And old joke, but it always makes me smile:
A German teenager applying for work at the coast guard is desperate for a job so he embellishes on his resume just a tad. He mentions he can speak a total of twelve different languages fluently, when in reality he can only speak German and took a bit of English in high school. He figures mentioning so many different languages absolutely must get him on at least one of the coast guard's many ships, and by the time anybody notices he only really speaks German, he'll have proven himself a capable deckhand.
Unfortunately, 12 languages was a bit too much. The coast guard decides to place him on the comm. listening for incoming international ships. Just his luck, as soon as he's left alone, a Canadian ship starts broadcasting:
"Mayday! Mayday! We require immediate assistance!" cried the Canadian freigther over the intercom.
The German teen jumps out of his seat, horrified and unsure what to do. If he goes for help, they'll know he's lied and he'll be out of a job. If he doesn't, the Canadians may die if he doesn't recall enough of his English. With a shaking hand, the German turned on the intercom and whispered tentatively into the microphone:
"A...Allo..? W-waat zeems to be da pwablem?"
"Mayday! We're sinking! We're sinking! Oh God, we're sinking!"
The German lets out an exasperated sigh of relief and sits back in his chair, a hand over his racing heart.
"Oh, tank goodnish!" he says to the Canadians.
"What?! We're sinking, man!"
"Yess, aye hurd yoo. And waat eggzactly are yoo sinking about?"

In the offchance that you didn't get the joke, the German thought the Canadians said they were "thinking." whee
