The hot sun beat down on the town mercilessly. It was definitely late summer, and Eve hated to be outside of her ice-cold apartment-- but the idea of a garden behind the alley in one of the only patches of grass and dirt left had inspired her to work.
A large shovel handle resided in her fist as she wiped the sweat from her brow, getting a dash of dirt on her forehead from her muddy farming gloves. "Oi... get me some water, 'Mew..." she panted, and looked over at him.
He was sitting under a large parasol, the one he had gotten her for her birthday, with a beach towel beneath him and a glass of lemonade beside him. "Water?" he sighed, and mumbled, "just use the hose." Eve scowled momentarily before sticking her shovel back into the ground.
Ovelia, however, was back inside Eve's comfortable apartment being cared for by Nixi. Although Nixi had really lost interest in Ovelia ever since she hatched and began to grow and talk, Ovelia was soon mature enough to sit around quietly when told to do so. When Nixi left the room she would, of course, become very inquisitive and stick her little hands into anything she could reach-- nothing could seem to calm her curiousity.
"WATER!" growled Eve, her tongue feeling like a dried up toad. "Oh fine," drawled 'Mew, and disappeared for a while, only to return with a half-filled water bottle. "It uhm... evaporated," he muttered, and handed the bottle to Eve.
She took a sip, and spit it out. "It's hot! 'Mew, get over here...."

As the shade of the evening slowly began to cool the city, Eve and 'Mew retreated into their nice cold apartment for a night of relaxation. After Eve's shower, she settled onto her nice comfortable couch and flicked the television on. 'Mew and Nixi appeared from the kitchen with a big bowl of popcorn perched perilously upon their backs, trying to balance it. Nalvoro was already beside the couch, batting at a blue ball of yawn, and Ovelia was nestled against Eve's side-- already the size of a small child. Eve took the bowl and murmured her thanks, her hand automatically shovelling popcorn into her mouth.
'Mew poofed onto Eve's head in hat-form and sighed as Eve set the channel on her usual cartoon rubbish that he had become accustomed to.

Dear Journal,
Ovelia and I went to the park today, alone. I decided we needed to spend some time together and perhaps bond more than we already have. She was happy to go outside, and so was I, it was a beautiful day. I've come to realize taking care of this little kid all the time has really made me stop and look around myself. I notice the texture of the clouds, the intensity of the sun, and the hue of the blue sky. Before, all I could think about was my golden treasures. I would give up anything for Ovelia, I really would.
We played on the swings and on the slide. The city park was deserted, so we had all day to do whatever we wanted. However, we tired of it quickly, and... well, Ovelia brought me a dandelion and whispered, "gowd wike you Eve". I have no idea what she said, but it was sweet.
Nalvoro ravaged the tablecloth while I was gone, however.

Dear Journal,
I nearly forgot about Sreas and Atriz! I must remember to hunt them down and see if Sreas hatched... and if so, what he looks like. I'm suddenly curious to compare it and Ovelia. I wonder if they'll become friends. Ovelia herself has matured, and now speaks in intelligent [yet malformed] sentences.
She did trip the other day and get a bruise, but it didn't stop her from tipping the garbage can over-- what a mess. Ah well. Every day is an adventure.

The sun had come up that day, but was scarcely up for long before the melancholy gray clouds came along to dim its light. The day seemed bleak and the sky drizzled a bit as Eve watched from her window, Ovelia snoozing cozily in her arms. She watched as the leaves on the trees across the street blew around like children's tops on a flat surface, whirling and whirling... never stopping. Almost enough to make one dizzy. Soon the gloomy clouds turned a steel color and heavy rain littered the sky.
"I miss you..." sighed Eve, as a lightning bolt pierced the deep blue sky and the thunder rumbled soon after.

Dear Journal,
I'm afraid Ovelia is going to get really hurt one of these days. She wanders off while we're outside on the sidewalk and in the blink of an eye she's meandering into a bulldog's territory. She hasn't gotten badly injured yet; she merely suffers the scrapes and bruises of childhood curiousity.
The world is so big and new to her, though. I suppose I should take her on more trips out of town so she can see it all. I wonder if Nixi and Nalvoro would be okay on their own...

"I wanna go to the park!"
"We just went last week, Ovelia..."
"Picnic!"
'Mew, Nixi, and Nalvoro all perked up at the sound of that. "Pleeease?" whined Nalvoro, his voice sweet and sad like the chirrup of some distant bird.
"How could I say no?" sighed Eve, and she fixed up a picnic basket as Nalvoro and Ovelia tumbled around happily. "Could you get the yellow and white picnic blanket, Nixi?"
Nixi disappeared for a moment down the hall and returned, dragging the blanket from her teeth. Eve took it and folded it up, rolling her eyes a bit, and shoved it through the basket handle. "All ready, guys?" she asked, seemingly cheerful. Ovelia clapped and sprang towards the door like a bullet, her arms out and her little 'wings' flapping.
The way to the park was very short but it involved cutting through some nasty alleyways. Eve had a hard time keeping track of Ovelia and Nalvoro, but luckily Nixi was in the mood to be helpful and kept the two youngin's in line. The park came into sight and Ovelia cheered. The wraught iron jungle gym, the rusty metal slide, the broken seesaw-- it was so beautiful!
Eve set the picnic blanket over the grass and sat down, the grass making a crunching noise beneath her. "All right... I made sandwiches for everyone-- Ovelia gets peanut butter and jelly, Nixi gets ham, Nalvoro-- turkey right--?" she said as she passed out the food. 'Mew hopped down from her head and whisked his tail in front of Eve's face. "Tuna?" he meowed, and Eve set his sandwich down. "Of course!"
Eve had chosen a spot near a huge maple tree with lots of shade-- or.. it would be shaded if there was any sun out. Eve stared up as she took a bite of her salad and realized it was cloudy and ready to rain. She watched, and almost hastily ate her salad. "I think it's gonna rain soon, guys..." she mumbled, but her voice was lost in the crackle and roar of thunder.
With their sandwiches still in their mouths, they picked up their picnic and dodged rain as it pelted the earth and ran all the way home. "What a wonderful day for a picnic!" cried Eve, exasperated, as she unlocked her door and flung herself inside. Nixi, Nalvoro, and 'Mew followed inside and almost automatically shook their fur free of water like dogs. "Gahh!" growled Eve, as she was spattered with more water.
"Ovelia?" asked Nalvoro, as he cocked his head to the side.
Eve stared in disbelief. Then she ran out the door and into the blindingly strong rain.
She backtracked through the alleys and down the sidewalks until she got to the park, but it was so dark she could hardly see. As the buckets of rain poured onto her, she suddenly had the sinking feeling Ovelia had been kidnapped. "Ovelia!" she cried, but no one answered besides the rumble of thunder.
And then a series of lightning bolts lit up the sky-- and the park. Eve scanned the park as quickly as possible, looking for any trace of her precious baby. And she found it. Ovelia was playing in a newly-formed puddle of mud, with a cheery grin on her face. "Mommy!" she called.
Eve didn't know whether to be angered or relieved, so she silently plucked Ovelia from the mud and carried her home... where it was nice and dry and warm.

It was late at night. Nixi and Nalvoro were snoozing on the couch, Eve was in bed dreaming, and 'Mew was beside her on a pillow spasming in his sleep. Ovelia's bright green eyes, however, were glistening as she looked out Eve's window and the streetlamp reflected into her pools of green. She was wide awake.
With the strength of two babies, she crawled out of her crib and meandered up onto Eve's bed. She had suddenly felt trapped by the crib's prison-like bars, and wanted to be nearer to her mother figure.
'Mew awakened as Ovelia curled up next to Eve, and he smiled before going back to sleep.
In the morning, Eve was both surprised and strangely satisfied to see Ovelia next to her, snoring peacefully.

Dear Journal,
It's been over a month and a half since Ovelia came into my life, and yet it seems like she's been here all along. Time sure flies when you're having fun. She's quite the little young lady now and she speaks her mind often. She really is a sweet and gentle creature-- but she just loves to live on the dangerous side of things.
The other day she met a cactus plant. We were strolling through a flower shop and a cactus in full bloom sat in a brown pot on the ground with a caution sign on it. Ovelia could read the sign as well as any child, but she went ahead and grasped the cactus with both chubby little hands. And began to wail.
I told her cacti were sharp, but apparently she had to find it out for herself. She's all better now but I hope she grows out of this curious phase...

"Not so hard," whined Nixi, as Eve ran a brush through her yellow mane. "You'll pull all my fur out..."
"Quit whining," mumbled Eve, "you haven't kept yourself clean so now I have to."
"I'm old enough to think for myself now..." sighed Nixi, but her defense was lost as Nalvoro bounded into the room, barking. "What-- is it, Nalvoro?" sputtered Nixi, as Eve raked through her fur.
Nalvoro rolled onto his back and looked utterly playful. "Can't find ball," he replied, and rolled back over onto his belly. "Seen it?"
Ovelia came prancing into the room, her black hair gleaming after being washed and brushed that morning, carrying a blue ball. She jumped up and down in glee, her little jewelry tinkling. "Ball!"
Eve could foresee this becoming an issue of sharing. She set Nixi's brush down. "Who had the ball first?"
Ovelia and Nalvoro both raised a paw and/or hand. Eve facepalmed.
"Alright, how about this... Ovelia, you get the ball for an hour. Then, Nalvoro gets it for an hour. Then if Ovelia wants the ball again she can get it again. But the ball should go back in the toy chest around 9pm since that's bedtime. In the morning, ball-time will not begin until 10am at the earliest. On Nalvoro or Ovelia's birthday, they will get the ball the entire day. But, if a toy is given up in place of the ball by one party, the other party may take the ball--"
As she was rambling, Ovelia and Nalvoro walked away and began playing with the ball together.
"...My plan went along perfectly," murmured Eve. Nixi smirked. "Nice save."

Dear Journal,
I may seem too old for school, but I'm not. I went back to school today and left Ovelia in Nixi's care. I wasn't worried, she's proven to be the best babysitter I've ever known. However, when I got home, she flung her arms around me like she hadn't seen me in months. It was... nice. To be missed.
I have homework. And essays to write. Novels to read. Equations to decipher. I hope Ovelia won't be too angry at my lack of time...

The alarm went off.
"Battlestations!" cried the man in the navy uniform, and the crowd of eager young man fell into place. The submarine blinked red as the sirens sounded and the enemy vessel drew nearer. "Fire torpedo 1!"
"Firing torpedo 1!"
The submarine was suddenly jolted by an unseen force. "We're going down!"
~~~~
Eve's alarm clock was grumbling with its shrilly little voice. 'Mew was prodding her, not knowing exactly how to shut off the confounded clock. "You're late, I think," he murmured, and hopped off the bed. "Have a nice dream?"
"Yeah..." replied Eve, shaking her head, "We're done playing battleship." Mew raised a brow and shrugged.
"If you say so, commander Eve."
Being late to school always made Eve want to just crawl back into bed and take the absence. However, she was a chronic absentee and she knew she had to conserve them, so, she put up with the humiliating act of walking into class late.
She plopped into her Art Portfolio class seat and let her backpack fall to the ground noisily. The teacher perked a brow before continuing his lecture-- school had just begun, and the art supplies were not in. She would have to wait a few weeks before they did anything fun. She grumbled to herself.
Something, however, felt strange-- maybe it was a stomach ache, or maybe not. But whatever it was made her feel very uneasy. Her mind slowly wandered back to her mysterious little bundle of joy, napping in Nixi's arms. Or, more likely, sticking her fingers into electrical sockets. "Pay attention!" rasped the teacher's voice, and he tapped a long ruler on Eve's desk twice.
Eve jolted upright and exhaled deeply as she realized it was just her teacher. She decided to forget about it and take out her notebook, to get her mind off everything.
Hours later, Eve was walking through the halls to her next class. She felt relieved to be out of steel chair for a couple minutes but being shoved around by others in a hurry was not exactly relaxing. With a muttered curse she was flattened against the window of the school store. Something caught her eye.
"Hello?" she asked the dark, empty room. With an apprehensive step into the door she meandered over a box of candy bars yet to be sold and stepped into a bucket before accidentally slamming the door shut behind her. She stopped, frozen, as the halls thinned out and the bell rang. Something compelled her to move forward-- even if she was cutting a class.
As Eve soon found out, the school store had not been open all summer and was not going to be opened until spring. She looked about the counters and peeked in the shadowy cabinets for whatever it was that was making her break into the store and cut a class-- and soon found it. Behind a glass counter was a pale yellowish egg with a strange symbol on it, that seemed to resemble a rusty imprint. This is what I must've seen from the window, she reasoned, and immediately it reminded her of Ovelia. Except... Ovelia's egg was golden and radiated warmth. This egg seemed to make Eve feel both ill and evil at the same time, and she resented the feeling-- but it pulled her in. She held the egg close and snuck out of the room and down the hall... and out the door to her car.
Breaking in, cutting classes, and now stealing!
Eve didn't care.
Eve drove home, her mind seemingly numb to the consequences of what she'd just done-- detentions followed, and maybe even ... prison time? No no, she thought, I won't get caught. She looked down at the dull, lifeless egg in her lap and pondered what the heck was wrong with her.
They arrived at her small apartment and she leapt up the stairs, leaving her backpack and such in the car. "Eve! You're home early," remarked 'Mew, otherwise known as Mr. State The Obvious.
"I know," she mumbled, and stole off silently into her room. She didn't even bother to check on Ovelia, who saw her enter the house and then her room without even glancing up. She began to wail piteously.
"Shut her up!" came a shout from Eve's room.
However, Ovelia's cries did get through to her. In an instant Eve burst out of the room and scooped Ovelia up into her arms. Her ill-feeling suddenly vanished and she had no desire to go back to the dull old egg. "Welcome home!" Ovelia chirruped, her little voice too cute not to deserve a kiss on the cheek. "I'm so sorry, Ovelia..."
For the rest of the day Eve spent time with Ovelia, inwardly feeling extreme fear and guilt over what she had done at school, and not daring to go back into her room just yet. She knew the egg had something to do with it and she needed to figure out how to stop it.
Dear Journal,
It's been a week or so since I got the new egg. I give it enough attention to consider it "cared" for, but whenever necessary, I leave it alone. I'm a little frightened.
Ovelia has blossomed into a beautiful young girl. I taught her how to read, and now she reads non-stop-- I went and got her a library card, so she can read as much as she pleases. I'm proud of how she's turning out. And to think, she used to be an egg...
