She could see the boy over her, see his lips move--but she couldn't read the words of others just from the movements their mouths made. The gist of it was obvious, though; grab hold. Then Ian joined Fritz, and she no longer had to debate the matter of whether she should allow herself to be pulled up. She grabbed her student's hands and vowed to herself that she was not going to let him fail Language Arts and Literacy, no matter what. Even if she had to adjust grades falsely, he was getting out of Hillworth that semester with an A. Then she helped the two boys pull Sheila to safety--just in time to see one of the mysterious people who seemed to live on the Surrounding be devoured by the space whale. "Thank you," she said to the boys; deaf, she couldn't hear quite how loud her voice was.

It seemed only logical to strike out at the monster, so Marienrode did. Try to throw her charges into a pit? Oh ho ho, sir, she would not stand for it!

Virgo threw herself back, but Cancer was faster; she threw up a shield between Chronos and the space whale, protecting Virgo in the process. For her efforts, Virgo watched horrified as Cancer was swallowed by the whale. Too late to extend her protection towards the other Zodiac; but it wasn't too late to try and help her. She set Chronos down and smiled at the Princess. "Stay here," she said, and then she ran forward to leap towards the Giant Space Whale. It was so huge, she wasn't sure her single punch did anything; but all the same, she had to try to free her comrade.

GIANT WHALE GIANT WHALE

Anandi was just sort of but not really almost coming to somewhat kind of terms with what was going on. Virgo sort of made sense. Gemini kind of did too, in a strange "I have to be on some sort of controlled substance" way. Anandi didn't like not having a clue about what was going on. It made her panic. Things were kind of under control until a giant space whale showed up and tried to flatten them all.

Someone in a ballerina outfit created a shield, or something, to protect them all and then something horrifying happened to her. The Indian student didn't know how to react or what to think and when the whale's tail came down upon them, she did what any girl her age would have done.

She shrieked and ran.

Skidding to a halt on the rainbow road, the girl found herself without injury, but the whale was taking its toll on everyone else. While she blubbered to herself about illegal drugs and bad pizza reacting in the body with little sleep, something had to be done. One person was picking up their shoe and throwing it at the whale. Would that really stop anything? Really? Anandi didn't want to lose a shoe in case her feet needed protection later, so she instead unhooked her chunky rock bracelet and kissed it goodbye.

The Indian girl attempted some kind of battle cry, but it sounded more like a garbled wail and she threw the bracelet as hard as she could. As soon as the object left her hands, she ran and clung to the nearest person and sobbed like a baby.

As she heard that someone was attacked, Candice picked up a piece of the broken road and flung it hard toward the space whale. She didn't know if it would help at all, but at least, she was doing something.

Before she saw the piece land, she felt something wave over her. She dropped down to her knees in pain. Something was going on. But as fast as the feeling had arrived, it was gone again... And she was no longer in the battle.

Candice looked down at her hand and saw that she was holding her rapier in her right hand. It seemed normal to her... Another day at practice. She didn't know however, that in truth, she was holding something sharp: another piece of the shattered bridge...

It took a couple of hearty heaves and a lot of flexing, but in the end Prosper managed to get himself up out of that hole and back onto the road. Everywhere there was chaos. Everywhere there was no sound.

It felt strange, not being able to hear. Prosper didn't like it.

He ducked low when the whale swooped near, gritted his teeth, and promptly regretted his lack of a weapon. While Prosper was not truly predisposed to violence, the space whale's hostility inspired malevolent feelings. It would have been an ideal opportunity, when it loomed just overhead, to strike the creature's soft underbelly. He was in a disembowelling mood, and searched his person frantically for something with which to strike it.

At first, Prosper came up empty handed.

And then the beast waved that tail and, somehow, miraculously, his sandal was no longer a sandal.

"Aha!" Prosper declared victoriously, and plucked the sorry excuse for a shoe from his foot. A deranged giggle slipped from between his lips. "This must be a dream. Guys, guys-- LOOK, I've got a spear."

No, he really didn't.

Prosper took aim, and threw it anyways. Right at the whale's eye.

To his surprise, a purple-haired boy (Zue) came to Felix’s aid and successfully pulled Felicia out from the hole and onto somewhat stable ground. “Thanks,” he said, briefly glancing at the guardian before doing a quick double take. This guy had cat ears. What the hell. It seemed that he would never stop questioning his life right now. “I don’t understand my life anymore,” he lamented suddenly. Then Felix shook his head. “Forget it.” He turned toward Felicia. “Hey, can you hear me?”

It came to his realization that Callum and Layton had not helped him and he looked around to see what they were doing. “Callum, Layton---“ He stopped mid-sentence, blinking as he stared at them with a perplexed look. “Layton, when did you become a cupcake with white frosting, rainbow sprinkles, with cherry on to---Callum, are you stabbing Layton with a giant fork?” His face was now entirely blank as he mulled over his circumstance. He was hallucinating, wasn’t he? Silently, Felix turned around to face the space whale, which was now pink and colorful and sugary and cupcake-themed. He searched around in his pockets for something, anything—and he found his pencil, huh—and threw it at the creature.

Jett did not like accepting help. He nearly glared at Darwin and was half tempted to grab the male’s hand and toss him over his shoulder just to show how insulted he was. He couldn’t tell what the male was saying and hadn’t been paying attention enough to read his lips, but Jett had a very simple decision to make.

Accept the help, or fall.

Accept the help--and be in someone’s debt, or fall--and die.

It was a harder decision that it should have been. Jett knew he had the upper body strength to pull himself up, but what he didn’t have was the grip he needed. Reluctantly, he reached up a hand and took Darwin’s. He had enough time to plan his hand on the surface of the road and heave himself up without sacrificing Darwin into the hole he’d just been spared from.

It was begrudgingly that Jett accepted the help, but in the end, he was grateful. He had no gauge on the volume of his voice since he could hear nothing but the blood pumping in his ears, so when he spoke it was a little louder than he might have normally. “Thanks,” he said; there was a bitterness in his voice, but he was honest. “…I owe you one.”

And it was a debt he’d repay, should the chance ever occur; Jett wasn’t going to live the rest of his life being in Darwin’s death, but for now at least, he felt a sort of unwilling comradery. Darwin hadn’t had to help him, but he did. And Raven was safe, too, he noticed, glancing at the girl’s around her. He scooted a bit further away from the hole before he stood. Being deaf made it very difficult to tell what was going on, so he had to focus on people’s mouths moving to try and decipher what was going on—which was very difficult giving the chaos and the fact that his adrenaline was making him hypervigilant to compensate for the recent shock and loss of hearing.

The Space-Fade whale spirit had claimed its first victim. But, Anders wasn't someone who could sit back and watch as other people fell into peril. The whale had snatched up one of the spirits (he was guessing a spirit of purity), and he was just the sort of guy to try and save the girl. Never mind that he was up against a giant Space-Fade whale. Its immense size posed enough of a threat to everyone upon the broken rainbow road. Maybe if they banned together they could actually accomplish something --

His train of thought was cut off there as he was hit with a... hallucinogenic blast. Hawke was not able to save her companion from this, but it seemed to inspire a strange sort of confidence in Anders. "But I already blew this up! How is this happening? The chantry, Hawke!" He was suddenly seeing the whale as the chantry, the very institution he had destroyed in order to make the war between mages and templars. It had to happen, or mages would continue to suffer under the oppression of templars.

He couldn't let this chantry stand! He would bring it down, no matter if it pissed of Fenris and made Aveline burst a blood vessel in her forehead. "Cone of cold!" he shouted, grabbing a leather strap that was wrapped around his forearm and chucking it at the chantry. It was so big it had to hit!
