Awesome, guys. Good recon, Bally.

Allegro and Will, your invitations have been sent.

Also, we have been sent an invitation for Alliance with the alliance "Legions." I think they think of it as more of a non aggression pact than anything, but what do you think?

*shrugs* I have one defender, and am not currently planning on building forces in the near future. ... so I'd be of little use if they're looking for troop support. Likewise with tithes. :p

But I've no probs at all with a non-aggression pact. smile

I agree with Ellie. Go for it, if they ask too much, we can always break it off.

NAPs are good. Full out alliances tend to lead to getting dragged into wars, or risking pissing allies off by not wanting to.

Anyone here played Diplomacy?

Thanks, Balc. That's something I needed to know, quite a bit. What types of resources I'm able to pull from an undefended enemy is a big part of what I need to know, as well. I've only got 1/4th those numbers right now, but I can get up to that point quickly. I'm currently all about building up my resource management, and soon I'll be able to hit the ground hard. So we'll see.

Be VERY CAREFUL when dealing with Gauls, I thought he was abandoned (see t7.png), but he wasn't. And IT'S A TRAP! surprised (In order to free trapped troops make sure you do regular attack NOT raid.)

Luckily I had enough men to break through.

Also for a laugh, read the Trapping Tutorial here.
Gaul Peasants
How do the Gaul peasants feel about trapping?
Dad: "Son, I have something to show you. We captured a Clubswinger in this pit we dug."
Son: "Great! Let's kill him!"
Dad: "No, that's not the Gaulish way. We will hold him to break his will to fight us."
Son: "How about we drop a rock on him to break his head? He won't fight us."
Dad: "No, he must sit dejected, abandoned and alone. Well, except for coffee and chocolates his comrades send him. And the magazines. And the Internet connection."
Son: "Couldn't we just take the coffee for ourselves? And drop a rock on him."
Dad: "No, no, no. Our way is to make him wait until the end of time. Or until another one shows up. Or we fill in the pit a little to let him out."
Son: "Come one. We drop a rock, like that one right there. There's space for ten or twenty dead ClubSwingers in the pit. Let's do it! It would be a father-son moment!"
Dad: "No, son. Come, let's dig another pit."

Oi, good to know. eek Thanks.

Anytime. Also, discovering that you steal resources from undefended villages exactly the same doing an attack or a raid option is good to know. The only difference in how those options operate is, as far as I've figured out from reading FAQs, if resistance is encountered. In such a case "attack" will fight it out until one side is the sole victor, and the other side cannot walk away (being utterly demolished), whereas "raid" just lightly skirmishes between the two.

Edit: This just in:

Footage of combat with actually fighting involved. eek

In other news: Clubswingers are suck at defense. If you're going to go away from Travian for extended periods I would recommend calculating how long you'll be away, and find a town enough squares away to send your troops on a raiding mission where they'll return at about the same time you do. That way they won't die a sad death at home.

Alternates include having them "reinforce" an uninhabited oasis somewhere close by, but I think the raid/attack a deserted-and-far-away-town is the better option, as you have the possibility of getting goods for it.

This likely holds true for all tribes, with any unit type whose defense is lower than its offense. Never leave them at home unguarded!

*sends her five phalanxes to raid an unoccupied valley*
*watches the squirrels and sparrows kill all five of her men*
*builds a trapper instead*
It's good to be the Gaul...

Wait? Can you really raid random valleys that aren't inhabited or Oases proper? Did you really lose troops? sad

Though, trapper does sound good. I'm not sure if he goes off before or after fighting. I haven't fought a Gaul with both Phalanxes and traps.

Yes, you can lose troops. I try not to. It's bad for morale. In fact, at this point, it's almost safer to attack enemy villages than to actually fight for an oasis. sweatdrop

However, Teuton towns seem to be easily raidable. For instance:

Bounty :
Wood 106
Clay 106
Iron 107
Wheat 161

Oases give you at most 400 of each resource from a raid. help.travian has the animal defence values there. The animals respawn. Personally, I'm leaving it until I have a Hero Mansion and so on.

I can get by on about 5-6 raids a day on abandoned cities around me. I'm fine with that. It ends up gaining me more, in the end. The problem is they tend to end up being deleted.

Either way, after a day of raiding I have a brand new Lvl 2 barracks and a few more macemen. I'm going for axemen, if it's possible. That, and all of my resources are now level 2, if not 3.
