ARMED Forces of the Philippines Chief of staff Efren Abu issued a directive to the entire force to remain neutral amid the political crisis. He called on the soldiers to not meddle in the realm that belongs to politicians and instead keep to their basic duty which is to protect the freedom of the people.
Here is the full text:
1. Once again the Filipino people turn to the Armed Forces of the Philippines with the hope and expectation of relief and stability during these trying times in the political life of our nation. Once again, the Filipino soldier who has sworn to defend with his life our Constitution and sovereignty is made to affirm his sacred covenant to the people. We must not fail our countrymen.
2. The call by various parties for the President to resign in view of alleged wrong doing is now undergoing a Constitutional process that is legal and within the democratic processes our nation lives within. The respect for the freedom of expression is being demonstrated in our streets. It is our duty to ensure that these freedoms are kept alive.
3. The soldier has the duty to protect this political exercise. He is not expected to intervene in it. To do so would betray the trust given to him by the State and would certainly put his understanding of military professionalism in the eyes of the world in doubt. We must not allow that to happen.
4. I am aware of the efforts by some persons, some of them former military, to give a new meaning to what is true professionalism. They are busy enticing some of our personnel to use their units, their office, their uniform, their commission, to express a political preference or meddle in the realm that belongs to politicians. They are convincing some of our men to express their personal opinion in manner that is below the dignity of the soldier of the Armed Forces such as issuing a manifesto or a group opinion. These manifestations do not belong to the soldier. Our duty is simple: to protect our people by preventing those who would coerce them or threaten their freedoms. The outcome of these political developments would be the result of the Filipino peoples collective will, not the soldiers intervention or some officers expression of grievances.
5. Let us reestablish the noble tradition of military professionalism by insulating our officers and men from politics. We owe it to the future generation of our people who seek and dream of seeing a truly respectable Armed Forces.
6. I am asking each commander, at all levels, to clarify our role in the political life of our nation. Commanders should act swiftly against any behavior that challenges or breaks away from the chain of command. Military discipline and military justice will prevail and will not be compromised. The Strength of your leadership is on the line. This is not the time for weakness.

The only reason politicians behave this way is because Filipinos are so quick to dance to their tune.
Tuwing mag-issue ng statement, sayaw naman agad ang Pinoy. Parang mga ulol. Pag may kumanta sayaw agad.
Sayaw Pinoy, sayaw.

It is more interesting to hear what the Junior Officers of the AFP have to say.

This is bullsh*t. dati ang sigaw nila sa Edsa 2 sundalo ng bayan, ngayon ay nanindigan! tuwang-tuwa pa ang mga traydor na service commanders. all smiles pa while on stage. nasa kalgitnaan sila ng pulitika noon. tapos ngayon, biglang may duty na sila not to intervene? how professional.

Si Abu pa tuta ni Gloria.
Precisely as a move by GMA way before pa na alagaan ang mga Generals. Biruin mo ginawang mala-Jollibee ang AFP/PNP. Every six months me bagong hepe? At least marami natuwa sa kanya na ginawa nyang mga hepe. Tapos pag medyo sipsip ka pa after magretire me pwesto ka sa gobyerno. Take note of Angelo Reyes, Ermita, Wycoco. Sino pa ba?
Ngayon at the least when the people are looking at the military to protect the people from this behement of leadership scandal they move in silence. Its a GMA thing. utang na loob nila. So kun ayaw ni amo umalis eh wag na lang ninyo patulan.

wala sa badge o sa pagiging myembro ng AFP mo ang tunay na honor. puso mo at prinsipyo ang magdidikta ng honor na yan.

in fairness to the rank and file of the afp, edsa 2 was nothing but a conspiracy to grab power thanks to the working of angelo reyes and his cabal. to all the patriotic soldiers of the afp, this is the time to redeem the honor of your organization and undo the mess created by your superiors in 2001. your superiors betrayed you in edsa 2 and they were the only ones generously rewarded. you remained in the mountains fighting the battle with inadquate ammunitions and worn out boots. we believe that the greater number of you are noble and patriotic. we believe that just like the rest of us, you desire a new order of things in our society. this is not the time to keep silent or neutral. the situation calls for a collective action from al of us if our nation is to survive. you are the protector of the people and not the illegitimate government of gloria macapagal arroyo.

I appreciate the statement made by Gen. Abu for the AFP to remain nuetral and on the duty of the soldier to protect the political exercise. It does not give Gloria any assurance that the AFP is loyal to her. It is not yet time for the AFP to intervene as the opposition is still in the process of consolidating itself and fine-tuning the transition process. In fact, I disagree with the editorial of the PDI that the crisis has reached a tipping point otherwise all our efforts from now on will be on a downhill. We will come to that tipping point, and I believe that the AFP will once again come in to protect the people and the political exercise and not grab the power for themselves.

wow! nice to hear that the AFP is the protector of the people.
lets ask the detainees. lets ask the political prisoner. lets ask the journalists hiding for their safety lets ask the sakadas and the lumads who survived the horror of militarization
maybe the answer will be different
