and won't be around to see it... I'll make mom film a contest and send it to me or something. BTW I won't be in band in college. I've had about enough band for one lifetime, but I'll always have the memories and I'll always be proud of having served my band as a section leader (not like anyone ever listened to me though...)
Oh, and I DO play concert snare occasionally, like for solo competition. Sophomore year I played a class 2 solo and I sucked so bad the percussion director took pity on me and exempted me from having to compete. Junior year I played a class 2 again and got a 2 on it, and senior year I played yet another class 2 and got a 1. Woot! I got a nice, shiny medal for that! *will put it on her letter jacket after she gets her band letter* *already has a letter for something else (BPA)*
