Maya -

You don't know me and you've probably never heard of me, but I know a lot about you. Your Aunt Shuga has been staying in our grasslands, teaching us how to befriend the animals here. She's done mighty fine taming lions that once ravaged our people and taming people that disrespected the lions. Thanks to your Aunt, we have come to live in the Tategami style. This is why I'm sad to give you this news. Your Aunt has been slain. It has been months since her death, but it has taken us a long time to track down a girl living on a hidden island. We are lucky to had paid attention to Shuga's drunken ramblings of the island and of you. Now... Your Aunt died very nobly. A group of thugs, who call themselves the Samurai Order, muscled in on our hunting grounds slaughtering for fun and games. Shuga was able to stand up to them several times. You know she be mighty powerful! But, reinforcements kept a coming and there was no way that she could stand up to them alone. We be holding a ceremony for her this coming spring. We'd hope you be able to make it, since she spoke about you so much. There was also something she left behind for you, the next Tategami Leader. You can find us in the River Country. I know I don't need to give ya any specifications since I'm sure you'll be able to track us down.

Hope to See You Soon
- Tategami Jascar

Karite took the letter from the man. Maya wasn't in any shape at all to be handling news of any kind. Opening the letter ignoring the situation unfolding near the dorms he began to scan through it. His eyes growing wider and his heart beat pounding throughout his entire body. He couldn't believe what he was reading. Shuga had been killed. She was a Shimagakure shinobi and a Tategami on top of that. No one should have been able to beat her. Not only that but Maya had now lost someone else in her life. Dropping to the ground the boy just stared at the letter thinking of how to tell Maya. She was going to have to find out, but hearing how everyone in her life has left her in her past he wasnt sure how she would take this. She had lost friends and family through her short time and now the leader of her clan had been killed by samurai. Something evil was lurking over the horizon and everyone in this village was about to be tested.

Maya still held her books, and almost reached out to smack Karite upside the head for taking the letter before she had the chance to. However, she chose to instead let him read it - there were only two of them, so what good would it do to fight over news, good or bad? She watched Karite's expression and sobered immediately to the fact that this was very bad news coming from the mainland. The fire on Shimagakure didn't hold a flame (pun intended) to the expressions that Karite was giving. She placed her books on the ground, and reached over, ruffling Karite's hair and touching the letter while whispering, "Karite...be strong."

As her eyes scanned the letter, slowly, she realized just how much she had to believe what she had said herself. Shuga... tears welled in Maya's eyes, but she did not let them fall. She cleared her throat, swallowing her pride and folding the letter neatly, with a care that she had shown very little things in her life. She tucked it into her shuriken pouch, against the very back, pinned between the supple leather and a piece of metal. She rubbed the back of her neck, the worn black leather of the choker she was wearing, had been wearing for many years, almost brittle beneath her touch. She might have to refashion it...Shuga would have helped. Shuga...

Maya cleared her throat again and took a deep breath. "We'll travel to the River Country, Karite. We'll pay respect to Aunt Shuga. And then..." Maya's voice broke for a second, but the fierce sentiment in her voice was clear when she spoke again. "And then we hunt the Samurai Order." Maya looked at Karite - there was no room for discussion in what she had said. She would study as much as she could before leaving, and she would try to learn healing. And if she didn't, she would hold a medical ninja at the end of her tekagi if anyone was hurt. And then she'd kill him...

Maya turned towards the frog that Baki had caught her. They would leave soon...but she had to train...she had to learn this technique, or at least get most of it learned! Maya knew she had to identify in the frog what she had learned from the first book, but she was having a little trouble focusing. She poked and prodded it, wondering how she was supposed to analyze it without even knowing what was inside of it. She muttered, "We leave at noon," before turning and concentrating on her work. She poked it again with her finger, scrunching her nose. Frogs? Of all animals, frogs?

Karite looked over at Maya as she studied. He too had something to do before they left for the mainland. He didnt know anything about these samurai but if his staff had anything to do with it they would feel pain. As soon as Kore was up they would go to the Tenmoki house and then get some food for Kore. The little guy had a rough day. "Maya, I want you to know." the boy took a pause as he stood up. "I am sorry. I should have apologized to you yesterday. I was upset because of Kore, I shouldn't have snapped like that." The boy heard the rustle of deer skin as he turned to see Kore behind him. Leaning down he took the lions head in his arm and hugged him. Kore was still alive. Which was meant his journey was far from over.

Kore woke and walked out from his tent still a little sore from Baki's punishment. Walking outside from his tent he saw one familiar face he was glad to know would always be there. Walking up behind Karite the lion growled a little. As Karite held his head the boy stood and began walking. Kore knew to follow. He would never leave Karite's side again.

Maya didn't understand how frogs would help her learn about the human body. It wasn't that she was freaked out by the thing - a lot of girls she knew would go running at the sight of a split end - it was just...puny. Maya leaned back against Baki, closing her eyes and wondering what it would be like to visit the other Tategami clan members. Shuga must have told them about her, but what had she told them? Maya cringed - she could only imagine Shuga telling others, in a drunken stupor, that she had a niece that never combed her hair, ran around in clothes until they were almost in tatters, and was never without a giant beast of a lion by her side. Great...

Maybe it wasn't all bad...Maya was a strong fighter and she trained hard too...and she did have her moments. The wild girl blinked. Well...maybe Yuki didn't want Maya to compare the frog body to a human body perfectly. That wouldn't make sense, since they were so different. Maya poked at the frog again. Well...two arms, two legs, a torso and a head. Perhaps they weren't....so....different after all... Maya cut the little amphibian with a kunai, unwilling to get her tekagi dirty. Red pulsated beneath her weapon, and she identified the big veins almost immediately. Hmm...

Veins, arteries, and capillaries - they were all there. Maya smiled slightly, and understood a little more why Yuki wanted this done on a frog. She wouldn't have to kill a larger animal to learn the same things. In fact, it was better to use frogs, since there were so many of them and they all laid hundreds of eggs every year. In Maya's mind, one frog was much less of a worry than, say, one of the Tategami lions. She shuddered - imagine if Yuki had been so evil to say that Maya had to find these and study these things on one of the lions. She'd never learn how to heal with chakra!

Maya studied the small frog. A heart, lungs, bones, muscle structures. She knew that the human body, on the inside, would look like this. All those pathways...so many places for chakra to go and to come from. Yuki would be proud that she managed to understand what she was being taught. Sadly, Maya thought, it was getting late in the morning already. The sun was up, and she still had several books to read of increasing difficulty. Maya shook her head sadly. She might actually have to resort to taking an enemy med nin hostage. A slow, feral grin crossed her face, and she shrugged. Oh well, she'd do what she had to. Maya poked at the frog a little more, studying and learning, trying to compare it to a human body. She'd killed enough people to know that certain veins, when cut, were irreparable, and others would heal with the slightest of pressure. She located these areas on the frog, and kept them tucked into her head for the future. Now...the stack of books. Maya groaned...

Now...Maya looked carefully at what she was going to do next. Ah...Yuki-sama wanted a diagram of the frog. Maya blinked. What in the...? But if Yuki knew what it looked like, why did she need another diagram? Baki, bored, rolled over and jumped on Maya's back, growling softly and gnawing on her shoulder. Maya rolled her shoulders and ignored the welts that appeared beneath Baki's teeth, and chuckled. "Baki, Baki," she murmured quietly, reaching and scratching his stomach, momentarily forgetting the diagram that she was supposed to be working on. Who could focus on a drawing when more important things were at hand, like a massive lion gnawing on one's shoulder?

[ Lol my luck is gone! ]

Maya continued to wrestle with Baki for a few seconds, totally forgetting the diagram she was supposed to be drawing. Meh, screw it! Maya growled playfully at Baki, who in return rumbled low and snapped at her forearm, grazing it lightly and barely drawing blood. He had gotten better at controlling his attacks, she noted mentally, and shoved him away from her body - only to pounce on him and then be flipped onto her back. Baki rolled onto his side then continued rolling until his body was on top of Maya's legs. Then he lifted his head and stuck his tongue out, and Maya chuckled. She pulled, but couldn't move her legs from beneath his body. So she reached for his stomach fuzz and tugged on the more sensitive hairs, eliciting an immediate withdrawal of the lion from atop her legs.

Shinichi's step was heavy and he jogged instead of sprinting at his usual speed towards Maya's place. Yuki had suggested he look for free genin and chuunin to help with the oxen. But, unless he was sorely mistaken, the only people who would qualify that weren't already working were Maya and Karite. After all, Sukotto had already gone to round up his team. Great, he got the animal lovers! A perfect job. Shinichi slowed as he stepped onto the grounds. The image of Maya and Baki grappling was familiar, but Karite and Kore weren't in sight. As he got closer, the man noticed books and a cut open frog. He couldn't help but chuckle at the same old Maya from the academy, never being one to just sit down and study. She turned out well enough, though. "Tategami-san," Shinichi called, walking up to the pair, but giving them enough breadth so he wouldn't get lion slobber all over his nice clothes. "Looks like you need a break from all that homework," he said with a small smile. Shinichi crouched and sat comfortably on his shins on a patch of grass. He knew he wasn't the girl's favorite and didn't want to appear menacing or antagonistic. "Did you hear that the housing district burned to the ground last night?" he asked, waiting for an answer before going on. "We're gathering ever able body to help rebuild the place. I would appreciate your help, especially for this task. We need one of the ox coaxed down to the Weapon's Shop to deliver building materials. I would do it alone, but I think the ox would be more useful when it's not in a fiery rage," the Kage explained, tilting his head as he anticipated an answer.

Maya turned her head towards Shinichi when she heard him refer to her as Tategami-san. What the hell was that about? Shinichi had never referred to her that way before. She listened quietly to his words, wondering which of the two oxen was in a bad mood today. Perhaps Kuu was just being stubborn.. or hm... well, either way, it would be a somewhat welcome break....well, somewhat. She did want to learn this jutsu before leaving later...

"I'll help but I have something that must be done at noon. I've told Karite he's to come with me, but I'll leave him here if he's not on time. I can help until then." Maya gave one last look at the frog, wondering if she had anything to add to her not even started diagram before she went to go help Shinichi with his ox problem. Hmm... nope. Not a clue. So she stood, dusted herself off, lay a large piece of leather over her work for future progress, and started walking towards the farm to deal with the unruly ox.

"Sounds good," Shinichi remarked, following the girl to the rice farms. He stooped to take a look at the frog, then at the empty piece of paper. It looked like Maya was supposed to be replicating the frog's body, no, the major arteries. Yuki's high court-styled handwriting was easy to recognize and read. He knew from his own experience that starting a studying task was always harder than finishing it, so he scribbled down the few artery names that he knew from training. Femoral artery. Aorta. Pulmonary. That should get her started. He fixed up the kanji lettering to make it legible and chased after Maya and Baki.

+5 to Maya's roll when she gets back
