It was the stranger in the carriage that told him, not all that unpleasantly, to grab unto the side. There was a place to stand there, and a rail for holding unto. Although he wouldn't be sitting down comfortably, he wouldn't have to try to keep up with the horses, either, and they could move faster.

Unless Arril resisted or complained, and unless Sih was spotted, their journey should bump along at a nice clip until they reached the first outpost designed for travelers such as themselves. They rolled past grazing livestock and small fighting practice groups that partially obscured the view of big buildings in the distance, buildings that marked the center of compounds on either side. The road seemed to mark the border between the compounds, and if so, they were coming up on a point where three compounds met. A small collection of businesses had cropped up there, forming a rambling outside marketplace that almost deserved to be called its own village. As they approached the outermost buildings, small shacks and leantos, they stopped to rest the horses and eat.

Arril was extremely releived when he was told to hang onto the outside of the carriage. Whatever happened on the inside was lost to him, and he could bold if he really felt like it. But he didn't.

The ride was not that long, and the cool wind was blowing in from the east, from the wilderness. It reminded him of so many times of his travels through the mountains and hills of these lands. "Press your leg against the carriage." Sih hissed.

Arril thought for a moment of what she meant, but remembered... His tail was bound against his leg. It was inside his trousers, but the base curved outside of the tear he had fashioned, tucking back in to wrap around his leg. He quickly heeded Sih's instructions, pinning the cloak between his leg and the carriage. He looked around to see if anyone had seen him; not seeing anyone, he looked at the approaching cluster of market buildings, amazed at the activity. He had never seen anything this busy in his life.

"The market." Sih whispered, her coils tightening protectively against Arril's chest.

Arril nodded, swallowing. the place didn't look friendly, not at all. "Do not let them get close. Protect my hood, and I'll protect us. As long as they think we are just a regular man, we can get away if need be. " Arril whispered as the carriage stopped.

Arril stepped off and adjusted his bow, slung across his shoulders. He flexed his fingers, watching the vile-looking men eyeing the eyes behind his hood...

The place they ate at was rather small, as was the market in Cheryl's eyes. She would likely never come here for provisions, unless out of dire necessity. There just wasn't much to chose from, and she held the small-time shopkeepers here in contempt, just like she did so many other things. This became clear as she spoke briefly to Arril. They sat at their own table, up against the side of the building itself, shielded from the road. She had talked to the carriage woman at length before they had gotten out to eat, and the way that they sat at a separate table gave the impression that they were again separate parties.

"You are lucky," Cheryl said quietly to him, "that people are so afraid to embarrass one another around here. Propriety should serve us awhile yet, if you keep as still and quiet as you have been." She smirked, adding, "one might almost think you grew up here." To her, he was a wild animal and a heathen. Yet she must appease him to some degree by giving him a reason to stay with her for this last leg of their journey;

"There is a man that you will be very interested in meeting. He deals with people like you." It would depend on the extent of Arril's curiosity, and his willingness to extend that into voiced questions, whether or not the rest of their journey would be smooth or difficult, for or against his benefit.

Sih stared at the woman. "I smell lies and deception. like a fox's scent. She is up to something, Arril." She hissed, none too silently, either; a woman to the left of them looked around for whatever made the noise.

"What do you mean, people like me?" He asked, narrowing his eyes.

He was getting a little angry. He did not come all the way out of the safe haven of the wilderness just to be threatened and treated like a servant. "Woman, I have never laid eyes on any of these places before. I've grown up in lands far east of here. Frankly, I'm confused at why I must act your servant and travel with you to some man who claims to know people like me. I doubt very seriously he knows anything about me or any other people like me."

He hissed in anger and in discomfort. his tail was beginning to cramp, and it was very unpleasant. "I want some answers, and I dont want to hear deceptive lies."

"If you are so upset, show yourself now and be done with it," she taunted with narrowed eyed. "You might even manage to kill me, but you will again be on the run in a society you know nothing about, by your own admission. They will hunt you down like a rabid dog and be done with you." She stared at him, offering no further information that might be useful to him.

Sih tensed to bite the woman, but Arril stayed her attack. Many a mocking bird had had been crushed by her bite because of their taunting and pestering. Sih reguarded the woman as such. "Stay your fangs... This woman only acts with words. She knows we have been in the wilds all our lives, she's just trying to coax instinct out of us for some reason." Arril hissed, making the woman to the left of them stand up in confusion. She was looking straight at them.

"I will not show myself, unless I feel I am safe. I want to know why you are taking me to this man, and why I only see women here, other than guards and laborers. what sort of society is this?" Arril said, glancing at the woman beside them, eyeing the both of them.

He felt sih shifting, moving to a loose position around his arm. She did this if she felt danger coming soon, so Arril could put her in a safe position or cast her at a stunned foe.

He brought his right arm close to his body, sheilding it from veiw, so he could rub Sih's head.

"I was never on the run, woman." He half spit at the woman, "I came here to find answers."

"It is clear that you do not appreciate my help," she said in a haughty sneer. "Have it your way." With that, she stood up and attempted to move away from the table. It was clear that she had no intention of giving him further information.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 01, 2007 1:53 pm

Arril made no move to follow her. She was out for no one but herself, like a weasel. He didn't care she no longer wanted to "help" him... If you could call it help. It seemed as if he was helping her. Toting her things, staying silent when he had so many questions. Like a servant. He felt Sih moving up to her normal position and cleared his throat when she was against his neck. "Let her go, Arril. We shouldn't be here, among these people. They wont understand you, think your a demon or spirit. Lets flee back to the wilderness." Sih hissed, silently.

"I will forget the woman, but I will not flee from the wilderness. There must be someone I could gain trust with here, someone who will not be so harsh, as the woman was. I need to find out what this society is... why it is so stranger than what I remember of my family..." Arril whispered to his familiar.

He got up and eyed the woman that was still staring at him, narrowing his eyes. "Do you have a staring problem?" He hissed, angry for being stared at.

The woman seemed shocked. she sat there, perplexed.

Arril shook his head. there was something wrong with her head and he did not want to mess around with something that was already afoul. He started walking up the road in the direction the carriage was going before it stopped. there must be a temple or place of knowlege further along the road... He did not look back to see if anyone was following or pursuing him.

A big man and a tall woman came out from the small kitchen. At their appearance, the patrons began moving away, towards their carriages or towards the road. The man stood somewhat in front of the woman, protecting her as she spoke.

"We will not have troublemakers on our property. Leave with your mistress, or we will find you the proper place for disobedient slaves," she threatened. "Your mistress' leniency is no excuse for your behavior. The authorities have already been called on her, and you look to suffer her fate."
PostPosted: Mon Nov 05, 2007 10:14 am

Arril spat. "I am slave to NO WOMAN, Especially that one." He yelled, pointing at the woman, Cheryll

Arril knew there was a a confrontation coming, so did Sih. After a brief rub against his neck, she quickly made her way down to his arm, where he may cast her at a foe, or get her quickly away from a conflict.

He studied the man, his stance, his threatening way of carrying himself. He would attack with his upper body, making it easy for Arril to slip his knife in the man's belly as the man braced his attack with his legs. The man was dead if he tried anything.

The woman was a different story. She carried herself with authority and certainty. She did not look like she could be much of a threat, but neither did a poison arrow frog... He reguarded her with caution.

Arril kept his right arm close, and his left arm ready. He wouldn't cast sih at anything unless he absolutely had to. "I will suffer no fate but my own." He said, loosening his bound tail. If he had to fight, he would fight in perfect balance.

With a few violent wriglings of his tail, the bindings fell off onto the ground behind him. Releif!

He did not move his tail much, thought he wanted to. he didn't want to alert them to what he was if they did not attack. it would be hidden under his cloak as long as he didn't move it much.

Cheryl was practically already out of there, so that Arril spoke to her retreating back. She wasn't one to hang around for a mess like this.

The tall woman didn't even glance to where Arril pointed. Her concern was Arril himself, and nothing else. Clearly the man was insane, as sometimes happens even to the best of pets, and probably abandoned on the road to find trouble where he may. Poor women sometimes did that if they could not afford to pay for the consequences of an out-of-control slave.

Although the big man seemed to be the one readying to fight, it was actually not him at all that Arril needed to worry about. He was there just in case, in case Arril jumped at his mistress unexpectedly. With such an obvious fight like this brewing, she could take care of herself, and she wouldn't be standing for the upstart's nonsense. Yet the big man did not smile nor give any indication as to what was coming up. He didn't like it when this sort of thing happened, but neither could he predict exactly what his confident mistress would do, nor when she would do it.

She could take care of herself, you see, because she was one of the women with the Feretris magic. Although outwardly she appeared to do no more than stare at Arril, in the realm of the invisible she immediately inflicted great pain in him. The pain concentrated at his knees and in his chest, as if some vile creature was eating its way out in each place. As his brain began attempted to compensate with a rush of adrenaline and other hormones, she lay her second blow, at the base of his skull. This had proved most effective for rendering dangerous slaves on their knees, or even unconscious, due to the fact that it was the place in the brain that controlled many necessary but involuntary functions, such as breathing. A slave could die if hit there without care, but it was worth the risk for one who appeared to be so violent.

Although the pain radiated moderately throughout his body, his tail remained strangely untouched, if Arril had the ability to notice, simply because the woman did not know it was there. Similarly, the snake was also unharmed, as she was not the object of the attack.
PostPosted: Fri Nov 09, 2007 12:57 pm

What was this pain? Why was it afflicting him now, out of all times? His knees trembled as he tried to fight the pain out of his system. "Sih.." He hissed.

The snake was back in her normal spot now, sensing that he was in great pain. She could feel the muscles in his chest trembling violently like his knees. She hadn't seen him in this much pain since he had broken a few ribs years ago. "Arril, What ails you?" She said silently, her tongue flickering in his ear.

Arril could barely comprehend what she was saying from the pain. it was so excruciatingly painful, he could barely stand it. "The pain... I dont understand... It's like the spirits the wolves speak of, eating away at my bones and innards..." he gasped, falling to his knees.

His hand went to his throat where he could cup Sih's head, rubbing it with his fingers. "Sih, dont let them hurt you... Get away from them if they threaten you." He said, coughing.

Every breath, every spasm of coughing felt like death and fire. he went limp and colapsed, still concious, but unable to pick himself up. "I wont let them touch you, Arril." Sih hissed, constricting herself gently around him,

"No. Dont fight. They have a spirit. The spirit will harm you, if you appear threatening. Get away if..." He said, interrupted.

The magic cast on his head had finally breached the little protection his scales had provided. Had the woman had not cast the pain towards his chest and knees, he would have been wizened to the attack and threw his knife at the woman. He colpased to the ground, watching sih in front of him. Soon it would be over. He clutched sih's neck against his own weakly, trying to keep her from being attacked. He knew not what they would do. He coughed violently and flayed his other hand at the man and woman, "Call your spirits off... We will come peacfully." He choked, knowing they would inevitably find out about his 'state' when they uncloaked him.

best to come willingly.

(bwahahaha!)

The pain was partially withdrawn a moment or two after his request. A faint pang remained in his knees, as a reminder and a warning. "Don't get up," the woman added. She couldn't be much clearer than that.

"Rigal, retrieve the serpent. Such a pet should not be let loose." Some time during Arril's collapse, they had caught a glimpse of scales. Perhaps it had been Sih, or perhaps Arril's own twitching tail gone unminded by its master in the uproar.

Unfortunately for Arril, Feretris women were not in the habit of explaining their plans to slaves, especially rebellious ones. In contrast to Cheryl, though, this woman did not seem all that excitable, and acted as though things like this had happened to her before. She began giving orders to other slaves who had come out to stand in the doorway to the building; go fetch the carriage, prepare restraints, and find a large container for the pet.

Meanwhile Rigal approached with a plodding step, and leaned down slowly over Arril. The last thing that he wanted was to upset a slave who might be insane, or to spook a snake. "C'mere," he coaxed Sih, as if he were talking to a dog. "Sure we got some nice rats for ya back at the compound."

Arril did as he was told, hanging onto Sih dearly for a few moments before they had to part. "Dot not let them hurt you... Remember the ruins and how to get there? when you escape, go there and find Kira the wolf, if I am not there before the winter. She knows you, me. her pack will keep you warm if... I'm not able to." He hissed softly to her

They both looked up at the man who had come to part them. Sih's unemotional--unblinking stare of a serpent and Arril's glare of pain and confusion would be alien to anyone approaching them. They stared at the man for a second that lasted for eternity before Arril looked away. "You are a person, Sih. Not an animal. Get away when the opportunity becomes available."

He felt Sih giving his chest a squeeze before she started sliding off him. "Arril, I will miss you... I will see you again."

Arril watched her hesitantly approach the man, trying to look as submissive as she could. "Do not bring her harm..." Arril said to the man, his glare becoming a more pleading expression.

He watched Sih as much as he could, before he couldn't see her any more.

He looked up at the woman, the surrounding men, the restraints... "Those are not necessary." and they weren't. He would be able to shred any rope or leather with his claws. "If you have crippled me with spirits, how will I run or gain balance without legs to stand on?" He said, His voice wavering through pain and emotion, further garbled with his hissing accent.

He feared what they would do when they discovered his differences. He wanted to keep his identity as long as he could. "My cloak keeps my afflictions away from other people, it's enchanted. May I keep it on as long as we are among a village?"

His mind was still grappling with the absence of Sih. this would be a long, hard process.
