Here's a link to my on-going world-building project. I've been working on it, slowly but surely, for about two years now in conjunction with a gaming campaign I'm running.

Just a thought, but if anyone wants to put their maps up on here you're welcome to. Mine are too big at the moment unfortunately and not even half done. I have one continent half finished, but all the others are going to take a heck of a long time. I'm doing them all on A2 paper. One continent takes up two pieces, and another takes four, so you can imagine what it's like to create realistic maps on that scale. neutral

I did think about making another subject for maps, but as they come under world creation, I thought speaking about them and adding pictures (if the need or desire arises) would be best suited here.

i started my world creation i have to say it definetly takes a long time. But its a lot of fun too. I want to make a computerized map but not sure how to go about doing it but just have it done on computer paper eventualyl i would want to get it computerized if i know how lolz.

Sadly I'm not talented at drawing, or not nearly enoug hto make a map look how I'd like it to. So for now I have no illustrations of any part of my world though it's being created in my head anytime I write. It develops more or less as I need it to.

How would you scale an A2 piece of paper?
I was doing it 1mm per 10 miles, which makes 1cm 100 miles.

I've created worlds several times before and keep finding holes. I'm going to fix that tomorrow and work on my map properly, with towns, cities, and the Empires' Capitol. At the moment though I've been working with a small part of my map, so I've just decided right now to extend it beyond where my story takes place. It gives me more leeway to work with it in the future, and I can create new stories as well that take place in the same world!

However, as far as religions go I don't know if its going to be the same or differing, but as far as my current story goes the god's are real. So I might have to make an extended pantheon in a different part of the world, similar to what Tamora Pierce has in her fantasy works.

How big is that world? Mine's the same size as earth, because if it were any bigger the days would have to be longer than 24 hours, and if it was smaller they'd have to be less.

So, erm, I definitely have quite a bit problem...heh.
Most of the tiny towns and villages may not even have names, and many may not even appear on the map. Yeah, that's how I'll get around that one.
Saying that though, the world's population wasn't anywhere near as large as it is now a few hundred years ago. Even if families had several kids, many died before they reached adulthood.

That's talking historically about this world though...so, it doesn't really matter what the population is like in another world as long as it's believable and/or realistic.

On my world map, at the moment the scale on A2 is 10cm for 10 miles. So....that's quite distance. Giving that the earth is about 20,000 miles in circumference, that's just about right I think. At a guess.

I don't have a measurement for my maps yet. The ones I have, I just drew them so I can have a better view of how the countries in one continent look and that's it. I don't have a scanner so I'm not gonna post them anytime soon. mrgreen

I don't have any measurements for my maps yet, I'm thinking of doing everything in small scale measurements before I draw the continents I want to work with. At the moment I need to scale down the continent I do have so it fits in the map I'm going to create, because that's only a small part of the world. I'm making it similar to Earth, but the days and weeks are even. Earth has 365 days in a year - mine has about 360, and 30 days each month, and months are known as cycles, and years I haven't decided whether or not to call them before magic or after magic, or something to the effect. I have my calendar sorted, and I know how long a day actually is, so it's going to be fun to create.

I'm having trouble with cultures more than I am with religion. Creating religions are easy, especially if you choose pagan religions to work with. But I'm also considering using my pagan religions, choosing exactly one of their gods and using it for a monotheism religion somewhere else in the world to explain why they don't participate much in that active religion where there are many gods. It would save me having to create a new pantheon, for sure! Although I'm not sure how it would work, and I really need tips on working with cultures and building up religions around them so it works properly.

Actually, not necessarily. You just have to conserve angular momentum when the planet forms. As matter spirals in to the center of gravity and forms the planet, it will spin around the center of gravity faster in order to conserve the energy involved in the motion.

You can illustrate this by sitting on a spinning chair and holding some small exercise weights out away from your body. Set yourself spinning, then pull the weights in close to you. You'll spin faster.

So, it's not going to be the size of the planet's surface itself. It will also be how much mass is involved, how densely it gets packed, and how fast the mass that originally formed the planet was spinning to begin with. So, technically, a planet could be both as large as you want it to be and spin as fast as you want it to spin. If someone really cared enough, all one would have to do is reverse-engineer the numbers to see how fast the original mass was traveling when the planet formed and that would be your justification.

Yay! Physics! 4laugh

Ok... eek
As much as that makes sense, I'm not even going to TRY to alter anything I've already done. ^_^'

I'm going to keep mine like Earth because it makes matters so much more simple as my world is more complex than those created by most other fantasy authors I know anyway...

No reason you should. You just chose to have your world have the same physical parameters as Earth. Lots of people do that.

It's nice to know my Physics for Poets tutoring skills haven't rusted since I graduated, though. ^_^;

World creation. Now there's something I have to focus on again. I have left my little world alone to focus on plot and characters, left it half done. Maybe I should fix the rest rather than complain about how I can't write a single thing nowadays.

Personally, I'm not too fond of world building. Too many things to keep in mind if you want a realistic world. I prefer worlds like that, of course, but they're such a mess to create.
