i think ill combine the two,
ive made hime read a little bit of literature so now ill make him think it over very carefuly for three days(short attention span) and if he excepts then ill get him to try and like suck my energies dry with some really obscure ritual that takes like four hours. if he does hes gone!

course, you could just meditate on it or follow your gut instincts on whether or not this is a good idea to teach this guy.

Ah, but does he have the ability. True, being in the right mindset is almost the key to gaining any ability, but does he have the ability to cope with things that might come after him? Meanie-head-things love to pick on learners.

i have him doing the three days of 1 hour meditations right now but at the end ill test him.

well his test is tommorrow im gonna do something along the lines of that fake harm test and see how he does.

hes sure he wants to go through with it now for the test, instead of the harm thing ill try and pull a "kakashi" on him by saying something like my rule isa law and try to get him to make a choice like, If you want to be taught by me then you must first excercise your power by controlling another person if you are not up to the task then you can leave or something to that effect.
