It's no longer in print and there's a high demand on it. Though I think that's why it went out of print.

Sort of off-topic, but there's a little kid's book I discovered called "Bantam of the Opera", in which a rooster is essentially the Phantom. And by kid's I mean toddlers/preschooler level.

Back on topic, I love Susan Kay, but the original novel is the ultimate winner in my... erm... book. sweatdrop

eek Wow. Hardcover. Susan Kay. Must. Have *grabgrab*.

Yes, yes, I already own The Essential Phantom of the Opera. But...but...I want the hardcover too! And I really hope that the Susan Kay one is really getting reprinted, so I can finally read the damn thing. I got it held for me from the library, but two are massively overdue and the one I reserved has been "In transit to shelf" for about a month now. Grr.

Oh my god, I can be the same way. It irks me to no end when the corner of the dustjacket is bent over, or when people dog ear the pages. I made my mom promise not to dog ear the pages of the new Harry Potter book when I gave it to her.

And, yeah, I only borrow books from the library when I need it for book club, and I don't particularly want to buy it. They tend to be all messed up and some of them even smell funky. It's kinda...disturbing in a way.

Indeed! I went to borrow the Leurox book from the library at school for my project so I could wait for the hardcover... but it was literally falling apart! It was such an old, ancient copy that I feared for it's like with me! Books get lost and damaged in my backpack, hense why none of MY books ever go in there!
When I did take my Phantom book to school.. it was in a bloody ziplock bag for protection! I also put my notebook in there for taking notes and used the excuse that the bag was only to keep the books together and stuff sweatdrop I'm a neard sweatdrop

Well, I love the Original as everyone else does but it's the only one I've read crying . My next one to read will be the Kay novel then Angel of Music: Tales of PotO and THEN The Phantom Cat of the Opera. Mostly because I'm obsessed with the Broadway Musical Cats right now and Cats and Phantom combined(sorta anyway) would rock! biggrin

Okay, I have a little discussion to bring up that a PotO forum I joined just last week brought up. And while I'd love to make a seperate topic just to get a better discussion going, I'm going to obey the rules.

The quotes I make are from people on said forum.

PHANTOM by Susan Kay; Is It Possible To Hate It?

Quote:
So far, everyone I have talked to on every forum I visit loves Kay. Expecting the best, I rented it at the libary...I am three-fourths finished with it, and this is what I think so far...

The beginning was very well written and often brought me to tears; it led me to think it was going to get better, but as it merged into Rome it started to lose my attention. By the time it got to Persia, Erik was actually beginning to bug me...yes, you read that right.
Nadir is my favorite character by far in this novel. I have always loved loved loved him and I still love him in Kay. But Erik seems cocky to me, and strangely innocent, or just plain weird. Also the dirty jokes and vulgar language bothered me. One would not have never sworn like that, that much, in those days. Erik saying "f___ your customs" had me giving dry looks, and his joke about "whether a small jar could hold me..." Erik is not the kind of person to say that, especially the Leroux Erik. Especially in the mid 1800s. (And another thing...why is he joking about whether his jumblies would be able to fit inside a small jar when he was almost raped and was terrified to sleep inside another man's house?! ) I know Erik was on drugs a lot, but soon I couldn't help but wonder if he had been high the entire time...

I do not think Kay did a fantastic job of writing Erik. He got on my nerves after a while, whereas, in the beginning, I was beginning to anticipate his death at the end of the novel with sadness, but in Persia, frankly, I didn't care if he died or not.
I was also annoyed that Erik's mind seemed to constantly be on DEATH DEATH DEATH! He always seems to be invisioning himself strangling someone, and the Leroux Erik, even though he was never written from his point of view, never seemed that murderous. Kay's Erik comes across as vulgar, harsh, unpredictable, irritating and only sometimes pitiful. Sorry again.

And Erik teaming up with Garnier? Way too bizarre for my taste.

I also noticed that Kay seems to make some strong points, but then she contradicts them later on.

So far, the book has been so so for me. I enjoyed the beginning and I do like most of the writing, but it has not been holding my interest for long. I have never liked any published fanfic, and a good many of the original fanfics I read on other Phantom sites blow the published works out of the water.

But I feel bad because everyone I know loves it, and they give me strange "looks" or responses to my review...did anyone else dislike Kay as I do?

While I do not agree wholeheartedly with the person who started this topic (the quote above) I have to agree that there are some points in the book that I was not pleased with/annoyed me/did not capture my imagination.

A lot of things that occurred in the book would not have happened back then because of manners and laws and such.

Quote:
Yes, to me it sounded almost like she saw the play, instantly read the book, had a big big crush on Erik, and decided to stun the world...eh. o_O I'm worried how she's going to merge Leroux in here now. Her Erik is scaring me.

Quote:
Hmm---let me think about this. Gaston Leroux's novel is either in the Classical section of the bookstore, or fiction under mystery. Susan Kay's book is under Romance. The moment I read the lines (roughly, so please no shooting me for not being exact---I don't have the book any more) "No woman who hears him will die in grace" I pretty much got the idea that this would be in no way related to the type of writing predominanty Leroux. I'm not a purist in any extremes, but its a romance, pure and simple. And a fanasy romance at that. There is very little realism to it. If Erik was as seductive, eveni his hideousness, as Kay depicted, Raoul would have lost Christine on day one. So, I have to agree with Hyena. It's loose phan phiction where the writer probably got a crush, satisfied it, and went on.

I do think Kay is a good writer though, and I think she depicted hers (and many others) fantasies well. But it is simply that, and that is how I see it. As long as I read it removing myself from the original or even considering that it had anything to do with the original, I'm fine with it. Otherwise, when viewing it in context with Leroux---yes, I loath it because it simply cannot compare. It disapoints and annoys.

So, I just want to bring up a point. Does anyone else dislike it or hate it? While a lot of people here love it (myself included) I just wondered if the people against it are hiding or lying to avoid conflict.

Please, do discuss this thoroughly.

I actually noticed a bit of Erik's sort of out-of-character personality in the little I've read of Susan Kay's novel. But that just might be personal predjudice. He seems to be a bit spoiled, even though he's not. I can't see him throwing tantrums like that. Don't get me wrong--I love what I've read so far. I just disagree with some points. And don't even get me started on him using morphine. That just...annoys me. And I could do without Erik getting Christine pregnant. It just seems unrealistic to me.

(Just got the book from the library, after what felt like forever.)

Well Alexis, as some of the members on the forum brought up, his personality annoyed them because he constantly makes witty comments or constantly thinks on death, or simply sounds cynical. I myself did not mind his personality because I do my share of dry wit, cynacism and sarcasm to the point where people roll their eyes at me.

I already mentioned the drug use in the thread about the book''s reprinting, but I shall say it again. Erik was introduced to the drug opium which is much like Marijuana and was quite common and legal back in Persia and the middle east. You had to inhale the drug through a pipe (almost like pipe tobacco) and the effects would start.

Erik says in the book that he switched to morphine, which is injected into the bloodstream via needle, for fear of damaging his voice.

The fact alone that he was using drugs did not entirely appeal to me at first, but I disgress. Drugs were as common as wealthy men having mistresses back then. Though it is an expensive habit, which made me wonder how Erik did not become entirely poor from it aside from gaining his twenty thousand francs (but that was later) as a salary and whatever money he had left over from working for the shah of Persia.

It is not a wonder that he was a user. His life was terrible (whether you go by Kay''s vision or not) and anyone would scramble for a momentary escape however they could.

On the subject of Christine''s pregnancy, oh yes it was very unlikely and stupid of Kay to put it in, however much I liked the ending. But she also has Christine secretly in love with Erik despite her fear. Which again, is not entirely right if she was sticking to Leroux''s version. But as I quoted someone else saying, she must''ve taken ALW''s version and Leroux''s and stirred it together to get her own romantic idealism.

But I must say for the end that I was pleased with how she represented Raoul. He was not vain nor an a*****e. He was kind and every bit of his personality that was given to him by Kay was the way he should be. Certainly no one could gather from her representation of him that he was a "fop".
