{All kinds of weather, we stick together } Sister Bonding. "Mum?" Pause. Silence. "MUM!" She called again, impatience touching her voice. Someone had gotten water all over her coloring books and she was not the epitome of a happy child at the moment. It was one thing when it was her fault, because that was something she could take care of (and she'd gotten very good at controlling the water that came from HER) - but when someone else did it, she was out for blood.
"Mum's not here." Landon said as he made his way down the stairs, one of the many potted plants that had been placed in his sun room clutched in his hands. The boy had literally shot up like a weed seemingly overnight just a few days ago and had taken it upon himself to be the 'man' of the house - which amused the rain spirit mildly. No skin off her nose, she was older than him even if he was bigger.
"Where is she?" She said with a frown, arms crossing over her chest in a typical Serra pout. Heads were supposed to be rolling for her beloved coloring books being ruined! "And why the plant?" Being the equivalent of a five year old was annoying sometimes. Especially when Little Brother was more like a ten year old and thought he ruled the world.
...Okay, so maybe there was some skin off her nose, but that was natural, right? Right.
"Dunno. Jessica's in the den watching TV. Like usual. Woke up from a nap and Mum was gone."
Serra's face scrunched up. The baby sitter, if one could call her that, always seemed to take advantage of their television. Personally, the rain spirit thought she was a little careless - but she didn't so much mind the freedom as the annoying way the teen thought she was stupid. "Didn't answer about the plant."
"Needs water." He said with a shrug before making his way in the kitchen, "Go play with Nerissa or something, she's fussing."
Grumble, grumble. Stupid big-little brothers. Stupid babysitters. Stupid baby sis--Sigh. Serra shook her head and made her way up the stairs, ignoring the sounds of laughter coming from the den's television set.
"Nerissa?"
The little mermaid lifted her head, tearing her eyes away from the view outside to smile at her sister. Apparently, her version of 'fussy' to Landon was taking over the sun room and not leaving. "Hi."
"So you speak, eh?"
A nod as she relaxed her arms, both tired from attempting to hold her up to the window sill. It had been quite the adventure getting from her room and into the sun room, that was for sure - all in her arms, too, considering her lower half wasn't working yet.
"I know you know more words than 'hi', Neri."
"Don't like." she said with a tilt of her head, "to talk."
Serra rolled her eyes and moved to sit beside the little girl, tugging her into her lap and tickling down the tail, causing the small toddler to giggle and bury her head in her chest, dark curls flopping over her face. "You talk to me!"
"You diffint." The girl muttered, "fwend. Dun wan't talk til can walk."
While the older child didn't quite understand the logic, she could appreciate the want to walk. She'd felt the same frustration and if it hadn't been for her little rain cloud she would have likely been a heck of a lot crabbier than she had been. "You'll walk one day, Nerissa." Serra promised, plopping a kiss to the top of her sister's head. "Well. Slither. You remember The Little Mermaid?"
A nod of her head.
"Well, Ariel got to get legs, remember?"
Another nod of her head, it tilting up to look at her older sister with wide, green eyes.
"Well, maybe that will be you someday, Nerissa. You're just a baby right now, right?" Serra winked at the toddler, "You have a long time."
Nerissa had to think about that for a minute, not quite sure what to make of that. There was no magic witch or anything that could give her legs. Wasn't that how Ariel got hers? And Neri didn't have anything to trade for the ability even if there was! So how was she supposed to get legs? The pensive look on her face remained and she gave a little sigh.
"You don't believe me?"
Neri was silent, not wanting to say that she doubted her big sister. She didn't want to make the older girl mad at her, after all.
"It's okay if you don't. But you'll see! Everyone goes through the 'not walking' time. I did. And I can! And even if you don't have legs, snakes get around. It'll just take practice. Trust me."
Another long silence before the mermaid gave a nod of her head. "Kay."
"You trust me?"
She nodded again and put her small arms around her big sister, hugging onto her.
"Love you, Neri." Serra said with a fond smile.
"You too." Nerissa muttered, closing her eyes. Nap time sounded good right about then.

{Get out meet new friends } A New Friend Dr. Capriotti's small vet clinic was one of your stereotypical sorts. You walk in, there are various plants strewn about - all well taken care of, mind - some seats within the waiting room off to the right, a desk upon initial entry, and a hallway that goes down the center with various rooms on either side. It was nothing extravagant, considering it was something akin to a hole in the wall by anyone's standards. Nevertheless, when it came down to it, the Veterinarian clinic was the best of the best - the main doctor second to none and the nurses were regarded with the utmost respect.
As of the immediate moment, Silvio was stationed in one of the back rooms - tending to a mildly ill dog that was growing rather testy. He needed to get some medication in him and his owners were finding it difficult to do. So, Dr. Capriotti instantly took up the job! Thankfully, his natural magnetic ability towards any and all animals was put to good use and the pup eventually took his medication by way of hiding it within some fish he had for lunch. That was Silvio for you - willing to sacrifice even his meals for his patients! It was even worse because he would likely do the same for his plants. All of them.
Standard attire was worn - lab coat enshrouding what was a business casual button down - tie included - as well as a pair of slacks covering fuzzy, goat legs. Shoes were not worn, simply because it was rather difficult to wear anything but horse shoes upon hooves. Ha ha. Hair was in its usual mop of bedhead, though it managed to remain looking fine - sharp, kind eyes of azure observant and ultimately unquestionable when it came to his intentions. It was why the animals loved him so much - he simply oozed love, adoration, acceptance and understanding. The faun was trusted by those he aided because he would not do much of anything until he actually gained that trust. Once it was gathered, he was capable of doing just about whatever necessary. It made his job infinitely easier, that is for sure. Ohno was being difficult. The African Gray had started to pull out his feathers, leaving a complete mess in Addie's pristine home. She worked hard to keep it clean, especially when she had to take care of Landon - who seriously enjoyed finger painting in any wet substance he could find - and Nerissa who was constantly in a baby wading pool which was situated in the house. Having a pool in the house combined with the already condensation laced cloud that Serra used as a moving vehicle made Addie's job a million times harder without the feathers littering her carpet.
So she'd decided to pack up Nerissa and leave Landon and Serra with the babysitter while she took Ohno to the vet. Handling a child who couldn't move on her own was more than any babysitter could handle when trying to deal with Landon, let alone Serra at the same time.
Dressed casually, in a pretty yellow and blue sundress, Addie carried the cage with her beloved bird in one hand while the mermaid, currently in a pretty orange dress, was situated in a modified baby sling in front of her.
"Neri, stop wriggling," she scolded as she reached out with her free hand to pull the clinic door open, "You're going to hurt yourself."
The small child looked up at her mother with wide, green eyes and blinked a few times, not saying anything - but stilling. She was generally good at understanding, even if she still only said a handful of words.
"Dr. Capriotti's three o' clock." Addie informed the receptionist cheerfully before sitting down to get comfortable.
The receptionist at the front desk was cheery, not at all hardened and grumpy looking like your average. She was a young woman, probably in her mid-twenties and ultimately she was quite happy and chipper compared to the norm. It was likely a nice change considering the fact that usually, receptionists were pricks and bitches. Either way, good service was always something that the Dr. took pride in and he also made sure to take his patients' and their owners' words to heart - the customer always comes first, after all.
Either way, smile remained upon that woman's face as she nodded to Addie. "Just sign in here and take a seat in the waiting room. A nurse will call you back in just a few moments." She explained, only to spot Nerissa and let the smile that was already upon her face grow even more. "Oh! Hello there, sweety." She cooed at the mermaid, not minding the fact that there was...a fish in a baby carrier. Heh. Then again, her boss was a faun..so there was no surprising these folks. Anyways, she smiled and remained the same ole chipper receptionist lady who I officially dub Eleanore. Why? Because I say so.
Anyways, once Addie obliged, signed, and walked into the waiting room, it would be about ten, fifteen minutes more before a nurse came out of the back room and looked at her clipboard. "Ms. Barclay and Ohno?" She inquired, also offering up a smile in their direction. Yep, for a vet clinic this place was all smiles and happy feelings of love and well...happiness. Lawl. Silvio hated frowns and went out of his way to fix whatever problems seemed to arise. Aderyn did, indeed, oblige with the signing in and while she did, Nerissa's head was turned to look at the woman, giving her a little smile before raising a hand and rubbing her eyes. She'd been woken up from a nap so she was a little bit on the cranky, anxious side - which Addie was used to at this point. When the girl turned her head back in and hid it in her mother's bosom, Addie shook her head. "Nerissa's a bit shy," the historian informed the receptionist with a smile of her own.
Once she was situated in the waiting room, fingers were used to stroke through the dark brown hair of her child, blue eyes shifting to look at the bird who was making displeased noises and once more pulling at his feathers. Oy. Thankfully it didn't take very long and when her name was called she pushed herself up and picked up his cage, making her way toward the door.
"That would be me." She said pleasantly.
The receptionist simply let a gentle smile once again appear, nodding to Addie and watching the little girl with a fond expression. So adorable. As they went to sit down, the woman went back to her work, idly humming as she scribbled on some documents - diligently working on her own. As the nurse led Addie, child, and bird back into the bowels of the building, she would pause outside of a room and motion towards it. "Right in here, please." She murmured sweetly, and once they filed into the room she entered and shut the door behind her. "Alright, now, what seems to be the problem with our fine feathered friend, hm?" She inquired gently, sifting through the various papers on her clipboard absently while awaiting Addie's response.
Addie followed the woman into the room, careful not to agitate the girl on her front while simultaneously attempting to keep the cage from swinging and Ohno from talking back to her like he had a tendency to do. Where he picked up such language was beyond her, but it was never really appreciated.
"He's been pulling his feathers out for the last week." Aderyn answered, setting the cage on the exam table while taking a seat in one of the chairs provided, shifting Nerissa so she was more comfortable. She squirmed in response but then settled down.
Oh how she hated the baby contraption. She wanted to walk just like her siblings, darn it!

{Writing My Life Story} Addie's Online Journal Log vi. 07/18/09
Dear Journal,
It's been a long time since I've had the time to sit down and write in this confounded thing. Life has been extremely hectic lately, and I can attribute it to having three children running around and causing quite a ruckus. Serra's grown up into a very respectful young lady. She's been being quite the big sister, helping Nerissa the way she has been. The poor mermaid can't walk, and hasn't gotten the hang of slithering despite the fact that she's been trying so very hard.
So Serra has been playing the good sibling and carting her around. I've offered to do it, of course, but she gives me this look that purely says she can do it. Of course, Neri doesn't really seem to mind. In fact, she clings to Serra more than she clings to me these days - which is good. It occupies Serra's time and keeps her from getting into trouble. Also, it gives me more time to attempt to teach Landon manners. This is an ongoing process, and hasn't quite reached fruition just yet. Sigh. Some days I doubt that it ever will. He's such a wild child...But that's not what this journal entry is supposed to be about.
Nerissa is growing every day. She still barely speaks, though I know she is capable of a few words. One has to wonder why she's so quiet? Aren't mermaids supposed to have beautiful, melodic voices and like to sing? Then again, I only know what is there in lore, and I suppose loving with one I will soon tell whether or not she is able to. After all, she is just a baby and there's not a whole lot babies can do.
At least she seems to have taken an interest in the world around her. At first, when I took her outside, she kind of remained a bit secluded, clinging to her family and ignoring most others. But now as she's getting a bit older, she seems to be looking around a lot more and attempting to at least take an interest in something other than her family unit.
She also seems less dependent on the little kiddie pool that has taken up residence in my living room (and causes quite a mess, let me tell you. I've had to have the carpets cleaned at least four times this month because of mildew.)
...Now I'm talking like Jaime, studying them like this. Ah, Journal, it seems as though Jaime has once again disappeared. Perhaps it's good that he did so now, before I got more attached. And the children, of course.
Ah well. C'est la vie, as they say. It's time for me to get some rest. The children are down for the evening and I'm exhausted. Something about being a mother three times over is over-tiring. Especially when you're doing it alone.
...Though Dr. Capriotti seems to be mildly interested. We shall see.
~Addie

{Untitled } Untitled.
The water in the swimming pool that had been put in during the summer looked so inviting, even with the November winds becoming colder and more violent. Green eyes stared out of the window, small hands pressed against the cold glass which reacted to the tiny girl's warmth, leaving a moist print.
Gone was the wading pool that had invaded the living room when she had first arrived in Addie's life. She had gotten bigger since that and had begun to splash the water more which, in turn, had caused a mold problem. An expensive tear-up-the-carpet mold problem which had Addie pulling, once again, from her family's money to fix. And thus the outdoor pool had been put in.
"Nerissa, get away from the window, you'll catch a cold."
The brunette turned her head, giving a rather displeased look to her mother before returning her gaze outside. The bath tub wasn't the same as the larger area. She couldn't swim in it, for one! Where was the fun in that?
"Nerissa!"
Huff. The small toddler twisted her waist, tail flopping uselessly in front of her before she looked at Addie with a pout. "Water."
"No water. It's freezing outside."
"Water." She demanded once more, pointing toward the window where her handprint was starting to disappear now that heat had been removed.
An exasperated sigh was given and Aderyn moved toward her, picking her up and holding her in her arms. "It'll be spring soon enough, Neri. Then you can go swimming outside again. But until then, you're stuck with the bath, okay?"
The mermaid said nothing, simply resting her head against her mother's chest. She'd find a way to get outside and swim again. Mark her words!

{Untitled } Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.
December was Addie's favorite time of the year. The snow fall had started, coating Gaia in a delicious soft white that was inviting (though a little bit too inviting to her children - one of which could freeze quite literally to death as he was a plant, and the other who could, theoretically, become a ice statue herself) and the aromas and general atmosphere were something that she looked forward to each and every year.
These last three years were the most special that Addie had ever had. Three children to spoil and love and share her joy with. It was something that she would treasure forever. In fact, the hundreds of photographs neatly labeled and put into photo albums that lined her closet shelves which she would look at and remember when she was old and gray were a testament to this fact.
The smell of cinnamon wafted through the house from the small pot on the stove where she was steeping the deep brown sticks of cassia, Christmas music played on the radio and Addie watched contentedly as Serra pushed Nerissa in her small baby swing and Landon behaving for once. He'd been given the special job of unwrapping the Christmas ornaments from their newspaper and bubble wrap. It was "Very Important" and he took it seriously.
"Sleigh bells ring, are you listenin? In the laaane snow is glistenin! A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight, walking in a winter wonderland." Addie's voice came, soft, to the tune sung by Amy Grant.
"In the meadow we can build a snowman!" Serra piped in, "And pretend that he is Parson Brown..." Pause. "Mum? Who's Parson Brown?"
"Parson is a title, like Minister, only they travel. So Parson Brown would be a minister passing by." Addie replied, shifting in her chair and lifting her hot cocoa to her lips.
"Oh. Okay." Seeming satisfied, Serra went back to singing the song as she pushed her sister.
Everything was right in the world. For today, at least.
