Donovan peered at the elf that had just walked out, and could see what one would mean by being in one too many fights. Though he had to admit a guy like that would be a great bouncer. He put a finger against Lin, he looked at her firmly.
"Not a word," he told her.
She had less tack than him, and the last thing he needed was for her to comment on how he got any one of those scars.

Halmir headed over to join the small group, taking stock of them with a quick glance. He smiled at them, but it only served to stretch a scar on the corner of his mouth and eye and made him look even more disfigured.
"Would it be to much of a stretch of the imagination to guess that you, sir, are Donovan," he said formally in a rough and gravelly voice, "and that this little rose bud is your daughter, Lin?"

Donovan had to admit, Lin had been called many things before (little hellion not withstanding), but it was probably the first time he had ever heard her be called rose bud.
"Yes, I am," Donovan replied with a smile, "And this is Lin, I guess you've must have already heard about the us coming here then."
Lin tilted her head, she didn't know how to take that comment at all. Rose bud was kind of like a baby flower wasn't it? Did he just call her a baby flower? Was that even a good thing?

Halmir nodded, and his smile widened, though it only made him more hideous. "Aye, I had a chat with Ulrich before lunch," he agreed. "In all honesty, though, to spy the oak in the forest of cedars is far from a difficult task."
He chuckled a bit at Lin's reaction. "And you, little seedling, will you follow in your father's footsteps when you grow up?"

"Well... I suppose all of us in the group stick out," Donovan murmured trying to ignore the fact the man was talking in prose poetry.
Which made him grateful that he actually paid attention in English class growing up. Otherwise he would have a difficult time.
Lin blinked at him and said quite plainly, "You talk funny." Donovan resisted the urge to whack himself on the forehead, "Lin! You don't say that to people." "But then you don't call people plants."
Was he this bad as child? Seriously, Donovan could not remember if he was this bad as a child. If he was, he was seriously going to aplogize to his mother.

Halmir chuckled at Lin. "Funny I speak not," he replied good-naturedly, "'tis eloquence I speak with. A fair tongue is a skill forgotten by many today, I fear to say."
Finished teasing, he resumed his normal mode of speech. "And yet, child, you are correct: I did not call you a plant, nor your father; I merely used a comparison. Rather than taking up all sorts of time to say that you are young and small and might someday grow up to be strong and commanding as your father is, I used the idea of a sapling that grows into a mighty tree to show in a single word the entire idea of what I was attempting to convey. For example."
He grinned, his scars twisting again.
"If I were to compare you to a moor kit, I would do so to say that you are both young and small yet filled with a fierce strength and courage despite being quite attached to your parent figure. Would I not be correct to say so?"
Ulrich coughed softly to get Donovan's attention and tapped his temple again.

Donovan glanced at Ulrich, slowly understanding what the man meant, though for all he knew. The man could simply be humouring Lin a great deal, though he understood now too why Feng was so amused.
Lin didn't know how to be complimented like that, if it was Sir Valdemar then it was different, but this man, she didn't know. She hugged onto Donovan's head, which thought for a moment.
"What's a moor kit?"
Which seemed to be the safest thing to ask, while Donovan pried the girl off his head and held her instead.

"The offspring of a moor cat," Halmir replied easily. "Though if you don't know a kitten, you're doubtful to know the cat."
He paused, for once at a half-loss for words.
"I don't believe I know anything that you might be familiar with," he murmured, a thoughtful crease halving his brow. "Perhaps ..."
"They know cats," Ulrich interrupted the man. "Not moor cats, but cats. Though, as I recall, Donovan's seen a moor cat before ..."
Halmir looked at Donovan through half-lidded eyes. "Indeed," he said softly, though his voice was still rough and gravelly. "To come away from an encounter with a moor cat ... that takes more than strength, that takes luck that no one in this land has seen before."
Ulrich cleared his throat. "The moor cat was helping Donovan."
Halmir looked sharply at Donovan once more, and this time his eyes were wide with surprise. "Indeed?" he questioned. "Then there is much more to this man than meets the eye ... indeed, for one to work with a moor cat is far more rare ... however did you manage it?"

"Luck," Donovan replied since he was sure as hell not going to explain to the man that the moor cat was a shapeshifter, "and probably Ulrich had something to do that, when I visited before Aliya was born he had one. That one didn't like me as the last seeing as it whacked my leg with its tail," he coughed.
That's right, it was just another moor cat that Ulrich happened to be raising at the time.
"Does it talk? Like Wish?" Lin asked.

Ulrich chuckled a bit. "Aye, Leif was a bit tempermental," he agreed. "He was loyal, though, and did a wonderful job defending our home. We haven't had any attackers since he was around ... even though that was such a long time ago now."
Before Halmir could get too confused, he added, "No, moor cat's don't talk, unless you're Amdir."

"Oh... so not all cats can talk," she murmured.
It was a bit of a disappointment really, but she supposed it made sense, not all of the animals at home could talk, but she was most familiar with the cats. Wish always had something to say of course.
Donovan nodded at that before turning to Halmir, "Before Lin confuses you completely, I'd like to talk to you about the hunt that is being planned."

Halmir turned serious immediately, changing his expression and his stance to reflect it, and suddenly he looked every bit the soldier he had once been.
"Give me the details, sir," he nodded.

"I need someone to go with me to catch slavers," Donovan explain, "The last time I just went after the bandits, and it is far more difficult when you have to watch your back constantly."
He really did not rest all that well, and while he doubted he would rest soundly with one other person, he was sure it had to be a hell lot better than last time.
"It'll be probably another day or two before anyone can head out for it," he mused, "A lot has changed since the last time I was here, so if you don't mind Ulrich. Between you and Elrohir, with Halmir to consult the map and see where they are this time."
He paused to see if there was anything else he would like to add.
"Really, besides informing you that there will be a hunt and I do need someone to go with me, I always like to just simply talk to the person I'm going to be staying with for two weeks or more," he added as an after thought.
He was practical, he wasn't going to drag someone out on the last moment.

Halmir nodded and his arm rose a bit then lowered as if he had to stop himself from saluting.
"Aye, sir, I would be honoured to join you on a hunt," he said solemnly.
Ulrich cleared his throat a bit. "If you'd like, Donovan," he suggested softly, "I can ask Ulani where they might be. She has ... a method of finding anyone, anywhere, at any time ... I ask only that you stay here, then, tonight, and I can bring you their exact location tomorrow morning."

Old habits Donovan thought to himself as he watched Halmir before nodding to Ulrich's request, "That's fine, it would be a bit sudden to leave now anyhow," he replied back.
Then he could give last minute intructions to the others before leaving. Cindy he didn't need to worry about, but the twins and Lin he would.
"Good," he murmured, "Then it's settled, meet at the Ranch house in the morning when you arrive then?" he asked the two of them.
