The sound that escaped her when the corpse lurched back to life and draped on her lap was nothing short of shrill and piercing. It melted into hysterical laughter, which ebbed after a few moments of stroking her fingers through his hair. In the end, with his nuzzles grazing against her skin warmly, she fell into a sated lull.

"I loves yeh." Freya whispered, her tone fraught with tentative emotion. "I'm always goings teh loves yeh."

He was used to her randomly screeching at something he did. He was so used to it that it rarely ever phased him or hurt his eardrums anymore (or so he believed). The patrons of the restaurant and the staff, however, were not used to it. Forks scratched over plates, some scarelings cried out in surprise, and one of the waitresses dropped a drink she was preparing.

Now they had all eyes on them. Kettil didn't care and he wouldn't apologize for it, either.

Freya was his Freya and thus perfect.

She didn't answer his question about where her butt belonged but he got something better.

Kettil tilted his head up to stare up at her face and smiled, "And I will always love you. Marry me~."

So content, so hazy, so happy, and then he had to go and give her an anxiety attack.

"Hooter." Her voice hitched up a notch at the sudden proposal, and she bent in to hook her arms around his and pull him up to his seat. Once she could let him go, she picked up her menu, unfolded it, and slammed her head against the table. Then she placed the menu over her head, and because it was clearly soundproof, she started giggling uncontrollably underneath it.

"...That's a yes, then?" Was all he asked as he stared at her after she helped him back into his seat.

Freya's giggles turned even wilder, and she picked the menu up and started whacking him with it.

"No, Hooter! No! No! Bad Hooter! No ring! Did yeh already forgets, hah?" Her tone throughout the whacking was still overly giggly, and just a little jittery. She was starting to have real trouble saying no to him, when he made her heart stutter like that.

But she managed.

Kettil lifted his arms up defensively as she beat him down with the menu and he was laughing even as she said no to him, "You'll have your ring! I'm going to get it for you. So of course I didn't forget."

He would never forget.

"And if that ring doesn't make you happy anymore, I'll get you another one." Kettil said with a small grin.

The menu dropped to the table, and Freya reached out her hands to take his. She pulled them close, and her lips turned down in a thick pout.

"Hooter, marriage is a big deals for my family and yeh has teh does it right. So if yehr thinkings of gettings me a plastic ring and askings me seriously, I has teh tells yeh right now, is not a good idea."

Oh, how infuriated her father would be at a trick like that. "Just.. I wants yeh teh knows that. So that yeh don't does something yeh'll regrets later. Now, don't worry abouts it. When yehr ready, we'll be ready."

She hoped that her wish to have him ask her hadn't inadvertently caused him to take the question lightly. The slippery slope that problem could cause would be.. disastrous.

There was a sort of flicker over his face. A brief moment of hurt that she thought that he didn't take this seriously, he pulled his hands from hers and folded his arms over the top of the table and shook his head a bit, "If you thought I was gonna disrespect ya like that, you got another thing comin'," he said simply.

It seemed Freya picked the wrong words with Kettil. Instead of calming his excitement she managed to wound his pride.

His mood sobered up completely just then.

It was obvious she'd insulted him. Unfortunately, she didn't know how to handle it. The truth was, she'd thought candy rings and light-hearted jokes were right up Kettil's alley when it came to things he might do. If he was so insulted, she suddenly felt like she didn't know him as well as she thought she had.

And that only made things worse.

"I don't knows what's goings teh happens, Hooter. Don't gets mads at me just because I'm tryings teh be careful. It's just how I duu things." She sat back in her chair, and her pout thickened as she sulked. She'd ruined a perfectly sweet and happy moment, but she couldn't even regret it - if it was true, and she really didn't know him as well as she'd thought, then they had no business talking about marriage, anyway. She should have known better than to enjoy it.

She should have known better.

"Can we gets food teh go? I don't wants teh be here anymore."

Kettil raised an eyebrow, "I can't get mad or sulky at you every now and again?" He said simply, the words were pretty indicative about how she often approached him when he did something she didn't like.

Then she didn't want to be here anymore.

....

....

He let out a grunt but said nothing for a moment or two. Kettil carefully and quietly was trying to reign himself back in.

He had a good point. With all the temper tantrums she pulled on him, she shouldn't be too terribly offended about him being sulky. She pursed her lips, and then nodded. "Well, if that's all this is, then okays. Is just.. yeh don't does this often. I don't knows if yehr so upset I should worry or not." It all came back to that one, painful phrase. She didn't know.

She leaned in again, her eyes searching his as she extended her hands out for him to take. "Hooter, don't yeh sees? This is what I'm worried about. I'm not sayings I don't wants teh marries yeh. I'm sayings.. maybe we needs teh has more time. More time teh fights. More time teh talks. Just.."

She let out a soft, whining sound, and slowly slid down until her head was resting on her arm, against the table.

He was softening up a little bit each time she spoke and wasn't sulky back at him or leaving in a huff, all these things added up into him letting her look him in the eyes and letting her take his hand. When she was done talking he simply moved and draped over her and rested his head against hers, "Freya, I wish sometimes you had as much faith in us that I did. If you do, you don't seem to show it when you say that."

Kettil reached and lightly brushed his fingertips over the side of her neck, "Just because I take one joke wrongly during a moment doesn't foretell doom in the future. Any other time I might have laughed it off, but I'm trying to show you just how serious I am about it all."

Quietly he moved and kissed the side of her head, "What is having more time to fight going to do? No marriage is without fights. We have had at least three so far and I am still not running for the hills or refusing to talk to you at all. Just because I put a ring on your finger in a proposal of marriage doesn't mean we have to run right away to the chapel to marry."

He was fine with a long engagement, at least for now.

Kettil's intentions, and his words, were beautiful, and loving, and touched Freya's heart in all the right ways. But they had no power to assuade her from the growing doubt that was seeded in her belly, slowly germinating with every moment that passed.

And so, despite how beautiful Kettil's promises were, Freya did not feel confident. She didn't feel comforted. Her eyes welled with tears, and they spilled out, streaking down her face silently.

"If we got engaged, and we had a fight, and it was too big. And we breaks up. Is more than a break up. Is not something we can just fix the next day. Is like.. an end. I am so scared, Hooter. So scared that I am goings teh lose yeh over something stupid. I know, I know yeh says yeh won't leaves me, and I should has more faiths in us, and I should trust, but-"

She couldn't say it. She'd refused to even think of it, for so long. Shut it out, locked it away, all so it could boil up inside of her and overflow at just the wrong minute.

Like this one.

"The only thing that could drive me away at this point is if you'd run to another boil's arms when mine are open and waiting for you every day you want them," Kettil said with a sigh a hand reached out and wiped at the tears.

Kettil didn't believe there was nothing they couldn't overcome, he refused to believe it. He closed his eyes to the possibility of it, but not because he was trying to deny the eventual downfall of their relationship but he simply didn't see it as something as possible for them.

"If we fight and it was big I wouldn't be the one to break us up. I know that much for sure," he said simply. There was nothing about Freya's personality that made him believe he'd never want to see her again, "We'll fight, we'll scream, we'll claw at each other's weak points because we know what they are, but I will always make it up to you. I will always come back to you. I've made up my mind by now and if you can't accept that ..."

He paused and then just smiled, "You just better learn how to. I'm not leaving. I'm not the other boils you have ever been with. If I didn't feel strong enough to be with you then...None of this would be as it is."

Ah, but these.. these were the words that Freya did need to hear. These were the words that brought her the comfort she so desperately sought in her doubting, insecure heart. Not that they would always be together, and not that everything would be perfect - but that, no matter where their footsteps led, or how troublesome and dangerous the path, Kettil would always come back to her. He would come back, simply because he'd made up his mind to. Because he wasn't like the other boils.

Freya let out a pitiful little wail, and flung herself at him, her entire body curling up into fetal position in his lap. This was where she needed to be.
