Ola started at this, her old face turning kindly towards the pup. How could an old crone like her raise this little wolfess? Yes, she could teach her many things about the pack and it's history but...oh...that's right. There were others here now, others who would help with the parenting, to teach her to hunt and to grow to be a fine lady indeed.
She'd never had her own pups, never had a mate. She'd never even felt any love towards any male despite the fact that she was quite able to take a mate in her youth. She'd watched her sister start a family and part of her had been jealous, yet she was dedicated to the teachings and did not want to divide her attention.
But now this little pup had come into her life and she did not have the heart to turn her away. How could she say no?
But Ola would give her an answer later, she had other things to see to now.
Come then. She replied, stepping into the water itself, it was cold but not uncomfortably so and as she slipped into the deeper rim so that it sloshed up around her sides she peered back at the pup, waving her tail so it sent ripples over to the bank. It's quite safe. Just stick to the shallows.

Still gazing about her, wide-eyed, Ant followed Ola's suit and clambered into the water, her little paws beating the water so that it danced around her as she struck up a little swim.
If it hadn't been for Ola's telling her to stick to the shallows, Ant might have paddled into the water and just kept on going, so immersed was she in her surroundings. She had just started to paddle out of the shallows when Ola's words sounded in her ears and, almost sheepishly, she turned back, drawing her mind back to her immediate environment. The water.
"Is there anything else I'm supposed to do?" She asked earnestly, her ears pricking as she frolicked about in the shallows, her tail waving through the water. Every so often, her muzzle would disappear below the surface with a splutter, only to poke through again, plastered with a cheery grin.
The little pup's eyes twinkled with every beat she took in the water. Having fun was one of her strong suits. She could run and frolic and play all day and never get tired. Swimming was part of play for her, so naturally she could do it just fine.

The old wolf watched the little pup's antics and couldn't help but smile. She was a bright spark in the darkness, a little star who had fallen from the heavens. Maybe Cerridwen had sent her, a youth as new hope for the future. A new generation. She splashed back to the shallows and nudged her nose against the little pup's head.
Just keep your head above water, little wolf-duck. She laughed. You may swim til your heart is content. Afterwards I'll show you my den. You may stay with me if you wish and for as long as you like. There is plenty of room and it gets lonely sometimes. Old Darya doesn't talk much anymore.
Darya was the skull that was embedded in the earth above her den.
Ola pulled herself out from the water and shook herself. Then slowly she turned and sat, watching the little autumn pup swimming.

Ant grinned at that, almost cheekily, but her muzzle now longer disappeared beneath the surface as she paddled up and down along the shallows. From deeper waters, it might have been almost comical to see the tiny little pup swimming about in the shallows, hardly big enough to touch the bottom with her little paws.
Ant paused in her strokes - standing tippawed in the shallows so that she half floated and half stood - and nodded, rather vigorously, her gratitude. For everything that Ola had done up to this point, and would do beyond. This, she was sure, was just the first of many thank you's that were sure to come, for Ola and for any other wolf of the pack she was now a part of.
Eventually, the little pup had, indeed, swum to her heart's content, and she paddled over and clambered from the water, shaking the water from her coat. Her fur had been flung upright from the vigorous shaking it had all endured, and for a moment she looked rather like a pudgy, short little puppy, before it smoothed down slightly again.
With exuberance befitting a puppy, Ant bounded over to Ola, her tail wagging. Most likely, the swim had done her more good than a five-course meal could have. There was always something that triggered an opening to Ant's innate joy, and the swim had done it. She grinned almost goofily up at Ola as she settled down next to her again, awaiting whatever would come next.

She watched the pup swimming and thought back to the time when she had first been introduced to the water as a pup. She had been led down to its edge, pushed in and then left to get on with it. Luckily for her she had been a strong swimmer and had learned to love it. It had been her younger sister who had more trouble.
She remembered traipsing in after the pup and pulling her out to safety.
Memories...The crone never much dwelled on her own personal history. It was not something she found much pleasure in because there was only Kalani left. She felt bad for him too, because he was the only one to continue their line. She knew he wanted to compete for beta but she had told him to go and find himself a mate. Maybe she should go and retract that and let him do as he wished.
Yes. She'd have to do that when she was free.
Tomorrow we can go and meet my nephew Kalani, if you wish. Until then, if you are finished with your swim, I'll show you the way to my den. She licked the wet fur between the wolf pup's ears and sighed, wishing she were younger. This little one needed wolves to play with and the youngest one with them at the moment was Lewana, who could not be touched by others. Maybe Azmaria or one of the others would indulge themselves in play to rekindle the memories of puphood.
It's not too far from here. Ola continued, stretching her creaking joints as she stood. Follow me. And she loped off through the trees, following a rough path that led towards her den.
The den, as Ola had said, was not far away and it came into view only a minute or so later. It was a large den, with a gaping mouth entrance that dissapeared into darkness. It looked like the type of home a caveman would have lived in all those millenia ago. Now, however, it was Ola's home and she loved it. It was fringed by thorny bushes at either side, forcing approachers to come straight on. At the top of the cavern, embedded into the earth was Darya's skull. It's elongated, whitesnout leered down at whomever entered, those hollow eyes staring endlessly into the abyss. Ola saw Darya's skull as a comfort, as a link to her past. It bothered her less than the scattered mouse and bird bones that littered the entrance.
Please, don't be alarmed to my little bone collection. Past meals and... She pointed her nose to the skull. Past ancestors thats till dwell here to protect us from danger.

"You have a nephew?" Ant nodded, having said what she had more to simply repeat and help herself to process the words than anything. It would be interesting - exciting, even - to meet Ola's nephew, and the pup wagged her tail joyfully at the thought. For a pup like her, despite not quite knowing how to act around other wolves, meeting them was still a wonderful thing to do.
For all her smallness, Ant had little trouble keeping up with Ola. Although her version of a run was still short-strided and bouncy, it covered more ground that would have seemed possible for such a tiny little wolf. She followed a pace or so behind Ola as the black wolf led them to her den. The little pup hadn't quite yet grasped the concept of privacy, though, and it was little wonder that was was already going over the isolation in her head. It was something she accepted, though, and simply wondered about, for that was the nature of the tawny little pup. She simply had to have something to go over in her head at all times. In the absence of that, she would take the simplest things and pick it apart, just to have something to do.
Her thoughts were cut short as the den came into view, and Any now focused on that. She paused to sniff at the bushes on either side of the mouth of the cave and yelped when a thorn attacked her, poking her in the nose. She promptly turned, deciding that the bushes were vicious for a reason, and scrambled after Ola.
So intent was she on leaving the bushes behind that she didn't notice the little bones that were scattered across the entrance until she almost tripped on one. Her eyes widened at the sight of the little bones until Ola's words reassured her. Keeping the assurances in mind as she caught sight of the hollow white skull leering down at her, she crept toward it, tilting her head as she paused before it. Past ancestors? At least it protected.

(Ant is such a cutie! x3)
Her head perked as Ant yelped, her heart almost leaping up into her throat. It eased immediately, however, when she saw it was nothing more than a couple of thorns. Yes, you have to be careful of those, tricky things if you step on one and Darya knows I did that far too often as a pup. She laughed. But don't worry, at this time of year they don't drop very often.
The skull belongs to Darya, my great, great, great, great grandmother. She used to live here too and wanted to remain her even in death. That's why I chsoe it as my home. It seems suitable for a crone, who symbolises such, to live here. She swished her tail as she dissapeared into the jaws of the cave, swallowed up in the darkness.
There's plenty of room. She called as she swung round and lay down with her back to the wall. Make yourself at home. If you wish to explore don't go far. I'll take you to my nephew later on in the day, perhaps. He's a grouchy fellow who looks a lot like me. I needed to talk to him anyway.

((xDD))
Ant merely snuffled, shaking her head curiously back at the thorns at the mention of them. She'd learn to be careful with them, and they wouldn't be a threat to her after that! It wasn't as though the thorn's p***k had hurt terribly, it was simply the surprise of it - who knew bushes were so vicious?
Her gaze landed back on Darya's skull, and she leaned forward slightly to sniff it cautiously. It wouldn't do to disturb the dead in their sleep. Now that she knew whose it had been, Ola's great-great-great-great-grandmother, she no longer thought it a threatening presense. It was simply there, protecting the cave and beyond. That was all she needed to know, and she turned and bounded into the darkness after Ola.
The cave was large and spacey, and Ant had no trouble finding herself a comfortable spot - a hardly noticeable dip in the wall, which became the perfect place for the little pup to curl up, which she did promptly. "I might go exploring later," She said eagerly, her tail beating against the floor.

She smiled and nodded, suddenly very weary. Strange how her age kept catching up with her every now and then. One moment she would feel fine and the next her body would ache and she'd crave sleep. She yawned and settled herself on the earth, cradling her head on her forepaws. Yes a good sleep would do her the world of good.
If you need anything, just wake me. I'll be here until the moon is up, I think. She yawned again and curled her tail around her hindlegs.
The last thing she saw before falling into a restful asleep was Ant's cheerful face, the face that meant hope for the future.
Cerridwen was right after all. Life did go on.
