Did she just insinuate that he looked like a flat woman or a guy with boobs?

Before he even had time to ask, she gave a fresh welcome, grabbed his hand, and started half-dragging, half guiding him away from the pod he was using for support and out of the pod chamber.

Full hunter, and he still had pod duty. It was thankfully, usually highly boring and involved cleaning the pods for the drawn on faces people had made for the sleeping residents. Still, he was a bit annoyed. Marcus wanted to be on repair duty, he'd actually been getting better at electrical and light fixtures. If not repair he could be in the infirmary, learning how to be something like a nurse that wasn't really a nurse.

Pod duty, was not on his plans. Nor, was yet again, finding a p***s drawn on the 'face' of the pods. At the very least he mused he wasn't alone. "So, when do you think we'll be allowed to pick our duties for the week rather than having them handed to us?"

Alexei Jamil was not one to sleep in. He wasn't one to wake up obnoxiously early, either. He woke up around 7:00 AM daily, worked out, ate breakfast, and did his whole morning routine. He would then go to meet with one of his current flames at a quaint little store and cafe combo owned by a college friend, have a glass of wine, and go back home to read a book. Later that evening, he would put on a suit coat and head down to a local high-end club, and hopefully score.

He'd only ever slept in twice in his life. Once when he had the flu at the age of ten, and once when he had blacked out from the emotional exhaustion of his father leaving.

This would be the third time he slept past 7 AM.

Still in a foggy half sleep, Lex's eyes opened halfway to a harsh light. He put a hand up to block it, but found that his hand was blocked by something. He kept trying, and kept failing, producing a annoying THUMP, THUMP, THUMP.

Containment felt familiar, for some reason...

It had been quite a long time since Gale had actually had pod duty - and truth be told, he hadn't expected to even get it anymore, especially not with his promotion.

And yet here he was, sitting with Marcus, sitting in a chair with his feet propped up on an empty pod.

"Hopefully soon," muttered Gale, absently scratching doodles onto the paperwork in front of him. "This is extraordinarily dull."

Except no sooner than the words were out of his mouth than there was an unfamiliar thumping sound from one of the pods. Lowering his legs, Gale pushed himself upwards and glanced around.

"You hear that?"

"I don't get what we've done that would land us on pod duty. I mean, aside from our seniors shoving s**t onto us." The thump thump thump had Marcus actually caring about something other than 'Damn maturity levels of hunters when bored'. If someone woke up? Well that would be a change of pace. "Yep." Another thump. "Sounds like someone can't find a button." A small walk down the rows and. "Well, it's a dude." Hitting the release mechanism, he waited for the guy to step out on his own. Or fall out. Pods were fun like that.

---------

Meanwhile, further down, much closer to Gale, there was a Very loud thump followed by a "HELP! I DON'T WANT TO BE A PART OF THE SPACE PROGRAM".
Solia's training had ended fairly quickly, and waking up to being stuck in what looked to her to be some kind of transportation capsule, had her banging on the window. Space program she didn't know, but it was better than cursing up a storm or in general, screaming shrilly.

Lex half fell out, and half stepped out, because he liked to be that guy who took the unexpected option. He grunted, grabbing onto the first stable thing he could find: Marcus. Using the Moon's shoulder to draw himself up to his full height of 6'4", which was simple thanks to Marcus being above average on the height scale as well.

He opened his mouth, blinked, and looked around for a few moments. Hadn't he been in a room like this at some point? He remembered it vaguely, and with a gasmask to boot. Things were trickling back to him now, like a stream that had been blocked by a boulder, but had found a crack in the stone to get through.

"Is...this the real thing? Did I pass?"

Gale had quite a bit to say about certain seniors, but the fact that someone in the pods was actually waking up made him put aside what he was going to say in favor of actually doing his job properly. He glanced down at the roster in his hands, flipping through the pages until he found the pod number of the one Marcus was stepping towards.

"Make sure you get his name - " he started to say, but to his surprise there was a second thump, this one from a pod closer down the line. Leaving Marcus to the other one - which turned out to be a male (a very tall male, Gale noted, somewhat disgruntled), Gale stepped towards the second, hearing a shout come from it. With a small frown, he tucked the clipboard under one arm and reached up with the other, pulling the latch that unlocked the pod and letting the door swing open.

"Bloody hell, stop shrieking."

A step back to stead himself from the guy grabbing him to prevent a fall, Marcus blinked. "Oh great, he's tall like Dakota." Marcus was tall, but this was getting insane. He looked older at least. Gale was probably going to pout later at yet more tall dudes waking up. The short ones never got a break.
Stil, the new guy needed tending to so he didn't end up sick of something. "Sorry man uh, just talking about a guy we work with. So. Welcome back to the world of the living I guess." He gave the new trainee a pat on his back.
"If you woke up? Probably considered a pass. That or H is running out of people to torment but, that's for a different time. You feeling okay? First trip out of the pods is a bit weird. Like my friend said, Just give a name, and we'll set you up."

---

Solia's fist banged on the pod door about the same time it opened, earning a hiss as she was very much away at that ow, fist to metal was not ideal. Looking at her savior, (or was that slaver? Her head was fuzzy in a way that was not due to drugs or alcohol),. the girl graoned. "Yeah. Okay. Um." She just stood in the pod.

"Where am I exactly?" She lifted a leg to get out of the pod but her body said nope. Nope. Not unless she wanted to fall. "Can I just stay here for a bit while my head stops hurting?" She'd taken a test, and now what? Pass or fail. The pain told her she was alive, the pod told she was in some place not cool.

s**t it hurt to think.

Right - a name. He had a name, not just at number that he couldn't even remember at this point. "Alexei Jamil...or Lex, if you don't mind." HIs legs were shaking, not a good sign for the tower of a man. He grabbed a nearby pod to steady himself with, and took a few deep breaths. "Sorry if this is burdensome, but my muscles aren't quite conditioned yet." He appreciated the pat on the back, and stood up a little straighter.

"H...who's H? Did he set the whole kill everyone thing up?" He remembered that now, the killing. Brutal deaths and screaming; and he'd been in the centerfold. But it wasn't real, right? Just some sort of oddball dream while he slept in the pods?

"Nice to meet you, by the way, Mr...?" He offered a hand, and a shaky smile. "Who's your blond friend?"

There was a sharp clang. The girl - because that's who appeared in front of Gale as steam billowed from the inside of the pod - had apparently smacked her head against the side of it.

"Er," said Gale. "Are you all right?"

Marcus was busy talking to the new male trainee that had appeared, and Gale glanced over at them briefly before his eyes flickered back to the one in front of him. She was younger, perhaps a year or two older than he was, with light brown hair pulled back into a knot at the back of her head and dark brown eyes.

And she seemed to have no idea what was going on.

Gale lifted up a hand. "Here," he said. "Come down, it'll do you no good to just stay there."

After a moment he said, a bit sardonically, "My name is Gale Gentry. Welcome to Deus Ex Machina."

"Lex. Well, nice to meet you. I'm Marcus Hasan of the moon division, which will make sense once you get your debriefing." Were they supposed to do that? Maybe. He glanced over to Gale. Probably. "But don't worry. The first time out you're all over the place. You'll get used to it. As for H... yeah. Probably. And that guy-" he jerked a thumb over to the death hunter, "- Is Gale, death division. So Lex, you feeling alright or do you need a minute?"

------------------------

What was air? Was this real life or fantasy? Hard to tell, Solia looked at Gale, his hand, smiled, grabbed his hand and tried to step out, wobbling. She'd worn heels into the pod. Way to go Solia, aim to break your ankle right out of the starting gate. "Hi Gale. Um-" Brown eyes looked around, then at him. "....God I'm around tall people." She muttered. Even with heels, people were towering over her.

Even the guy who was helping her! And he looked younger to boot! Life wasn't fair. "Um-" images flashed in her head. People shooting others, people fighting things, a mask... "Um-" She said that a lot. "So. Gale."

She managed to steady herself. "What's a Deus ex Machina?"

"Divisions. No more of the Red vs. Blue stuff, then?" Divisions implied they were all in some kind of unit, united, but specializing in different things. Well, that's what it implied to him. May as well test the theory out. "So...Moon and Death; do you have differing roles or something?" He was able to stand completely straight now, only with slight wobbles in his legs.

"I'll be fine, thanks Marcus. The girl over there looks a bit worse off than me, really, but I think your friend Gale's got her covered." He looked the young lady over when he motioned with his head towards her, giving an appreciative nod inside his head and a little wave in the physical world. He waved to Gale too, out of politeness.

"About that debriefing?"

She was wearing heels, which wasn't exactly the smartest thing to do, but Gale said nothing as he helped her down, lifting the clipboard and scanning down for her pod number and name.

"Solia Delacroix," he read off, hearing a small clatter as her feet hit the ground. He glanced back up. "You're - "

Gale stopped abruptly. There was a key factor in this new person:

She was shorter than him. And not just by a half inch or so, like Eva was, but shorter, a good several inches shorter even with the heels. Gale blinked, momentarily stunned into silence - and over the fact that she had called him tall (which had never once happened in his entire life that he could recall).

"Er," he said, and then stopped, looked back down on the clipboard, and then back up at her.

"What's a Deus Ex Machina?"

Silence.

"Blimey," muttered Gale, and gave a sigh. "Deus Ex Machina is a specialized facility that deals with observation, information, and extermination, as well as reconnaissance and scientific factors. We focus on a very specific type of those things, but it's difficult to explain all in one go."

He gestured to the older hunter a few pods down. "That's Marcus Hassan, by the way. We're both Hunters. You and him - " he pointed to the other newbie. "You're both trainee hunters."

Oh they knew her name already! How fancy pantsy! Her legs were still a bit shaky as she scoot herself to a closed pod, leaning against it. She really didn't want to move. Plus, she kept hearing things. Gun fire. Screaming. A room, a test they had to take. A gun in her hands, she held it up-

No, she wasn't going to think on that. It had just been... a dream right? Right. Not real. She hadn't killed anyone. Nope. Not her. Nope. Nope. Just going to file that away. Think about it later. For now? Focus on standing and walking. "Um-" More ums, they must think her slow. "That sound fancy." Yeah she probably sounded really slow. "But okay. Hi Marcus!" She gave a small wave and the man simple gave a nod in greeting. The other guy got a wave. "Hi other trainee who I don't know." Turning to Gale she gave a sort of half smile. "So um..." A shrug. "What do we do now?"

------------------

Red vrs Blue? Ah, "No, the training was more... culling. In a way. Not like, killing killing but.. you'll understand when you get the talk. Maybe." Marcus just kind of gave a shrug. "Anyway, think of it like a placement program. Pass Fail. You passed, welcome to the team. Blah blah some feel good back pats for you." Sarcasm ran thick.

"But, the debriefing. This is Deus ex Machina, and if you missed what Gale said, we basically protect humanity from the things that go bump in the night. The stuff we can see that no one else can. We fight them and others to protect humanity. All good stuff. Just this last year we saved the world and prevent the apocalypse. I would explain but basically it sucked dicks. We have five divisions, each one with a specialized field. Mine is moon, which is defense. Sun is offense. Death is intel, Life is research, and mist is the jack of all trades master of none." He paused. "Most guys don't end up in mist. You follow so far?"

Okay, so he hadn't really killed anyone. That was good. What wasn't good? He had a slight headache, and this guy was laying his sarcasm on thick. Either he hated his job, or this was all old hat to him and it was time for Lex to leave.

"So, basically I'm one of the better ones from my placement test, above the learning curve." His voice was playful, not boasting and slightly confused still. He gave a shrug, and gave a few trial steps. His legs could take it, and he made his way towards Solia and Gale.

"So, you're telling me you're my superiors." He looked down to see Gale, and looked back to Marcus. "Okay...I guess I can handle that." He looked at Solia with twinkling eyes, and held out his hand. "Alexei Jamil, division unknown." He gave a wink to Marcus, acknowledging that he followed regarding the divisions.

"So, when do we get our monster killing equipment?"
