Could we live on another Planet?
  Yes! Aboslutley!
  No! Impossible!
Not enough to decide on for me.

Of course there is the possibility of it having non carbon based life. Now wouldn't that be interesting. Though as far as I know it's impossible, it's fun to dream isn't it. xp

Thats right! On the news, just this morn, On the news they announced theres almost an EXSACT duplicate Earth.
It has breathable air, liveable land, and all.
Just one catch.
It goes through a whole years seasons in 13 days!
Thats right!
I belive this would difficult growing of crops and such.
But they could build weather-controled domes like here in gurney.
What are your thoughts on this?
Do you have any sourses?
Please post and discuss!
They did say it is a possiblity that humans can live there...
so what are your thoughts on people going to this "New Earth"?
Do you believe what I think?
I believe,
This will cause many upper-class people, to purchase land on the new planet. Celebertys and overall rich people. Leaving us to just sit on this world, dying from other threats alrady disscused.
So tell me,
Would you go?
Should we go?
How should we manage this?
and even,
Is there other life on the planet already?
Not much was said on the news, so what are your theorys?

If we go to this, "new Earth", we'll just screw it up like we did on this planet. And forsake the thing about controlling the weather. So far, it seems impossible, and it just might be.

Celebrities would not have nearly as much money as it would cost to go to this planet and buy land. Maybe Bill Gates can, but unless you got more then several billion dollars, which most celebrities don't have, barely anyone would be able to pay the cost for going to this place and buying land.

I'd rather just leave it the way it is, untouched, unless this planet becomes so horrid and unlivable that we have to move the 6.5 billion people on Earth to the new Earth.

I think, If we found a similar planet to the earth, would pass several years of study and planning before we step the planet; a new planet also means new bacterium and new virus and illnesses; it is for that reason we can find a planet with vegetation and oxygen, but the most probable thing is that we cannot live there.

Yeah!!!!!!!! mrgreen
It is sooooooooooo coooooooooooolllllllllll - - of course we are not likely to be the ones to inhabit it - but doesn't it just boggle the mind???? Another planet like ours - so if there is reincarnation - could we be living our next life on a different solar system??? rofl rofl

All this stuff but I haven't heard anyone breathe one word about radiation. Europa is bathed in the stuff, we couldn't live there because we'd all fry. It's the same problem people would have going to Mars. There would be a lot of exposure without the Earth's magnetic field to protect us from gamma radiation.

We simply can't get to other planets without being slightly cooked with our current technology.

You are right, for that reason I say that if we found a similar planet we would pass years with only studying the planet to know if it is safe, would be brilliant that we built robot scanners to analyze planets and other things 3nodding .

Whoo, that's a tough one. Remember the Mars probe that overshot because they couldn't be bothered to convert from english units to metric (though why were they using english units in the first place?)?

I've seen too many of these things go wrong to have a lot of faith in them right now =D

There is a chance of life on other planets...
and do you wonder if there is life on another planet....are they thinking the exact same thing we are??
hmmm....really makes you think XD
Well if there is then we are sure to find it some day....just wonder what day that will be....

Gotta get myself into it.
Gotta get myself into it.
Gotta get myself into it.

No such thing as "english units" exist.

Unless you mean imperial.

Why not help me do it?

It is either called English or Imperial units, as part of the English or Imperial system.

Um....as of wether we should go or not. No. Not now, maybe in the near future.

Everyone's screaming YES GO THE WORLD'S GOING TO BURN!!!! burning_eyes

It's not.

But this is not the place to disscus global warming and my opions on it, so...I won't.

All I'm getting to is that we shouldn't go because of the way we are "behaving" now. As soon as we get our heads "from the gutter" so to speak, clean up this rat hole of a society we live in, and get useful. Then we should go. Not now, and probably not even in the near future now that I think about it.

I read a book once called Rare Earth by Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee (I just looked it up on Amazon.com). The book made a fascinating point about how difficult it truly is to find a planet hospitible to any kind of complex life. Single celled organisms are much hardier and may very well be common in the universe. It has been several years since I read the book, but it pointed out several features of earth, and the entire solar system, that are neceesary for our existence. Beyond the obvious need for the right distance from the sun, liquid water, and oxygen atmosphere, a few less expected necessities are:

Crustal Plates: Earth is the only planet in our solar system with active plate tectonics. These plates might cause destructive earthquakes and volcanoes, but they are absolutely vital to circulating the materials of life from the earth's crust and mantle into the biosphere. Otherwise all our biomass would be sitting as sediment on the ocean floor.

Molten Core: Earth's molten core of iron and nickel generate our planet's substantial magnetic field. Without this magnetic protection cosmic rays would chew up our DNA before you know it. In turn the maintanence of a molten core requires relatively large concentrations of radioactive materials to generate heat within the earth. Uranium isn't the most plentiful stuff in the universe.

The Moon: The moon stabilizes earth's rotaional axis. Without the moon the earth would wobble much more on its axis, playing havoc with the weather (nevermind carbon dioxide emissions). The moon is getting farther away, which both slows down the earth lenghtening our days, and relaxing the stabilizing forces on our axis. Don't get alarmed though - the sun may very well explode before this kills us all.

Jupiter: The king of the ancient gods protects us now just as much today as in the past. All throughout the history of the solar system this gravitational behemoth has swallowed up the vast majority of pesky comets and asteroids that might otherwise have had "Mass Extinction: Earth or Bust" stamped across them. Still even the mighty Jupiter isn't perfect - let's say Dinosaurs.

In theory I think there might be other planets like ours out there, but we live on a Rare Earth, just as the book I mentioned states, so I'm not going to hold my breath that this new planet is one of them.

Actually, and I forget where I read this, but I think there is a strong possibility that this planet actualy has tectonic forces, I forget the site and the exacts of it as I was just kinda skimming the article before my dad kicked me off my comp. rolleyes

Another thing you would need for life is, energy.
On our planet it was probably because of lightning that the first Simple organic molecules such as amino acids and nucleic acids came into existance. And we have done this in the lab back in, I think, 1954-ish time range I believe. Otherwise for life all you really need are the elemnts Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen(not alone, it can be in a compound that becomes broken and then re assembled by some form of energy.) Nitrogen and some Phosphorus. And then any kind of stable enviornment with shelter from massive amounts of radiation, but even then we have evidence of life living through that.

So as SirKabance has said, for more complex life we just need a more stable predictable enviornment. I believe if there is one place that we know of that there can be complex life, it is Europa. This seemingly frozen moon shows evidence of a molten core, and possible tectonic activity. Even though the first few miles or so of it's surface is Ice, there may be water deeper down thanks to possible volcanic activity to melt the Ice, making for a suitable plcae for life with water and what ever other minerals and such spew out of a volcano. Plus the heat would provide for a place with easy access to energy for Chemosynthetic organisms. The only problem I see with this though is that I don't know what kind of energy would be down there that is strong enough to break apart and re-assemble compounds with CHONP in them into Organic molecules. Perhaps it may have happened before Europa totally formed?

I think it'd be cool though if there is advanced life on this new planet, and since it's only 20 light years away maybe we'd be in somewhat easy communication range. Maybe I'll get lucky and we will have made contact with them before I die. mrgreen
