-Where the heart is- Pushing open the door, Aki motioned into the Villa...turning to grin at Elle. "We're here! ...Elle?" The girl had paused by the pond...dropping into an easy crouch to poke at the sodden weeds. Watching silently, Aki rested one hand against the door frame...offering the lass a tiny unseen smile. What had captivated her so? Hitching the side of her skirt into an impromptu pouch, Elle reached into the shallows eagerly. Rhineweed, blue lotus, brush iris...all within four feet!! Water soaked the green fabric of her skirt pouch almost instantly...twining down her leg in twin rivulets as she stood. "I'm coming, I just fou...oh no. I'm so sorry, I should have asked!"Shaking her head, smile growing, Aki waved her off. "Not at all. I'm sure you have a good handle on what you need, and how much you need to leave. Help yourself. This is your house now too, Elle." Tossing her hair back over her shoulders, Elle trotted forward...planting a quick kiss on Aki's cheek as she passed. "Thank you." She said it so quietly Aki barely heard her. Not surprising, the elf was a bit too busy blushing to do much else. By the time she lifted her gaze, Elle had vanished farther into the house. A few hours later, her new housemate was settled into a room. Well, not so much a room as a...basement. Arms folded, obviously uncomfortable with the idea, Aki gazed around that the square stone room. There were only two little windows, at eye level...both looked out over the crumbling cliffs to the ocean beyond. "Are you...sure? I mean, there is a guest room upstairs, and..." "Thank you, but if it's okay with you, I'm comfortable here!" Motioning around, her gesture stirring both the draped cobwebs and her restless hair, Elle smiled at the grimy cell. Well, perhaps cell was the wrong word...it was one of the largest rooms in the house! If the cellar counted as a room, at least. "Well, at least let me give you a hand scrubbing and whatnot. Tomorrow, we'll go shopping and see if we can't brighten it up!" Turning slowly, hair swirling to settle around her shoulders, Elle fixed Aki with a sad smile. "Perhaps...I should tell you my tale. I'm sorry, I...don't have anything to spend. I'll be fine with what I have, and-"She trailed off slowly as Aki withdrew something from her inner jacket pocket. All hint of a smile had vanished from Aki's face as she handed the fist sized jewel to Elle...the light from the tiny windows glittering along the surface of the finely cut gem. It was perfectly crimson, the very embodiment of the word. "Perhaps, before you tell your tale, I should tell mine." Raising her eyes from the stone slowly, face slack with shock, Elle nodded. It was a ruby...there was no doubt about it. A ruby big enough to buy kingdoms, start wars, or end them... Following her flatmate up the stairs, Elle's face animated slowly once more. Excitement sparking in her eyes, she began her mental exercises...preparing to commit the tale to memory. Feet pattering against the stairs as she hurried to catch up, Elle took a breath and stepped into the hallway. It was amazing the way fate unfolded...in a world not yet forsaken.

-What lies beneath- Filling Aki's cup to the brim, Elle nestled back as she settled the little clay tea pot onto the table between them. "So...the Center was an orphanage?""Of sorts. An adoption center, perhaps! I didn't approach them for a child, however...I just followed the footsteps of the beasts that burrowed upward from below my house." Leaning forward, Aki blew the steam from her tea...watching the cream swirl with the jasmine. Flicking her gaze upwards to Elle, she caught the girl's attention with her soft words. "They came in droves, in search of the dark egg that tempted them with its power. Power that would sustain their vile machines." Elle gripped her tea with both hands, palms sweating against the scalding porcelain. She loved to listen as much as she loved to spin...a well told tale was a rare pleasure. She could almost see the great slapping feet and beady eyes of the Kofula as Aki described them...shuddering at the recount of their attack on the Reju center. "So...you sold them the sun." Eyes bright, Elle peered at the laughing elf...sipping her tea slowly. "You could say that. Every time a solar panel fails, I replace it. Every time they burn out an elemental stone..." Hefting the ruby in her fist, Aki tossed it suddenly to Elle...giggling as the girl splashed her tea in a hurry to catch it. "...it comes to me. They have the power they desire, and I have the means to keep providing it." The arrangement suddenly sounded a bit cold. She'd already explained the bit about splitting the proceeds with the Reju Center, though...that surely counted for something. Settling back into her chair, Elle wiped the tea from the back of her hand and cuddled the heavy stone upon her lap. "I see. Well, perhaps you're right...it's silly of me to argue against a shopping trip. I appreciate it....thank you, Aki."Beaming in relief, Aki leaned back as well. She hadn't been sure how Elle would react, but she seemed to be comfortable with the situation. "But..."Ah, there it was. "But?" "I insist that you let me give you a hand, and any time you have need of a brew...let me know?""A...brew?" Elle nodded...fingers caressing the herb sprig upon her sash. "Once I have a few days to gather, I should be able to mix a tea or tincture to suit any needs....you might have." Finishing her tea in a smooth pull, Elle let her cup clatter back upon its saucer and rose. "I think, until we pick up some bedding, I'll rest here in the living room. Is that okay?"Aki accepted her hand, rising as well. "Yes! That-yeah. That's fine! Well, I'm going to peek in on the kids, Ready to meet them tomorrow?" Silently, Elle nodded...pulling Aki in for a warm hug. Patting her cheek, she stepped back...gathering both cups from the table. "Sounds wonderful. Goodnight...and thank you again."Watching Elle stroll to the kitchen, Aki stood befuddled...brows knitting slowly. "Ah, but...your tale! I haven't gotten to hear it!!" Glancing back coyly over one shoulder, Elle offered her a wink. "What's the rush? We can chat more tomorrow!"Aki nodded as Elle vanished into the kitchen...the plumbing groaning as the hot water was called for. Tomorrow...of course! No rush at all...

-Sweet dreams are made of these- The light spilling forth from below Aki's door had finally been quenched...the smell of freshly snuffed candle drifting to the front room a few minutes later. Sighing, Elle shifted position...spread languidly upon the curved couch. Sleep wouldn't come. Couldn't come. The dreams would be there. She could feel them, bubbling below her consciousness in a mass of guilt and fear. Her hand slid from the edge of the couch, fingers questing into the greenery filled basket. The blue lotus was still fresh. Wadding the blossom into a pill, Elle pushed it past her lips...chewing thoughtfully. Crude, but better than nothing. Her tongue numbed slowly as she nibbled...eyes drifting to the stars outside the window. The sky was so wide, so endless. Burying her face into her pillow, Elle tried to imagine the room that would be hers. Secure and silent, far under those twinkling heavens... Pulling the chewed petals from her mouth, flicking the crushed pulp into the fire, Elle watched the flames wave in appreciation. She couldn't wait until she had a proper mortar and pestle...a new drying rack, and polished bottles... Images danced as her breathing shallowed...face still pressed into the embroidered cushion. Slowly, her shoulders relaxed. The dreams were there, but they had been shattered and tinted by the pull of the lotus...changed and reshaped into something wholly unrecognizable. She only saw their distorted faces, the distant cries lost in the pounding rush. Soon, morning would be here. Soon.

Yes! Yesyesyesyesyes! Finally, a legitimate reason to invite Elle to the Benedict Center! Asrafel had flown up to where he knew Aki and Elle now lived, and slipped a business card for the center into the mail slot. On it was written a date and time in bright colored crayons, and on the back was written a very colorful note written in similar crayon manner.

-A modest proposal- Tapping the spoon against the side of the dish, Elle settled the lid down onto the cast iron kettle. The warm smell of baking apricots drifted up from the hearth, the cobbler bubbling as the flames blackened the underside of the dish. A cup of tea sat steeping upon the counter...the tag waving in the breeze from the steam. Taking a sip of her own, wincing at the shallow flavor of commercial chamomile, Elle shifted from foot to foot as she cooked. The floor was sticky...of course, half a dozen kids tended to have that effect. Luckily, none seemed to be early risers. It was lovely to have the house to herself! The cobbler would take half an hour or so yet. Burying her face in the crook of her arm as she yawned, Elle wandered to the front door...tea still in hand. The sunrise was waning, but still gorgeous. Not everything was as it had been, though...and she had an eye for detail. A little card rested upon the threshold...the bright scribbles drawing her attention. Well. A party? Smiling wryly, Elle tucked the decorated business card into her cleavage casually and took one more look around. Asra was long gone, it seemed. Well, she still had some time...perhaps after Aki had woken, she'd have a chance to make it into town. At the very least, she could ask the lad what she'd truly been wondering...without arousing elven curiosity. "I'll see you there, little Skydancer!"

-Early morning night life- Levi scooped the last bite from his bowl, dropping it into the sink as he finished chewing. "Hanku!" He was already on the move, dashing towards the door to get some play time in before Wasa arrived. "Don't thank me, Elle made it!" She called after him, but it was no use...he was already up to his knees in the pond. Sighing, Aki tapped the spoon against the side of her daughters bowl to shake loose the crumbs, and popped the spoonful of warm cobbler into her open mouth. "Yum?" Smiling widely, some fruit from the cobbler dotting her chin, Nisha shrieked with affirmative laughter. Her hands slapped the tray of the high chair gleefully...the crumbs from the oat filled cobbler jumping as the tray shook. "Maaaabuhbuh!!"Another bite followed, and another, until the little bowl was empty. Holding it up proudly, Aki showed Nisha the picture of the butterfly they'd uncovered at the bottom of the bowl. "All gone! You did it!!" Nisha clapped, still laughing loudly...sticky hands slapping together and throwing up a spray of cobbler bits. Desperate was doing his part by cleaning the still warm kettle...finishing the rest of the cobbler aside from the two bowls set aside for Aki and Elle. Her new housemate was already out for the day...the note she left said she was at a party. Smiling wryly as she wiped Nisha's hands and face, Aki shook her head. She'd been living here for months before she finally met her neighbors, and Elle managed to get invited to a party within the first twenty four hours! Well, she'd implied Aki was invited as well. Perhaps she'd stop by, since she had intended to go out shopping with Elle today anyway. It was even the right part of town! "Okay, all clean! Oooh, and listen...Wasa's here! Want to see Auntie Wasa?" Levi's happy greetings already rang across the lawn. Plucking the babe from her high chair, Aki shuffled Desperate away from the kettle and towards the door. "Come on, you two! Time to go!!" Grabbing Nisha's changing bag that she'd placed by the door, Aki wandered out into the morning sun to meet Wasabi. ** Twisting this way and that, Aki modeled her new red shirt. It was a little bold, but considering how Elle was dressed, she should fit right in. Smoothing the crimson fabric across her chest, Aki sighed. She looked young, but she didn't always feel it. Letting the off the shoulder shirt lay across the foot of the bed, Aki dug out her shortest red shirt. Some tall black boots, and her biggest ruby necklace and her outfit was complete. Still clad in only her short plush bath robe from the morning's shower, Aki plopped down in the chair on the deck. A small bottle of crimson nail polish weighed down one of the pockets...giving it a few good shakes, she unscrewed the lid. She couldn't help but feel awkward and showing up alone, and only invited second hand. For a moment, she considered trying to track down Alania to go with her, but couldn't get over the feeling of vague rudeness at inviting someone third hand. Sighing, Aki spread her fingers and smoothed the brush across her thumbnail. It would do her good to get out and have some fun, even if it was only a drink or two. Blowing lightly on her crimson nail, Aki wiggled her sun warmed toes. She'd be fashionably late, of course!!

-Kisses and Crackers- Levi stirred his dinner slowly...gazing with dark and suspicious eyes at Aki over the rim of his bowl. His headscarf was in the laundry, instead he wore his hair back in a simple shaggy ponytail. Scooping up a steaming potato, he blew on it gingerly...azure gaze never leaving Aki's face. She was up to something. Nisha, however, was oblivious. Graham crackers covered the tray of her highchair, smashed and crumbled in her tiny fists. Licking the crumbs from one tiny palm, a fine string of drool dipping to the plastic, she smacked happily. "Abababa!!" Soggy graham crackers were excellent! Desperate was occupied glancing from Levi to Aki, ears furled in confusion. The silence was heavy...Nisha was the only one immune to it. Brush of a tail swishing as he waited, Desperate finally stomped to break the tension. Dishes rattled and leapt in the cupboards, the clatter jerking Aki to attention. "DESPERATE! What?!" He had his food! Five slices of water melon and an entire bowl of oats, milk, and honey rested on the low table by his feet!! Swinging his trunk upwards, Desperate pointed comically towards Levi. The pirate's eyes still hadn't left Aki's face. "Yoh.""Yes?" "Whus dat?" Motioning rudely with his soup spoon, Levi gestured toward the untouched place setting at the head of the table. A plate sat unused beside Aki, complete with its own bowl, silverware, and mug. Raising a brow, Aki settled back with a smile. "It's dishes." Levi's glare grew a touch darker. "Foh...hu?""For me. If I may?"Elle strolled into the kitchen, bare feet silent on the stone floor. The young pirate twisted in his seat, one arm over the back as he stared towards the unfamiliar voice. Unfamiliar voice....and unfamiliar body. What a body it was. Levi shifted about in his seat...mouth hanging absurdly open as he stared in abject fascination. "Buddy 'ell."Aki's palm met her forehead with a significant smack. Flopping onto the tray of her highchair in a fit of giggles, Nisha scattered her graham crackers every which way. Her little hand bobbed against her forehead in imitation of her embarrassed guardian. Aki was so funny!! With a gesture almost as classic as Levi's expression, Elle reached out as she passed and shut his mouth with a crook of her finger. Ruffling his hair in a way entirely too sisterly for Levi's liking, Elle took her seat. "Levi, this is Elle. Be polite. Elle, these are my children....Levi, Nisha, and Desperate." Motioning to the elephant with a shrug and a smile, Aki nonetheless introduced the Daemon as family. Nisha burbled in approval, one flapping hand reaching towards the young pachyderm. Or towards his oatmeal, one of the two. Sliding out of his seat, Levi was already on the move. Sweeping Elle's hand from the table before she had the chance to object, he pressed a warm kiss against her knuckles. His other hand arched out in a flourish, just as he'd seen in the picture book of tales. Hand dropping to the pile of sodden cookies, Desperate forgotten, Nisha watched with wide and pale eyes. What a strange silence. Something bad happened, she reasoned. Was some one going to get time out? Aki was almost out of her seat, but Elle raised her other hand in time. Motioning the elf to sit, Elle inclined her head to Levi and withdrew her hand gracefully. "Well met. I expect such a gentleman will behave himself during tomorrows lessons?"Levi was nearly back in his seat by the time that sank in. "Lesson?" What an ominous word. It was Aki, not Elle, who responded. "Lessons. Elle is going to be your...governess?" There had to be a better word! Frowning for a moment, Aki finally gave up with a sigh. "She has stories and projects for you to work on. For both of you!" Turning to include Nisha in her smile, Aki tried to make home schooling sound just as bright and cheery as possible. Neither child appeared to buy it. Levi's sidelong suspicion was ruined by his drifting gaze. "Pugget?""Projects. Yes! We'll make some things, others we'll take apart!" Elle smiled, tuning into the surge of interest that rose from Levi's distracted mind. Ah, so he was the adventurous type! Nisha was still a bit aloof. She stared at Elle as though the woman suggested something vile, little face scrunched up in obvious disdain. Her expression lightened as Aki tickled her under the chin. She didn't have any clue what a lesson was, but Elle's tone caught her attention. It was a mommy tone! But Aki already filled that role... Throwing graham cracker seemed like a good compromise. Shrieking with laughter as Elle picked the soggy cookie chunks from her hair, Nisha rocked back in her high chair. Desperate didn't seem so amused. The Daemon darted forward, picking at the mess as best he could with his trunk tip. Even Aki was on her feet, sighing as she leaned forward with a napkin. "I'm so sorry, Elle..." "A baby is a baby is a baby. Some things never change. Thank you, both of you, but it's fine!" Reassuring the pair with a wave of her hand, Elle simply shook the rest of the crumbs from her burnished hair. She'd be messier before the night was through! Well, that wasn't much of a reaction. Nisha settled for eating the crackers rather than hurling them, sucking her soggy crumb covered fingers clean. Levi, however, hadn't been distracted from the issue at hand. "Ahmorrow?""Tomorrow. Yes." The gentle correction went unnoticed by the lad. "Meet me for breakfast, we'll start then!"A few things had begun to filter through for Levi. Tomorrow...that meant Elle would be back! Stories and projects didn't sound too bad. Besides, Elle had the sweetest smell to her...something between sage and apple. Not a bad change, after Desperate's company! Keeping one eye on the kids, Aki leaned in to offer Elle the bread basket. "Still think you're up to this? I really appreciate the help." Elle nodded, her smile genuine. Little upturned faces dwelled in a silent memory within her, the image all but faded by the smell of the warm bread and the pinch of her rumbling stomach. Hopefully, that too would fade. She was needed here.

-A Moment of Peace- Brushing the panels of her skirt to either side, Elle crouched gracefully by the glazed pot...fingers running lightly over the silhouette of the dying plant. A bell tinkled from within the folds of her sash as she leaned forward, carefully pinching only the driest golden leaves from the green stalk. She didn't know much about growing houseplants, but more than Aki it seemed...the soil was dry, and the leaves fading!! No, what Elle knew was the potential of the plant. How to harvest, how to dry...how much to mix, when to grind. This species, however, was empty. Good for the soil, and good for the air, aside from that it was only pretty to look at. Her easy smile appeared as she gathered the leaves in her palm. All the shades of gold and green, yes...pretty to look at, indeed. Standing slowly, keys clinking and jewelry chiming, Elle strolled back into the living room with the leaves cupped gently in her hands. Even in death, they held some delight! Silently, she fed the leaves into the glow of the fireplace one by one. They browned and curled, staining black before fading white...a gorgeous prelude to the thin plume of grey smoke that pushed sinuously upward. Eyes catching the light from the brief flare, Elle settled down with a quiet sigh. Her hair plumed and settled behind her as she did so, seemingly caught on a breath of wind that touched nothing else in the room. It was so rare to have time to herself...having a family was a complete path. She loved their wide eyes and the tug of tiny hands, just as much as she enjoyed such leisurely time. Shaking her hair back as she leaned forward, Elle warmed her hands over the tiny fire. Best to use such time wisely. Perhaps after she'd warmed herself, she'd throw a pinch of sweet sage to the fire and draw up the recipe for the tea she'd been working on. Nisha would be cutting her first teeth soon, and from what she'd gathered that meant Desperate would be in pain as well. Tea strong enough to soothe an elephant would be quite a feat...a challenge she was looking forward too! Brightening with a small smile of contentment, Elle crumbled the last of the fallen leaves into the fire...bringing her fingers to her nose as she inhaled gently. Such a fine time of night...surely an auspicious time to brew!! ** The fire was banked, and the children tucked in. It was cool in her lower room, the high windows open to let in the evening breeze from the sea. Always a restless time of night, despite the peace of the sleeping house above her. Picking fine chains and delicate leaves from her hair, Elle settled her trinkets upon the nightstand by her low bed. Her dress followed, folded carefully into the cedar trunk atop the lavender. Clad only in the shaft of moonlight easing through the glass, Elle stretched and gathered her hair into a ponytail. A few sharp twists, and it was knotted into a bun...held in place by a sliver of ivory. She knelt on the cool stone of the cellar floor, rummaging quietly through the box Aki had given her. There were a few things she had in common with the elf...style, however, was not one of them. Finally selecting a cream colored night slip, Elle tugged it over her head...pulling it down over her hips. The pale satin was rumpled from being folded, but smoothed as it was pulled tight across her chest. Elle lifted her ring of keys from the bedstand as she passed. The little bronze one fit the antique armoire, and the doors eased open with quiet protest. It wasn't kept locked out of secrecy. The freestanding closet held no clothes, instead, potent herbs hung drying from the bar, and dark stoppered bottles crowded the shelves. It wasn't for her protection, it was for the children. Soon, her little copper brazier was filled with bright coals, and all her ingredients for the teething tea had been gathered. For now, Elle let them rest...dipping her fingers into the pouch she'd pulled from the very top shelf of the locked wardrobe. A small purple pouch, sewn with crystal beads and bright gold embroidery. From it she pulled a pinch of dark herb, and sprinkled the crushed leaf gently upon the coals. The sweet smell of salvia divinorum, Diviner's Sage, coiled upward in a white blossom of smoke. Eyes drifting shut as she took a deep and calming breath, Elle mentally reviewed her recipe. All seemed in place, and the warm buzz of the smoke had finally settled through her. In a large wooden bowl, Elle began her mix. She started with the base of the tea, jasmine and popcorn for taste, with a touch of chamomile for sweet dreams. For an adult, she'd have added green tea leaves, but a wired elephant wasn't a pleasant thought. Instead, she thought about Nisha's situation. Teething would lead to superficial pain as well as a headache...not to mention low moods. Thin strips of white willow bark and a pinch of feverfew blossom would help with the ache. The ginger root and rosemary would hopefully be smothered by the jasmine....as much as Elle enjoyed a bold taste, the babe seemed to have a delicate palate. Ginko would balance the babe's mood, and a tiny pinch of ground skullcap leaf to ease her mind and gums. For many long minutes, Elle knelt upon her cushion, working over the bare stone floor. The snap and hiss of the Diviner's Sage assured her it was still burning, though she paid no attention to the rising smoke. All her focus had been given to the herbs. They had been dried properly, she could tell by the way they crumbled. The doses were correct, and easy on the stomach. Nisha would have a much easier time of teething than Aki suspected...even Desperate would be at ease. Elle sifted two pinches into each square of cheesecloth. Tying each off with a length of anise twine, she kept careful count. The batch should have been enough to produce over two dozen tea bags. Twenty eight tea bags later, the bowl was empty. The brazier was moved to her nightstand, smoke leaping upwards once more as she added another pinch of sage to the coals. Everything was once again in its place...the armoire locked and new tea mix wrapped in a linen bag. Settling into bed, still clad in the short nightgown that Aki had gifted her, Elle pulled her covers close. The divinorum had done its job, her body was tired, and her mind calm. Her thoughts did not stray to blurred faces and distant cries...instead, images were rising before sleep had fully claimed her. The peace of the house seeped into her, and Elle let it do so...waiting for the deep silence that seemed so rare. Tomorrow would be a busy day, she was taking both children out for their lessons in town. A busy day, in a busy city...that all seemed so very far away. Smiling just a bit, Elle listened to the crackle of leaves upon coals until dreams gently took even that away.

Elle September 22ndWhat a beautiful afternoon! I missed the morning, sadly...but when you have two children and an elephant to attend to, that's not surprising. Levi is working quietly, for once. I thought he would object, but he seems rather excited to learn to read. I'm not sure what inspired the motivation...he seems like more of a 'hands on' type of boy. I shouldn't question too deeply...as long as he's trying, I'm happy. Out of the two of them, it's actually Nisha that's proving the most difficult. She resists anything I tell her, and refuses to cooperate with even the fun things I offer. She's so young, I suppose I can understand...but it still hurts, in a way. I've never had a child dig their heels in for so long! At least Desperate seems willing to listen. Speaking of Desperate, I'm making a trip into town to gather supplies and buy what I can't find. It's been a while since I've seen Frae, and I suppose I'd like to spend some quiet time there. My room here just isn't the same, as much as I love this family. I miss the smells, the warmth....the trees. The coast is beautiful... Ah, no point being wishful. I've got the weekend off, and the will to use it. I'll do my gathering, spend a night with Frae, and pick up the bottles. I'm glad they were willing to trade, despite what Aki offers, I don't feel right accepting her money. I trade one filled bottle for three empty, not a bad deal! Not the best either, but there is no point in complaining. I can't wait to begin brewing. Levi's growing up so quickly, I want to show him something less harmful than the alcohol I know he's heading towards. Something healthy and moderate...I've never understood how people can drink something as harsh as fermented grapes and grains. That is one thing Aki's cellar has going for her. It's so spacious, I'm sure I could fit my whole operation in nicely. Not only that, but the temperature is perfect....not so much for my comfort, but wonderful for settling. The barrels should be easy, once I have the first hand batch mixed up. Any old brewer would be happy to trade for samples of a new line! Well, it seems Nisha is having more fun throwing the blocks than sorting them by color. Let's see if we can't calm her before she breaks a window....maybe she is teething! -Elle

More than meets the eye...
Raising up onto his tip toes, Levi chewed his lip absently....staring into the tower room with wide and shining eyes. Melisande was brushing her hair, singing quietly to herself. Her shoulders were bare, painted with the colors of the sunset.
Sighing silently, resting his head to the side against the door frame, Levi looked from the coil of crimson ribbon to the glow of the hidden rune. She was so...pretty! Hair shading his dancing blue eyes, Levi's grin spread wide and wistful. Her hair was the perfect color of gold, which was by far his favori-
"LEVI!"
The young pirate nearly jumped out of his skin, spinning around into a crouch at the sharp whisper. Elle was at the base of the stairs, one hand on the sconce...eyes blazing with indignation. Motioning with one firm gesture, she pointed down the stairs and towards the kitchen.
Despair washing over him, Levi opened his mouth to protest...snapping it closed at a warning growl from Elle. Risking one last glance, he nearly froze in his steps as Melisande turned...curves silhouetted perfectly against the brilliant orange sky. Sighing again, he shook his head in regret and slogged down the stairs.
A few moments later, he found himself at the table with Elle...watching her back glumly as she lifted the kettle on the heat. Slumped in his chair, wishing he was still up in the tower watching Melisande brush her hair, Levi finally glanced up as Elle set two steaming tea cups on the table.
"Trouble, eh?"
"Trouble? More like an impromptu lesson. Levi..." Taking a moment to sort her thoughts, Elle cradled the warm cup with both hands...pausing to blow a curl of steam from the surface. "What you were doing is not a respectful thing to do! You-"
"Wha?! I lookit you! Yer lubly!"
Brows furrowing a bit as she was interrupted, Elle's concerned features finally melted into a wry smile. "I know, and I told you I didn't have a problem with that...but I can't speak for Pasha. Levi, you have to understand, she's a child."
Unconcerned, Levi took a sip of his tea...shrugging as he gulped it down and gasped out steam. "Yah? Me too!"
Once again, Elle's brows drew together. Levi was trying to frustrate her, she damn well knew it. His flippant attitude was charming, as long as it was directed elsewhere. "Levi, she's innocent! Do you understand what I mean? It's nice that you admire how pretty she is, but that doesn't mean you're allowed to sneak around and peek at her! It's disrespectful! Wait until she's learned about the world, and then she'll let you know how she feels on her own. The first time she catches you, at least. So, are we clear?"
Finishing his tea in one more pull, setting it down with a clatter, Levi pushed away from the table and shook his head. The braid he'd worked into the side of his hair whapped against his cheek, dark locks shading his eyes at the gesture. "Nope. S'okay though! No worries, eh?"
Elle raised a brow, obviously a little miffed at being blatantly disregarded. Then again, a pirate was a pirate...and logic was rarely the way to get through to one. "Fine. You know, I kind of guessed that would be the answer. I guess if it's NOT okay, you'd know, hmm?"
Pausing, one hand on the kitchen doorway, Levi turned back with both brows lifted in surprise. Nodding happily, he offered Elle a twinkling grin. So, she understood after all! "Yup! I...hey. HEY."
Though his eyes got steadily wider, the room was growing blurry...light fading gently into a warm wash of pure color as Elle's blend took effect. Hands outstretched, Levi staggered back towards Elle...mouth hanging open in shock. "Ah...canna see! Ah BIND!"
Pulling an entirely different tea blend from her cup, Elle set it on the saucer with a small smile and took another sip of her own tea. "You're not blind...if you were blind, all you'd see would be darkness. Guess it's not okay after all, eh?" Using his favorite inflection, Elle rose out of her seat gracefully as Levi wandered closer...the lad bumping into the brown blur of the table.
"Ah wanna see! 'Nuff!"
Finishing her tea, Elle stepped deftly around the bumbling young scallywag and delivered the dishes into the sink. She'd wash them later, this was too good to miss! It wasn't that she enjoyed being cruel, but... "I'm here to teach, Levi...not to condone voyerism. Something tells me this will be a valuable lesson indeed...on many levels! Enjoy. When you've learned said lesson, come find me, and I'll do what I can to get you fixed up."
Strolling past the boy, collecting breakable objects from shelves and counters as she went, Elle padded barefoot out of the kitchen. Levi, meanwhile, grumbled and cursed...bouncing slowly around the kitchen as he searched for the door. "Aww...bloody hell!"
Calling back over one shoulder, Elle put a smile in her voice. "Keep cursing like that with Melisande in the house, and the same thing that happened to your sight will happen to your tongue!"
Suddenly, the kitchen was quiet, punctuated only by a crash as Levi found the fridge. Elle slipped through the door that lead down to the cellar, pulling it firmly shut behind her. It wouldn't do to have the lad trip, after all. A lesson was one thing, bodily harm quite another.
Finally plopping down on the kitchen floor, Levi sighed...pulling his knees up against his chest and stubbornly waiting for the tea to fade. He never heard Melisande approach...how could he? Her ribbon trailed gracefully above the stone floor.
Pausing for a moment behind the lad, she dimpled into a smile...cheeks blushing the faintest pink. She'd heard the argument between Elle and Levi, and although she appreciated the other woman's protection, it wasn't necessary. She'd know Levi was there from the moment he crept up the stairs!
Sinking downward, the glow from her rune moving across the grey stone floor in a spreading pool of luminescence, Melisande wrapped her arms gently around Levi from behind.
For a moment, he stiffened...one hand raising to feel for the face over his shoulder. As his hand touched Meli's soft curls, he relaxed with a smile...snuggling back into her gentle embrace. Ha! If only Elle could see him now!
Petting the hair away from Levi's eyes in a fashion that was either innocent or sisterly, Melisande lowered her mouth to hover beside the pirate's ear. She wasn't mad, not at all...why would people have been granted such lovely forms if they weren't meant to be seen? She loved the admiration the boy so freely offered...it warmed her to the core, and her rune grew a touch brighter.
Quiet and heartfelt, the words began to rise...not a song of her own, but one she remembered from the music box Aki often left on for her at night. Sweet tones caressed through the boy's hair, an offering far sweeter than a forbidden peek.
"Time moves a summer wind~ I can see your face again~ Was it such a tragedy Being you ... Being me?
Smoke clears, the pictures fades~ but I stay back in yesterday~ All the strangers come and go All of them will never know..."
Still petting the soft golden curls, Levi stared at the wash of color that surrounded him...purples and oranges, browns and pinks. From below, Elle listened as well...smiling gently as the sweet tones filtered down through the Villa. Perhaps Melisande understood more than she'd given the girl credit for.
At the very least, her compassion spoke highly. She understood very well the wish to hold someone close...and at the thought, a face rose within her mind. This was not her time, however. She was here to guide, to aid...not to indulge, despite the desires that swelled around her. Not yet, anyway. With a nod, Elle shut the vent...leaving the two to their moment. This was a lesson for them all, it seemed.

[Continued from Shauna's journal!]
Wishing once again that she had her staff with her, Elle idly smoothed one of the tassels at her hip...the gravel crunching under her bare feet as she walked. It was hard not to watch Asra as they strolled. It wasn't simply his charisma that attracted her gaze...after what they'd just experienced, she'd come to realize there was more to him than she'd ever expected.
Her stomach still tightened at the thought of the darkness. It wasn't the darkness of an absence of light, instead it was the darkness of Nothing...that vast and empty place she'd been cradled in for so long. To be brought back there, so abruptly, had been a bit unsettling. There were too many things here she wished to live for...and one of them was right beside her.
During their walk, they'd talked of many things...but none of them were what she truly wished to know. There, in the city under the false lights, seemed like the wrong place for such words. They were almost home, though...and Elle could feel herself begin to relax. The walk had done wonders for her state of mind.
Slipping one arm through Asra's, she pressed lightly against him...her fingers settling gently on his rich skin. "We're close...just a few more minutes! I appreciate you walking with me."
Her pace slowed, as did Asra's unless he tugged his arm free. She no longer had to glance downwards to capture his gaze...he'd grown into something strong and beautiful, though the lad she'd known was before her still. "And...I appreciate you showing me what you did. I'm not sure I fully understand, but too often that's the way of things."
Offering him a wry smile as the breeze tugged her hair across her face, Elle glanced just beyond Asra's shoulder. There, nestled in the trees at the base of the hill, was the old tree house Levi used to run away too. Giving his arm a squeeze, she nodded towards it with her chin.
"Would you mind if we took a break before the hike up to the Villa?" Amber eyes bright with the thought of climbing into the old tree, Elle raised both brows with a small smile. "I'd still like to hear whatever you wish to tell..."

Asrafel had been only too happy to walk Elle home, for a variety of reasons. The most important was, of course, to spend more time talking with her, but there was an overwhelming need to act on his own decisions, and walk his own paths. There was no hidden agenda in his actions now, no guiding hand to rule over him.
He was on his own.
He took advantage of his freedom only too happily, and every smile he gave was just a little brighter, a little more genuine because of it.
"It was nothing, Elle. I love doing it! I'll walk you home anytime, just let me know and I'm there." He nodded sharply, and slowed once they neared the treehouse. At Elle's suggestion, his face lit up at the idea.
"Oh, I'd love that! It sounds like a great idea." He turned to look at her briefly, worry clouding his mind for a moment. "No one will mind that I'm here, right? I wouldn't want to upset anyone.."
As worried as he was, he was just a bit excited at the prospect of a treehouse. He'd never been in one before!

"I don't think we'll upset anyone...unless I'm mistaken, we're actually on Aki's property. That's her 'driveway', there!" Pointing at a fork in the gravel road, Elle motioned to the west where it angled uphill. Letting her arm slip finally from Asra's, Elle offered him a reassuring wink and turned to pick her way through the scrub.
An old rope ladder led up to the one room fort. Though it was well built, it was in disarray...ferns poked from the corners, and moss settled like a blanket across the roof. Small white mushrooms dotted the wetter sections of the wood, Elle was suddenly even more pleased they were making the side trip. She'd been running low on tree oyster mushrooms!
She gave the rope ladder a tug to test it, and finally slipped one foot into the loop. Hauling herself upward, skirt parting around her thighs as she climbed, Elle pulled herself higher into the tree. "Looks like it's still in one piece! Smells a bit damp, but not too bad!"
With one final push, she leaned into the treehouse...turning herself around and peering over the edge to her companion. His smile was so bright, she could never resist returning it. Twisting her hair out of her face, she gave him a grin and quick once over. "Come on up...but no fair flying!"
