"Sure kid, whatever you want," Cassie told him. "Yep, Cassie here showed me how to use makeup so my skin looks sunny and I look older. That's good sometimes," Manny said. Cassie was now rinsing the shampoo out of Manny's hair, tuning the two's conversation out with the aid of her iPod earbuds. She liked these kids, even if they were a bit young and hyper. "Almost done," she told Manny reaching for a towel to wrap her hair with. Hers would take a bit longer than Harper's to dry.

"What does it mean, look sunny? You get really bright and make people sweat? I don't like the sun so much, I like it better when it's cold, and I haven't seen rain yet but they say water comes from where the sun was and gets everyone wet. It sound's awesome!" Awesome, an impressive word for one his age. He was clearly coached.
"What kind of makeup you put on me? I have blue on my eyes.. It doesn't go away, Uncle Sunny says he thinks I'm part of a bird. Or a bird is part of me, or in me? But we are 'vegeetarreanz' so I never ate a chicken, and I'm not scared of anything, so that doesn't seem right... Are you part of a bird or something? Most people don't have tails, like you! I wish I had a tail, like yours, and then I wouldn't have to dye my hair, like yours!"

"No, it means more like, a kind of happy glowie look. It's a good thing," she explained as Cassie wrapped her hair up in a towel. The older girl let her sit up and she did so, smiling as Cassie moved to fill Harper's sink. "Your turn," she remarked, shifting in her seat, "I don't really know what kind of makeup, maybe some eyeliner to make your eyes stand out, might have to cover up some of that blue though." So she'd been sort of right the first time, he just might be a kind of bird like Riley, but different. "I don't think I'm a bird. Mamma says I'm part of her and someone else, or at least that's what the people told her. She thinks I'm a gift, for something she did good," she told him, trying not to say too much about who the gift was from.

"A happy glow? You already look happy.... why do you need to glow?" Harper shook his head. "You're silly." He told her matter of factly. Oh, now, this was odd. The sink was filling, he was getting wet, some lady was hovering above him and he coulden't help but giggle. "Makes my eyes stand out? .. My eyes aren't any color at all!" He proclaimed, sounding somewhat unhappy with it. "If you aren't a bird, what are you? What do you mean part of her?" He frowned again. He had noted Manny and her mother looked somewhat alike, but Soloman and he had totally opposite skin tones, and Soloman's eyes were bright and colored. His mother and uncle had darker skin than him too, and they had brighter eyes, though Eliot's skin was much like his and had dark eyes like Harper.
"Eww, I hope I'm not part of Eliot... do you think the other part of you is an animal? Only animals have tails, except special humans like you and stuff."

"I don't really know, Mama Estelle told me about a deamon once, with a tail like mine. The people at the library center didn't tell her anything really, but she's thinking that that might have some influence over me," she explained, not really sure how to word things like being part of her mother. Cassie cautiously picked up the spraying to soak down Harper's hair, trying not to startle the boy.

"Whats a deamon? It sounds like a make-believe story, you think your momma will tell me stories like that too? I like stories but mommy's stories are stupid. Except the ones about playing music in front of other people! But she has other stupid stories about living on another 'plane' and stuffs, but you can't live on a plain!" Harper said. He slowly realised the rushing water sensation over the top of his head and briefly panicked, thinking he had to go to the bathroom! But all is well, the feeling passed, so Harper sighed contentedly and smiled up at Cassie in a cutesy way.

"I think it's like a demon," Manny suggested, "But good, not evil. Mama Estelle has a lot of stories, I'm sure she'd be glad to tell you one if you asked. She's a santera, kind of like a preacher, so she spends a lot of time telling people stories and helping them get through rough times." Cassie turned the sprayer off as soon as she could, then started to lather his hair with a strong smelling cucumber melon shampoo.

"But I don't know what a demon is either.. well, your Mother sounds nice! Does your mommy have a boyfriend?" Harper asked, having no real clue what a boyfriend was. Eliot was always asking girls that, and he got the impression it was just a guy that hung around a girl alot. Or something. "Why does she help people? Just to be nice? My mommy needs a lot of help! That's smelly, Cassie.. Now I'm hungry, I want fruit, I think.." Harper pursed his lips a bit. How strange.

Cassie laughed a bit, "You know I actually hear that alot, but it's really good for your hair and your skin." Manny kicked her feet back and forth, "Mama Estelle just likes helping, she says it's because someone helped her a lot when she was younger. I don't think she has a boyfriend, at least she's never mentioned having one." Wasn't he too young to be asking that anyway?

"Why do you call her 'Mama Estelle,' not just mommy?" Harper asked curiously. "That's good, Eliot always gets happy when they say they don't have boyfriends.. your mommy must be lucky, yes? Someone helped her the way she helps people? I want to go meet her!" Harper decided. All this talking about her and no talking with her!
He looked back at Cassie and blinked a few times. "Ooookay." He said.

"As soon as Cassie's done washing your hair," she promised, knowing that the girl would have to mix the dyes before they could continue. Cassie shot a smile to her, then started to rinse the shampoo out. It was easier with Harper's hair, since it was shorter and not as thick. "I call her Mama Estelle because that's what most people call her," she told him, not really sure why the other people called her that now that she thought of it.

"Why do most people call her that?" That question came quick. The quick ones were generally the ones most people would ask even if they weren't cursed with a perpetual mindset of 2000 questions or more. "Why do you mix the dyes?" Harper continued to ask, looking back at Cassie. "Do you ever dye your hair, Manny? Is that why your hair is different colours in front, you dye it?" Harper took a deep breath and fidgeted some, his patience beginning to wear thin. He wasn't used to having to sit this still for too long...

Manny shrugged, "They just have, ever since I can remember." Her hair, that was kind of a touchy subject, some kids had made fun of her before, because they thought it looked silly. "No, it just grows in like that, same as my tail, I don't know," she admitted. Cassie wrapped his head up quick in a small white towel, smiling as she went off to the back to get the dye.

"It grows different for no reason? You are even more special, then!" Harper clapped his hands for her. He tried to lift his head up a moment later only have his head fall back a moment later. "My head got really big!" He exclaimed, sounding alarmed.
Harper sighed when Cassie left, albeit momentarily. He thought he'd be stuck that way for a little while, she he decided to fling another set of questions at her. "What's your favorite toy? Do you like video games? I can't play games yet, they say my hands too little and I don't know how to press buttons right..."

"Don't worry, it's just the towel, it's to keep your shirt dry," she told him, finding it a bit silly that he thought his head had expanded. People couldn't just expand, not for no reason at least. "I don't play a lot of games really, but I like books, and clothes." Hmm, that seemed kind of dull. Well, maybe he had some suggestions.
