My thread is a battleground.............
crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying crying
"It's candy. It's not supposed to make sense."
And no one can beat Gene Wilder at that interpratation of Willy Wonka. So I'm glad Depp didn't try. He took the character and made it his own.

Okay I hear all sides of this and I say that the old Gene Wilder version I loved and I also loved the new one The music makes sence if you know the writers way. well Danny elfmans way and sry to say the oompaloompas were much better in the new and It was improvisation on thier part in the new so it shouldn't have made sense
so my humble opinon is that do with it as you may and try not to tick anyone off again please *Eyes flare red and fades into a shadow, and waits*

just a quick question... has anyone who didn't like the new version read the book? it's more like the book than the one that was pretty much a huge drug trip like thing. i'm not dissing the old one, i love that too, but the new one is definitely more like dahl's style i think, and it's tim burton's version of it, you should have known that, and his stuff is always like that ^_^ c'mon, he did edward scissorhands, nightmare before christmas, sleepy hollow, and many more. plus, i can't wait for the corpse bride!!! ^_^

Roald Dahl, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are all demented, so expected something really crazy. and I love crazyness. heart whee

Roald Dahl, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are all demented, so expected something really crazy. and I love crazyness. heart whee If you have ever read any of Roald Dahl's books, they are all twisted. As one of his teachers once said (I read this in a biography): "I have never had a student who writes so much that he does not mean." The entire fact that his writing is twisted gives Tim Burton enough grounds to bring the book to life because he, too, is twisted. He does not just direct movies---he writes too. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas was based off a poem that Tim wrote. On the special edition version of the same movie is a short five-minute piece called "Vincent." It is another poem written by Tim Burton, brought to life by stop-motion animation. Further examples of Tim's written work can be found in The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. It is a book of poems again written by Tim Burton. Where am I going with this, you ask? Once you have read the works of both authors, Ganseki Senpai, it gives you an entirely new understanding of how well Tim Burton brought together Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Furthermore, we look at each author's strengths: Roald Dahl usually likes to focus on a character, normally a child, who has a bad, possibly even terrible life which gets better by some stroke of luck that leads on an imaginative adventure. Tim Burton's main focus is on a misunderstood outcast. Charlie and the Chocolate Facotry fit both author's needs in Charlie and, most especially, Willy Wonka. I must be honest, I have not read the book, but I have read enough of Dahl's work to know that Charlie fits his general theme of a child with a not-so-great life suddenly going on an unbelievable adventure. Thus, here is Dahl's main theme. Wonka is the misunderstood outcast. He has obviously spent too much time alone (I sense a touch of Edward Scissorhands here along with some of the machinery...), he does not fit in, he is judged by others. This is generally where Burton comes into play. What his audience (in the movie) sees is a quirky man with the strangest chocolate factory ever built. Inside, he has had a terrible childhood, forced into ridicule, unable to enjoy a piece of candy like other children his age. Angered with his father, he ran away, but when his plan to see the world failed and he came home, his father was gone, obviously having turned his back on him. This plays further into the "outcast" role. Combining the two was a work of genius, seeing as both author's specialties come out into play. And as mentioned before, Burton and Dahl are twisted. It only makes sense that two twisted minds form to become one. There is a very good balance between Dahl's story and Burton's visuals. One more thing---I read the "original" Loompa lyrics somewhere in this thread. The lyrics in the new movie are straight from Dahl's book (I know this because I am one of the rare people who takes time to read the credits, and under each Loompa song, it said, "Lyrics written by Roald Dahl.") Personally, I liked Dahl's lyrics better. Combined with Danny Elfman's music and vocals, they were only more enjoyable to watch. I recall watching the old version when I was younger, and I hated the Loompa songs. The new versions I would gladly sing along to.
