An apology? If he hadn't had such good control over his own emotions he might have gawked and a rapid pair of blinks was the only indication that he was surprised. Not one to be on the receiving end of a 'willing' apology on a regular basis, he wasn't entirely sure of how to respond to her words. Granted, he wasn't one to refuse acts of kindness but he just wasn't particularly skilled at handling them when he did get them.

Nevertheless, if that hadn't been enough to surprise him her offer of further company was. He shifted somewhat abruptly as she addressed him for the second time. First a word of gratitude which he assumed was customary and then an invitation? Had he been near a stream he would have taken the opportunity to glance at his own reflection - if only to see if his horns and wings had suddenly dropped off his back like the antlers of a Stag.

He assumed they hadn't.

"I..." Taking a brief second to regather his composure he simply gave a nod and trailed after the mare who appeared to know exactly where she was going. With his mother officially 'awol' he would have to improvise a great deal - perhaps he had been too hasty in attempting to distance the mare off. Just ever so slightly...

"Thank you," He murmured at last.

She hadn't caught the stallions surprised reaction to both her apology and her offer to come along. If she did, she probably would have questioned on if she said something wrong, but since she didn't, she had no worry about it.

She stopped for a moment, turning her head toward him at his thanks. She also was checking to see if he was following after. "You're very welcome. C'mon, it's not that far." With a smile, she turned back around and continued on toward the lake.

Perhaps it wasn't but each step he took further into the lowlands petrified him. Accustomed to the safest and secluded lands he lived in, he was not enjoying the wide open spaces where all might view and scrutinise him. He could only hope that those around were distracted by the mare's beauty as opposed to his own hideous form and thus he would be left to his own devices - perhaps if they were truly distracted he could enjoy himself.

A small smile climbed onto his lips as he allowed this thought to embrace him in an encouraging manner. Yes, they would all be distracted by Ayanna's beauty - his hulking for would be outshone by her petite yet glorious form and he would be safe! As cowardly as it was to hide behind a mare as small as she, in these lands he would not say no to it.

Flicking his wipe like tail against his flank he continued to follow after the mare until the lake came into few and he couldn't help but gawk. While he had seen the lake from a distance he had never dreamed it would look like this. This surface glistened like a jewel and seemed to hold an almost magical quality that couldn't be seen from his home.

...Even the lowlands seemed beautiful - to match the beauty of soquili kind.

"Impressive," He murmured after a few moments, still just behind the mare as she walked, "It looks...different from this place."

Ayanna was still oblivious to the stallions current demeanor about being in the open. Even when she looked back to him, seeing a small smile on his features kept her unaware. She just smiled. "C'mon slowpoke. We'll never get there if you keep that pace up." The mare obviously was jesting, but perhaps it might work in getting him to catch up a little.

When the lake came into view, she stopped and admired the view. It was nice enough, perhaps she'll take a quick dip in the water. Before moving forward again, she heard Azu's words and smiled. "It is. You should see it at night when the moon glitters off the surface." She sighed, remembering that night she stumbled upon that sight. It made her giddy as she then trotted, almost like a skip toward the body of water.

It glittered? Life was full of small surprises or at last the Lowlands were. Azumoth simply raised a brow as Ayanna took the time to inform him of what it could transform in to and then promptly shook his head. Perhaps it did glitter, but he could see that from the slopes provided he turned in the right direction so he would make sure to see for himself at a later date...he had no intention of staying down here.

Nevertheless, as she addressed him as a 'slow poke' he released a small grunt, partly from being indignant towards the remark. Slow? He'd been trying to make sure he didn't over take her! Like his mother he was finding that female soquili were just as hard to understand and their train of thoughts never made sense. He could have sworn he was doing the polite thing by walking more slowly...

Alas if she wanted him to walk more quickly he would...right after he'd watched her skip for a short while. It never ceased to amaze him how happy and content others could be. Breaking into a trot, it wasn't long before the stallion had caught up, his rather extended strides covering a lot of ground rather quickly.

As she trotted towards the lake, getting ever closer, she stumbled a bit trying not to step on a small creature that decided to scurry out the way... seemingly out of no where. After catching herself, she looked back in the direction that it scurried in and shook her head. Even though she was small herself, there were still things smaller than her that she had to be careful about.

As she was looking back, movement from the corner of her eyes caught her attention. Turning her head to see what it was, she smiled when it was the sight of Azu catching up to her. "Now, that wasn't so bad, now was it?" She asked playfully.

It wasn't that much longer until they reached the lake. Once there, she stepped to the water's edge and lowered her head to the surface and started taking a drink from the refreshing liquid.

"My apologies, but most would claim that I was demonstrating an act of chivalry." Azumoth's tone was somewhat dry but unlike previous times it didn't hold any bitterness. Instead, it seemed to have a softer lilt to it, perhaps intended to make the words less harsh. It worked (to his ears at least) and he deemed himself more approachable when using that tone. Maybe if no one was watching he would lighten up a little!

"But it seems that my mother is correct," He paused for a few moments to control his voice, hiding the mirth and the urge to mimic the raccoons accent and tone. "Chivalry in the lowlands, is dead." He confirmed, pausing only briefly to ensure the mare recovered from her stumble...once she had, he moved on once more.

"Rather a shame," He mused, glancing at his own reflection in the water for a few moments before raising a brow at his own appearance. "How do you court anyone without a little chivalry?" He continued, more to himself than anything.

Once getting her fill, she lifted her head and looked back to him. She tilted her head slightly, not understanding how what he was doing was chivalrous. "Act of chivalry? How so? I would have thought it would be nicer if we walked side by side you know?" She asked, giving her tail a slight flick.

As for chivalry being dead around the 'lowlands', as he called them, she shrugged. "If that's what you want to believe I guess. I wouldn't really know yet, haven't met much others besides my herdmates." She added, looking back to the lake and watching the sun glimmer over the surface of it.

Well, he wasn't about to say it out loud but he was fairly certain that it wouldn't be long before the tiny mare was swarmed with budding suitors. She would no doubt enjoy the attention and appreciation for her beauty too - they all did, offer up a compliment and they positively bubbled with pride regardless of the lack of creativity it had!

He really didn't get the lowlands, was he just too old?

"When I was young the idea of allowing a mare to lead the way to begin with was considered polite," Azumoth really felt old as he uttered those words and shook his head as he eyed his own reflection. Alas, he had no grey hairs yet which was a good thing in his eyes, "Only when invited should the stallion consider matching her stride - it is also said that from a vantage point ever so slightly behind the mare...you can see approaching threats."

...Unfortunately he couldn't confirm that one in his own personal experience, it was something his mother had told him.

Nevertheless, her shrug was a little bit of a blow and he pulled a face in response. Apparently he was outdated or he had just stumbled upon a beauty that had only just come into adulthood...either way, she would know soon enough.

"Maybe in time you will appreciate the gesture," He finished at last, his tone somewhat nonplussed.

Something within her told her that she said or did something wrong again. Or was he just that easy to tick off? Nah, she was certain it was the first thing.

She listened to him as he explained his beliefs of politeness when he was younger. When she was smaller, she was always taught to be polite, though her personality didn't always allow it. She could see his stand point though. "I'm sorry. I just thought it would be nice if we could talk face to face."

Turning to him, she smiled, giving her tail a flick. "Perhaps I will."

He was a bit of both really. He could be exceptionally easy to tick off if the right words were used but more often than not he simply misunderstood. He lacked in so many social skills that he often misinterpreted the words and views expressed by another to the point of being a little extreme. It wasn't their fault - it was just something he really ought to work on.

"I did not say we could not talk face to face," He replied after a few moments, fighting the urge to grit his teeth at the misunderstanding. If he grit his teeth, it often looked like he had a sour taste in his mouth or he was contemplating something very, very wrong.

"As I said, I would have caught up eventually...it is just a matter of permitting the mare to lead the way." He was fighting a losing battle and he released a sigh. The more he stayed down in these lands the more h realised how much he really didn't fit in. They thought differently, acted differently...they were just plain strange.

And he was one to talk!

"So, I'm assuming you come here more often than not?" Perhaps a change o subject was in order.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 6:14 pm

"I'm sorry for misunderstanding. Perhaps it doesn't help that we're from two different places?" She gave him a slight shrug. She had to wonder what other differences other horses from different areas might have from her... or was it just him? She highly doubted it. He was pretty normal besides what he looked like, he didn't do anything out of no where or anything of the like.

She sighed softly at his change of subject, looking back into the water before walking to the edge of the water again. "Yeah, I do. It's a great place to come and relax, especially when the others I live with get on my nerves."

"That may be so," the stallion confirmed after a few moments of thought although he suspected it was more to do with age than it was to do with location. Perhaps he was simply too old in comparison to the younger generation who seemed unable to grasp the concepts he had been raised beside. Alas, it was a shame given that such verbal dancing was enjoyable (from the point of view of others)...

Nevertheless, pushing his thoughts to the back of his mind once again, the reference to her potential family made him raise a brow. He had never really been irritated by his own family, they knew how far they could push him and then they would stop. The very thought of having to run away in any manner of speaking confused him given that he had always clung to his family like a life line.

...Lowland soquili were strange. Very strange.

"They irritate you often?" He asked at last.

Ayanna seemed to have been dazed by the water as she stared out into it. She smiled as the surface glistened with the sun's reflection. She had always hoped to catch a fish or two jumping out of the water, but it never happened.

Hearing his question, she seemed to snap out of her 'dream' and glanced to him. "Hmm? Well... no, I just seem to have problems with one of them, she's like a little imp or something. The other two don't like being around her if they didn't have to either." She explained, flicking her tail before adding, "but the other two are dears... really."

The lack of activity from the fish was probably due to the continued presence of a number of soquili in the area. Azumoth had heard a few whispers in terms of the antics of those that lived near by him, including one particular herd's love for fishing. No doubt the fish were hidden deep below the surface for fear of being discovered by these rogue fisher-ponies...unfortunately, Azumoth couldn't confirm this.

Actually, to be entirely honest he never really thought about it! Such things were deemed trivial to him, particularly when he was on his guard.

Nevertheless as she made reference to her family and described them accordingly he couldn't help but purse his lips. An 'imp'? He wasn't entirely sure what this was but it sounded small - a tiny smile flicked onto his lips at this. Honestly, he wasn't certain that anything could get any smaller than the little mare beside him was now!

"You could always discipline her," he offered smoothly as he regained control of his expression and returned it to its placid state. "Perhaps in doing so, you would gain her respect."
