M'arek frowned. He was slowing down. There was an opening in the droid's defense that he normally would have been able to take advantage of, but he was too wounded to perform at his peak capacity. Dammit. Maybe he'd have to start focusing on another style. If he was suffering this much at one-on-one combat, maybe he ought to try another style that could fill out his repertoire. It was easy enough to practice; he had all the time and resources on Tython with which to do so. So he would. After this bout, when he'd wasted this trash compactor, he'd rest and then begin a journey down a new path of lightsaber combat.

They were squaring off now, in the midst of a vicious exchange of blows they locked sabers and each tried to overpower the other, before M'arek pushed hard against his opponent and tried to step quickly around the side of the droid and outmaneuver it with a hard cut. If --big if-- he could catch it by surprise he could come out of this with his head still attached. Otherwise, he was going to be in trouble. The droid kept building momentum at a rate that was astonishing M'arek, who was accustomed to fighting juyo droids. This one just seemed to be more aggressive than others. Maybe it was a quirk in its programming.

M'arek was growing frustrated. Even wounded, he was still a match for this droid, but only just. If the droid picked up any more speed, it would overpower the boy, and he would be defeated by a sparring droid. He couldn't abide by that sort of failure, and redoubled his efforts to push the droid back despite it taking one step forward every time it swung. It was an odd, staccato battle, each opponent jerkily attempting to maneuver around the other, trying to push back their enemy and take them out. Both were wounded, and both were showing signs of wear, but neither was willing to concede an inch to the other.

This needed to end quickly. The droid was pushing M'arek back, now, and it was all the Mirialan boy could do to constantly keep himself moving toward the same corner. It looked to all the world like M'arek was being overpowered and backed into a corner against his will, but he had a plan. If he could maneuver that monster into a corner with him, and then fight his way out of it, he'd have it trapped, and all that momentum would count for nothing when it couldn't move to attack, left to the youngling's vicious assault without the hope of defense. That was the theory, at least.

M'arek's plan was working. He was slowly making his way into that corner, and the droid was gaining enough ground to grow complacent. All it would take is the right opening. The perfect storm of minor errors that would enable the boy to slip out behind the droid and take it out. He could do this. He had this. There was nothing in his way except for several hundred pounds of metal wielding a solid rod of plasma moving at speeds that the human eye could not follow. Well... When you put it that way.... M'arek mentally shook his head. He needed to focus, not to consider the alternatives to victory.

And then it was over. M'arek's hubris had brought him close to the sun, but he had managed to keep himself aloft. A violent engagement ended with M'arek getting slashed across the chest as he spun his own blade deftly through his opponent's weapon. The droid immediately stood down as M'arek took several steps back, gasping and looking down at the patch of his chest that felt like it was on fire. That was closer to defeat than he ever wanted to come again. But he'd done it. He'd proved to himself that he could take a knight, using juyo, one-on-one, using nothing but shii-cho. He had made himself proud, and proved his mastery of Form I. Now it was time for II through VI.

They had discussed in class how different beings --and, in fact all beings-- possessed their very own Force signature. It was a particular impression that they made on the Force, as unique as a fingerprint. She merely had to focus on her own force energies and the crystal would begin to reshape on a metaphysical level, aligning with her own signature and bonding to her until it was recalibrated to align with another force user. This was the reason that lightsabers from someone else are never as effective as one created and built by your own hands.

She could begin to feel it aligning to her energy, she imagined, and it began to feel a little more like her with every passing moment. She had some slight difficulties concentrating, since she was far too excited to have a lightsaber, but she was slowly getting there. Something about the intimacy of this particular interaction made it easier to concentrate. She felt like she was reuniting with an old friend rather than trying to forge a new acquaintance. There was a subtle changing in her meditations as she felt something new, however. Master Laro made a decision, and stood from her chair, walking toward the library.

Clicked. She felt the crystal begin to give back energy, and she felt herself drawn deeper into a meditation that she had to work to pull herself out of. It was not an easy thing to do, but she managed to pull herself out and back into the real world in time to reach out and catch her slowly descending crystal. It was a beautiful gem, and even more beautiful now that it was truly hers. She smiled down at it and wrapped it up, delicately placing it back into her belt pouch. The girl reached down and pulled out the Healing Crystal next. Leyren stepped into the library, passing by the usual books and consoles, moving to the back of the area where two guards stood posted.

She closed her eyes and tried to reach her own energy out to the crystal. For some reason, she had trouble finding it. She could barely sense it there, despite her proximity, and she figured that that had to do with it being attuned to Master Laro. Vyntyr was not exactly too familiar with Master Laro, to be honest, and her Force signature was still foreign to the girl. She determined that she should focus on memorizing and familiarizing herself with her Master's energies before too much more time had passed. Master Laro bowed her head as she passed the guards, moving into the lightly restricted sections of the library, where she would find what she was looking for.

It was not the world's most exciting endeavor, but Vyntyr wasn't bored; she thought about the last person to have used this crystal; Master Leyren Laro, of the Jedi High Council! She was inheriting not just a keepsake, but a legacy. Her lightsaber was descended from Master Laro's lightsaber, and some day, when she had a worthy apprentice, she would be able to pass along her crystals to them, beginning to forge a legacy of Jedi in the Order, remembered for all of history as noble and powerful wielders of the Force. Master Laro paused a moment before she moved toward a small, secured vault. She entered her own credentials and opened it, removing a book written a long, long time ago by a man who had once been a great Jedi.

Her apprentice: a powerful, mighty and respected Jedi, bequeathing these two very same crystals down to her own padawan, who would carry them into battle with the weight of Master Laro, Vyntyr, and her own master behind her blade. It was an appealing notion, and one that Vyntyr had not thought of before. She'd never given thought to having an apprentice of her own. She had always thought about growing and becoming more powerful and wiser herself, but what point was there in becoming wise and powerful if you held onto it selfishly until the day you died? Leyren began leafing through the tome, setting it down onto a table and re-reading the old words. She studied the teachings of a man who understood the Force more deeply than she did, and how it connected to life in a way that few others realized.

Sure, there were some hermits and exiles who took their secrets and clung to them until they died and took all of their lessons with them, but they were not the norm. Far from it, in fact. Many Jedi felt that if you even considered that you had learned a secret of the Force that you were not only encouraged to share it, but that it was akin to a duty to disseminate the information, and grow the entire generation. It was not considered power to hoard your knowledge, but instead it was power to seek knowledge, and the sharing of that knowledge strengthened the entire Order. Master Laro pored over the tome, and, just as she had thought to recall, the book actually predicted an illness just like this. She endeavored to learn everything about the disease from the man's ancient teachings.

She kept her eyes closed and tried to perceive a difference between herself and the crystal and could not. She smiled and plucked the crystal out of the air, returning it to her belt pouch as well and almost running to be back inside with Master Huyang. The two Jedi Knights who were posted outside Master Huyang's temple smiled to each other as the girl passed, remembering how excited they had been, themselves, when they had built their first lightsabers. "Master! I'm done! I finished attuning the crystals! What's my next step?" Master Laro had read everything in the tome twice. The ancient Jedi had even devised an experimental surgery that might cure the disease... But it would require very dangerous methods. It was almost sure to kill the afflicted... There was a reason this text had been restricted.
