Emily`s_Gone_Mad Akira Seki Black holes aren't faster than the speed of light. What you are thinking of is the escape velocity from a black hole is faster than the speed of light. That is why light can escape. I thought not even light could escape a black hole?they cant actually. its so dense, light can't escape.

I read once that small particles can escape from a black hole through quantum tunneling, eventually robbing the black hole of its mass and effectively dissolving it. This would take many many billions of years however.

This would take many many billions of years however. I believe that's called the Hawkings Radiation. Basically, matter and antimatter counterparts pop up on the edge of the event horizon all the time (so says the theory). Sometimes, both meet and annihilate each other. Sometimes, both falls back into the black hole. SOMETIMES, however, one falls in and the other flies away into the universe; thus, a particle has escaped from the black hole. It also says that the smaller a black hole is, the more it radiates, and the faster it becomes even smaller. Until the moment when it's a mini BH and literally blow up- destroying itself in a burst of energy/particles.

Going back in time would not be able to be done with the speed of light...besides time travel would require going back behind absolute zero killing any living thing that would go back

SS4 Gogeta Forever here is the real answer no matter what other people say. light is the fastest speed in the universe because light does not travel through time! light only travels through space and since it needs no medium to travel accross it is super super fast. and doesnot require to travel through time because its the fastest thing in the universe. everything travels through both space and time besides light. biggrin That isnt correct, light does travel through time or else we wouldnt be able to measure it. Speed of light through a vacuum (ie space) is =299,792,458 meters per second but when an invisible object is introduced and light passes through it, it would be =124,000 kilometres per second. So light is affected by time and matter.

Dudes. Simple. I read about this, and I know the answer. Just sit back and chill.
When you stand still, time goes at a normal speed. As you approach the speed of light, time goes by slower. If you go at the speed of light, time stops. If you go faster than the speed of light, time will go backwards, but the latter is impossible due to the fact that nothing can go faster than light speed through the fabric of space-time.

zakhiyu Well, it does seem a mystery. At first the relation be speed and time seemed irrelevant to me. However, it is said that all uniform motion was related. But the speed of light always remains the same no matter what their state of uniform linear motion is. Theory states after surpassing the speed of light, or with enough speed, we enter the state of acceleration at uniform speed surpassing the normal speed of time. Eitherway, making a time machine isn't that easy as a living body cannot sustain the pressure at the speed of light. Not much to say... Quote: Hefele and Keating, in 1971, flew cesium atomic clocks east and west around the Earth in commercial airliners, to compare the elapsed time against that of a clock that remained at the US Naval Observatory. Two opposite effects came in to play. The clocks were expected to age more quickly (show a larger elapsed time) than the reference clock, since they were in a higher (weaker) gravitational potential for most of the trip (c.f. Pound, Rebka). But also, contrastingly, the moving clocks were expected to age more slowly because of the speed of their travel. The gravitational effect was the larger, and the clocks suffered a net gain in elapsed time. To within experimental error, the net gain was consistent with the difference between the predicted gravitational gain and the predicted velocity time loss. In 2005, the National Physical Laboratory in the United Kingdom, report their limited replication of this experiment. The NPL experiment differed from the original in that the cesium clocks were sent on a shorter trip (London-Washingon D. C. return), but the clocks were more accurate. If we could create a wormhole, or find a wormhole then it would be possible to go past the speed of light would it not? If we could only reach like what 400mph per say the wormhole throws you threw the entire galaxy at speeds in which aren't even within our reach. However.. to us it seems as if were only going at the 400mph thus traveling at the speed of light

However.. to us it seems as if were only going at the 400mph thus traveling at the speed of light I think your misunderstanding how a worm hole works... think of the universe as a big sheet of paper. Now your on the bottom right corner and you want to go to the top left corner. If you bend the paper so that the two corners are near each other and then create a small bridge between the two points. This bridge is the wormhole, it doesn't allow you to go faster than the speed of light, merely that it connects to very far away points via a relatively short distance.

When one would travel the speed of light, things indeed stand still, but wouldn't you be able to see the light around you? Or would it be traveling alongside you?

I suppose technically you wouldn't be able to see anything behind you only in front of you as the light photons are moving at the same speed as you so therefore they wouldn't be hitting your retinas when you look back only when looking forward towards where your moving and hitting the ones coming towards you.

Think of the Universe as about your computer. It has a limit of its CPU power, so the newest cool games won't work on it too fast. It means the program can perform functions properly, and its speed for game characters will be ok. But for the player (observer) there will be lags, and it consumes more time to watch videoclips or to move avatar from point A to point B. Relative time principle is the same. Less time will pass for the moving thing, more for the one staying on the same place or watching the movement. Moving at the speed of light would make you travel to the end-of-the-world time in a second. What next?
