Bashful Friend

"If you didn't have our friendship, Mitsuko-chan, there are few other reasons we would be here," Roka murmured softly, more to himself than to the girl. He wondered how she could possibly doubt their relationship with her as friends. Still...there was always the reason of business, he supposed.

He blinked as she described the fruit tarts she had made. They sounded wonderful; especially now tired as he was. It surprised him to know Mitsuko had made them, though. "Do you enjoy cooking too, Mitsuko-chan?" he asked politely. "I'm not sure Roka-kun ever mentioned that."

"Unfortunately, younger siblings rarely behave," he added with a sheepish smile at the birthday girl's comment. "Least of all in the company of those they feel most comfortable with." Takumi's comment almost made him laugh aloud. The guy made it seem like a joke; being a big brother. A tedious job? Roka began to question whether he knew the half of it. After all, he only had one younger sister to deal with. At least he could be sure she didn't dress her older brother up in dresses before sending them off to parties.

"Yes we should! That would be a wonderful idea, Takumi-kun. I don't know about Niji-chan & Seshi-chan, but Ena sounds perfectly sweet." He would have gladly traded Takumi sisters any day.

Roka's face reddened visibly in shame as he noticed Mitsuko's gaze drop to the floor. Why had he gone and been stupid enough to mention her grandmother? She must have been feeling bad already. Perhaps she had been trying to forget before he brought it up. But as she looked up again and flashed him another smile, he knew she wouldn't hold it against him.

"I'll be sure to tell him, Mitsuko-chan. But it's good to talk with others and be open. I think that's one thing he very much admires about you, as he seems to have trouble with it himself."

"Ask anyone here - I'm sure they'll all tell you just how very kind you are. We've only just met and I can already tell you're a very good person." He winked reassuringly. "A pretty white kitty? Oh, the poor thing...I've always liked cats myself, but of course we can't have one. Did it ever find its owner? I hope it didn't get lost..." Come to think of it, Roka never really did find out what had ever become of the kitten. He had been too busy trying to find his way out of the crowd. Mitsuko's question caught his attention. "Roka-kun? Oh, yes, he's been perfectly fine. See what I mean? You're so considerate."

Roka blinked. He hadn't realized Minori took lessons. "That's amazing, Minori-chan. Your talent certainly shows." Yet another surprising new thing he had learned about her that evening. An only child and a dancer. Though that still didn't solve the mystery of why she was acting so upset. He didn't want to push her to tell him, but as he noticed her blushing, he found it difficult to ignore. Now she was making him uncomrfortable. Was she upset because he kept referring to her as 'chan' instead of 'san'?

"If you say so...but, um...Minori-san, if I'm bothering you in the least, please let me know. With the way you seem to act every time Roka-kun is mentioned, I'd think he'd done something to upset you." He was whispering, but it was still best to stay in character, just in case they were overhead.

"Now if it's Takumi-san who's making you blush, I can understand...you're not the only one who tends to notice things," he added with a small smile. There were very subtle actions, but Roka had noticed since he'd arrived that Minori had been acting very strangely toward their male classmate. He knew enough about girls to figure it out for what it was, too.

Before he could stop the birthday girl, Roka's enthusiastic classmate had gone to get an icepack. When she came back, she juggled the thing precariously, and he reached out to relieve her of her burden, surpressing a few giggles. "Thank you very much, Mitsuko-chan!" He gingerly pressed it against his ankle, deftly aware of his skirt being shorter than he'd have liked it to be.

Laughing merrily at Mitsuko's plan, Roka tried to act socially natural so as not to seem out of place in front of Satu. "But then even more people will bring you gifts!" he remarked, shaking his head. "Takumi-kun's right. Um...hello, Satu-kun!" The silver-haired 'girl' turned her head slightly to give a weak smile and wave at the newcomer awkwardly.

So far, so good. Satu didn't seem to notice him. However, the 1B student did seem very terrified. Roka suddenly began to wonder if he wasn't the only one attending the party with the influence of others. Satu didn't look as if he much wanted to be there. Furthermore, the Kimura was wearing something Roka doubted Satu would have ever picked out for himself. The garments were quite flashy, and their boldness seemed out of place when worn by the uneasy young man.

Well...thought Roka, at least I'm not the only one who was bullied by their sisters. He felt terrible for not being able to greet Satu properly as a familiar face, but he absolutly refused to let the musician get a good look at him; at least until Mitsuko introduced them and confirmed Roka's disguise. Once he was identified as Asumi, he could go over and perhaps ease the guy's fears a bit. A party comprised of all class 1A students would probably have been pretty intimidating to anyone of another class.

As she recieved assurances from her friends, and felt Minori's arm move around her, the girl grinned. "Thanks, you guys." For a moment, she was silent, before another bright grin found it's way on her face. "I really do appreciate it." Then, at Minori's words, the girl looked shocked, "Waaah! Of course I wouldn't want you guys to feel guilty!" She exclaimed, taking the other girl's words seriously, and looking rather flustered.

"True," Mitsuko replied, to the other girl's comment about her cooking ability, "But since I tend to be a klutz when it comes to walking, I assumed you guys would think I'd be a klutz in the kitchen, which is understandable, really." Offering a smile and nod to Minori and Takumi, she looked over to Roka curiously for a moment, before giving a thoughtful blink. "Yupyup, I suppose so. I like cooking, sewing, and all that. I don't get a chance to do much of it, since my father is convinced it's maids work," She paused, a defensive frown on her face, "But I rather like it so..." Mitsuko trailed off, with a small nod. Really, when her father said 'maids' work, she knew he really meant commoners.

Laughing as Roka spoke, the girl resumed her usual cheery manner. "Oh, I'm sure they're wonderful siblings. Never gets lonely for one thing, yes?" Then, she giggled again at Takumi's comment. "If you were the younger sibling though, wouldn't you consider it your sister's duty to listen to your troubles?" She teased, raising both eyebrows.

Looking surprised, the girl blinked at Roka. "Admires me for being open?" She blinked, before grinning, giving a little shake of her head. "Tell him that though he may admire me for that, he's good the way he is, and if he tries to change himself through force, 'Tsuko will whack him on the head." She said, seeming both serious and teasing at the same time.

"You didn't see the kitty, Takumi-kun?" Mitsuko asked, surprised. "I think it had been rubbing up against your leg, if I remember correctly." She tapped at her head with a finger, as if it'd help her think. "And no, I only saw it out in the hallways, not the class." Then, she smiled at 'Asumi'. "That's good to hear, and it'd be rather rude of me not to care about the well-being of my friends, yes?"

"Then," The birthday girl said, in response to Takumi, "I'll make my 'birthday party' in January, but not refer to it as a birthday party. Then you guys won't have any reason to give me a gift." Seeming proud of her idea, she bounced over to Satu as he took a seat. As if sensing his nervousness, the girl gave him a pat on the back. "Well, thank you for the gift as well, Satu-kun! As for introductions," The girl moved towards her other three guests. "This," She rested a hand on Minori's arm, "Is Minori-chan, as I'm sure you know already," She had noticed the wave Satu had given her.

She motioned to next Takumi. "That's Takumi-kun. Akiyama Takumi...yes?" She looked at the boy, furrowing her brows. Leave it to her to forget last names.

Finally, she stopped in behind Roka, patting his shoulder. "And this is Toshiro Asumi, Roka-kun's sister." With introductions done, the girl glanced from one person, to the other, before beaming. "Alrighty then! Make yourself comfortable. I'll go get the tarts and uhm, what do you guys want to drink? Then I'll open the gifts after."

"See?"Minori grinned at her friend. "So you HAVE to take all our presents, so there." Then, noticing Mitsuko's expression, she laughed. She wasn't meaning that seriously, but if that got the girl to accept their presents...why not?

"Well, I would help out. But it's the cooks who don't let me." Minori pouted for a moment, her mind screaming in defense against the maids. "They seem to think I should be doing something else, like homework."

"The 'job' isn't as bad as you make it out to be, Takumi. You could always tell her your troubles too!"The brunette grinned at her classmate, eyes dancing with happiness.

White cat? Minori almost squeaked out in fear. Shooting Takumi a hasty glance, she was glad to hear that he didn't notice it. Although Rose wouldn't take it so kindly; one not noticing her furred cuteness! And no one had seen her take Rose away...thank goodness. Not even Mitsuko. Although she had seen Rose lavish attention on Takumi, oh god. Her face reddened slightly, looking away from the latter. Guilt sank deeper when she realised that Roka saw Rose too.

An eyebrow was raised at Roka's comment. So...he admired Mitsuko. Intersting...

A worried expression came to her face as she saw Satu acting so...fidgety. He had seemed fine when she met him; she wondered why he was so nervous in front of them. The girl beamed at him, giving him an encouraging smile.

Talent? Minori hadn't thought of it that way, she merely enjoyed dancing and taking lessons with Madame. Though her teacher would be happy if she heard if someone else complimented her. A grin came to her face at that thought. "Thank you, Asumi-kun. Actually it's nothing much. It's just a result of many years of hard work."

The girl bit her lip. She hadn't wanted him to take it that way, to think that he was bothering her, or even that Roka had upset her in some way. On the contrary, it was the opposite.

Brown eyes widened at his next comment, heart pumping wildly in her chest and she whipped her head around to stare at "Asumi". Oh great. Oh great. Roka knew about...Takumi. "Um..."

She stood up as Mitsuko announced that she was about to get the drinks. "I'll help you, Mitsuko." Flashing a cheery smile, she went over to the other girl. "And don't say no." She scolded her with a defiant smile, slinging her arm around her shoulder again.

Satu waved back to the silver haired girl who intruduced herself. "Um...nice to meet you..." he said awkwardly, looking back down at his shoes.. He smiled weakily at Minori. Atleast there was someone else he knew, even if he had only met her once before. "Its lovely to see you again Minori.." he said. He tried his best to act as confident as he could but he was having major problems with this. There were too many people and he was starting to feel slightly clostraphobic. But he didn't want to make Mitsuko worry so he tried his best to be as confident as he could.

"Nice to meet you Takumi...san" Satu said. For a moment he had completely forgotten about being poilte. He used them so rarely that he wasn't actually ever sure if he was using the right ones at all. He smiled again. "Oh you're Roka's sister huh? You must be his younger sister then right?" Satu said, looking at her. He remembered clearly that Rokas older sister was a mute and since she could obviously talk he could be his older sister anyway.

He then looked back at Mitsuko and shook his head. "I'm not very thirsty at the moment but thank you for offering." he said kindly, pulling at his rather tight fitting black jeans awkwardly. Why oh why did he let his sisters dress him?

{{how late. :/ ha. I've toned down her character a little bit.}}

She was...late. As usual. It was unthinkable that a grown up girl of fifteen years old would not be able to find a large private ship at a beach, and end up walking in circles for almost an hour despite being chauffeured there. But she did it. Chihaya smoothed out her rumpled skirt and stepped aboard.

There were many people she recognized here, from the opening ceremony at Ouran. As she looked around, she wondered if her simple ensemble of a tan spaghetti strap and white chiffon skirt was too casual for this party. Her hair was let down, untidy strands held in place with simple black clips. She held Mitsuko's gift, wrapped neatly in colourful wrapping paper and finished off with a pink, frilly ribbon close to her chest. She hoped it would do.

The ship was large and a little voice in her head was urging her to go adventuring on it. However, her parents had just given her a lecture on self-control the day before, so she decided to stay on the top deck. After all, she would probably get lost on such a large vessel.

She looked around, searching for someone she was acquainted with, at least.

"Right you are," Takumi replied to Roka. "Though in the end, we do all love our younger siblings... For some, perhaps more deep down inside." He chuckled. "Well I'll keep your interest in mind, and if I ever find a free day, I'll.... erm tell Roka-kun to tell you," he finished hastily.

He paused awkwardly for a moment before quickly turning towards Mitsuko and Minori. "I... well I suppose. But she'd probably just end up bombarding me with questions of her own. It probably wouldn't solve many of my problems at all."

He inclined his head in thought. "No.... are you serious, Mitsuko-chan? I guess I was occupied with something then." He wondered how he could have overlooked something as obvious as a cat rubbing against his leg. But of course, there was no way to be sure now. His uniform had been washed soon afterwards, all traces of cat hair gone. Takumi shrugged. "Well... it's not that big of a deal I guess. If there was a cat that day, well then... I hope it found its way home."

Blinking curiously at Minori's sudden change of emotion, Takumi opened his mouth to inquire, though not before the girl had stood up and hurried to follow Mitsuko. He had barely caught his name in the whispers between Roka and Minori. Was she blushing because of him? How strange... no one had ever really shown something like that towards him. He'd had crushes on girls in the past, though it was never the other way around.

Get a hold of yourself, he said to himself. You're just dreaming. It's probably just a misunderstanding... mustn't think in the wrong direction...

"Ah... pleased to meet you as well. And yes, it's Akiyama Takumi," Takumi said, snapping out of it. He had almost missed hearing Satu's greeting. "You don't need to address me with such formalty," he added with an encouraging smile, noting the boy's nervousness. "Loosen up and have some fun."

He sighed, shook his head to clear it, and was once more the happy-go-lucky Takumi his classmates knew. Turning his head to survey the beautiful room once more, his eyes settled on yet another newcomer.

"Hello there," he called in a friendly manner. "I suppose you're here for Mitsuko-chan's party?"

Turning to the person from which the voice came from, she laughed and said, "Right! Looks like I got the right place after all..." She paused for a moment and cocked her head to one side, studying the guy once more, in detail, before speaking again. "Do I know you? I don't think you're in my class..." she furrowed her brows, trying hard to recall if they had met before.

"Nah, I don't think so." She giggled. She only knew a few of the people here, in the end, Mitsuko included. Where was she anyway? "Hello, I'm Takanashi Chihaya, pleased to meet you!" She finished by flashing grin and offering her right hand to the friendly boy. How sociable to be greeting strangers, she thought. But then again, she wasn't very much different.
