Shikoba was surprised at the conditions through which Safi had 'received' his children. He really couldn't imagine how somebody could just leave such a precious thing behind. How did they expect the foal to live?
"That's very surprising. I don't understand how somebody could do that. Unless, of course, something happened to the mother, and she was unable to get to the basket again."
He pondered that idea. How terrifying that must be. To know that another life is in your care, and not being able to take care of it.

Honestly, Safi had never been able to understand what could posess someone to abandon their children, either. Especially after going to all the trouble of putting them in a basket! But such was life, right? There were things that just couldn't be explained...
"Regardless, I see both Saiena and Kileyo as my children, just as if they'd been conceived by me. I raised them, and that has to count for something, right?" And what a raising that had been, from realizing Sai could outrun him with her eyes closed to trying to teach the klutzy Kileyo how to fly. Live and learn, right?
But he was deviating. "Such things you'll get to think about before too long, if your situation works out in your favor. I think you'll find that parenting is much easier in theory than in practice, though!" Which was really the case with everything, right?

Shikoba nodded.
"It does count for something. It counts for a lot. You nurtured a life, and helped it grow. That's something to be immensely proud of."
Shikoba smiled. He was glad he had met Safi up on the hill today. He had learned a lot for him, and now had a lot to think about, and a lot to talk about with Aishwarya when he saw her next.
As he looked to the West, he noticed that the sun was beginning to set. He hadn't realized how much time had gone by during their talk on the high and windy mountain.
"Thank you for all your help, Safi. I really do appreciate it. But I must be going now. Perhaps we'll see each other again some day."
He smiled and bowed his head lightly before turning to the edge of the mountain, and flapping his wings, soaring off into the evening.
