Keys. And clocks.
I've always had a fascination with them. And then I saw the grand, beautifully victorian style of Datamancer while I was browsing DIY stuff...twas love, good sirs and madams, love.

I think it was initially Back to the Future that did me in, although I have ALWAAAYS loved the Victorian style, mostly because I was into exploring alternative subcultures like punk and goth and victorian clothing was part of the goth culture. BttF appealed to me because I LOOOOOVE clocks and eccentricity. Doc Brown mentioned his love of Jules Verne, so I read Jules Verne.... From there it took off and I discovered that my love for Verne, sci-fi, my love for clocks and gears, AND Victorian fashion was ACTUALLY part of the Steampunk subculture!!! From Wikipedia I learned of Abney Park, which led to other things..... And VOILA! Here I am.
Anybody here know the "band," Vernian Process? I helped Josh name the song "Final Confrontation" because I HAD to be a nerd on Myspace. I'm proud of myself. lol

The future-wheels were certainly a very nice touch for a time-travelling train. sweatdrop (I've actually had a geeky fondness for keys and clocks too... at one point my parents wanted to buy this big pricey old fixer-upper house and we found some old keys at a flea market, which I loved... I think I have one in a box someplace... and is it weird that one of the parts of Pinocchio that stood out most was the many many clocks Gepetto had? sweatdrop )

My earliest connection with steampunk was probably BTTF3 and the Myst games.
And now with all the awesome home-made gadgets and stuff, it's impossible not to like it xd

Books. Namely the stuff Philip Reeve wrote (Mortal Engines, Larklight) but also Keneth Oppel's Airborn and Skybreaker.
Also, like the look of gears and the like. Very spiffish. X3

over the years i slowly accumulated information and inner models of what victorian ages and the beginning of industry were like and how they should've been. i found that many games, books, pictures and such had certain aesthetic values that i found to my liking. then not all that long ago i came across a term "steampunk" and found out that it applied to me 100%.

Wow, I've been SteamPunk my whole life and just recently found out what Steampunk was. I've been in love with gears, mechanics, and Victorian Era things in general. I played Arcanum years ago and fell in love with the game, EVEN THOUGH I LOST THE DAMN DISCS!!! (breathe Anthony breathe) and I have read some comics with alot of steampunk influences and just love em. Ok, cheerio chaps!

well for me I never knew about the sub culture until recently, I accidently stumpled upon a website about it, and since it fit with my interests.

Kind of an interesting story, actually. My father is big into electronics, and one day he came to me very excited with pictures of the Steampunk Workshop's (now famous) Steampunk computer. He began to explain all about how he had just discovered this subculture and all about what it stood for. I was very interested and we both delved into it. It's been very fun to discover Steampunk at my father's side.
I think it's admirable that Steampunk has such a large appeal that even spans generations.

Try local thrift stores, they often have pocket watches [probably not working, but possibly fixable] for less than $10. I'm just sad the two I was eyeing at my local Goodwill got snatched up before the holiday season was over.

I think it's admirable that Steampunk has such a large appeal that even spans generations. You're so lucky. My dad loves ancient and antique endeavors, especially Civil War-era stuff (and often collects things), and loves media-type things like Firefly, Blade Runner, westerns, and science fiction, and he is big into computers and "science fiction" like advents in science, like the progress their making with robotics, etc. I couldn't understand why he didn't jump onto the SteamPunk hoodlebug headfirt when I introduced him to it. Nothing more than a "hmmm". But he's an older guy and he's not exactly going to be jumping for joy at the thought of getting shiny goggles and a browncoat. *sigh* It'd be so cool to share that stuff though!

Hmm I can't really say. I always liked pocketwatches and I do believe that is what may have got me started. The inner gears were fascinating. From there I discovered designs of steampunk trains and certain things like that, and my interest grew. The book The Time Machine was quite nice to me as well, and just the idea that one could come up with the designs and ideas that steampunk writers and artists do drew me to it. The thought of Victorian era peoples flying above with dirigibles is amazing! (Especially when it involves cannons and wars heh)
