I think that Lex has cracked but has a very distinct and well thought out way to disguise it, to make himself look "innocent" he is a man of business and let's face it he is a pathological liar. But who the heck isn't he is protecting his image from the public eye. In his head, it's all business. He wants everyone to be equal but at the same time he wants to hold the most power. Which in long running battle between superman and Lex Luthor, Lex could never comprehend the thought of having another person (or alien, etc.) hold more power then himself. He lacks the ability to see that money can't buy power, despite what he thinks. Everyone else close to him that has seen the true Lex Luthor has obviously already distinguished that trait in him.
