"Put your weight behind it, keep your thumb on the outside, and hit what you're aiming for," Shade instructed Antony. "For a karate punch you punch with one arm, pull back with the other, like a pully system. It adds a bit of oomph."
Antony gritted his teeth, fighting the urge to beg him to show again so he could show off his natural copy cat talent, but Shade wouldn't do it until he felt like it, and Antony would look like a baby because he was begging.
His pride wouldn't allow that. He threw a punch.
"Your left arm isnt' pulling back fast enough," Shade said.

"Give me a couple more kicks and we'll move on," Victor told her, ignoring her look dissatisfaction at being told to repeat what they had been doing for a while. Luckily she was very good at venting her frustrations into constructive energy. The next couple of kicks were right on the mark, for the most part, and the last one left Victor with a small whince of pain. He leaned back, taking off the mitt and rubbing his hand. "Alright...I think you can try punches now."
Riley grinned in triumph and quickly balled her hands into fists, ready to try out these punches Shade had been talking about.

"Keep your shoulder angled," Shade said. "The less of a target they have, the better." If Riley stuck around for these lessons, he thought silently, Antony would have a sparring partner.
"Now, for some general knowledge," Shade said as Antony kept trying. "A human body can take a lot more force downward than it can going up. You want to hurt someone, you punch upwards. And aim for vital spots. Between the legs, below the ribcage, the throat and the nose."
This was his idea of self defense.

And boy was she going to stick like glue. Riley began to try her punches, which brought on a shower of corrections on Victor's part. Turn your fist the other way, lift your arm more like so, don't turn your neck like that, etc. It was surprising that this happened, since there really hadn't been a proper demonstration. But it wasn't bad as far as working from scratch went.
As the conversation went a bit to tactics Vic decided to offer up his 2 cents. "It's also good to keep in mind the way certain body parts move...for example, if you kick someone's knee backwards or to the side it will be extremely painful...since it's not supposed to move in those directions naturally," he said while adjusting Riley's stance again.

"You get a little older," Shade promised, "And I'll teach you weapons."
"Yes, Father," Antony said, where he would have argued that weapons were unnecessary. This was different, he thought as he glanced at Riley out of the corner of his eye, this was a competition. He wasn't about to lose.

Riley's eyes widened a little and she paused in her rounds just at the idea. Weapons! She grinned from ear to ear, feeling a swell of energy fill her body. Her punches resumed form, this time looking a bit better and more precise. That little phraise alone had been enough to motivate her for a long time to come.
Victor, of course, was a little uncertain about how wise this had been. Now that there was the promise of weapons in the air he knew he couldn't deny that to her. But he had hoped, like the rest of his siblings, to keep Riley out of the military life style. He rubbed the back of his head for a moment, before going back to correcting her. He supposed they'd just have to wait and see.
