Kiv missed his brother's amusement, so intent was he on proving himself. The cub reached the shallows, scrambled up the bank, and was JUST about to shake himself off when --
"UGH!"
Bright laughter bubbled out of him as the mud and water from Shin's coat splattered him. Not paying attention, the cub slipped and rolled on the bank - his coat went from black and white to brown in an instant. Grinning, he climbed to his feet scooped up a pawful of mud.
"That's okay, I LIKE the dirt!"
Kivuli giggled and flung his missle, aiming for his brother's white face.

"Don't even think--"
Too late, the projectile had already reached it's mark, splattering against his neck and muzzle. He snorted, pawing at his nose to wipe away the soft earth, shaking his head vigorously to fling away what was left. Bleh, there was mud in his mouth and he spat to rid himself of the taste.
He thought of throwing his own pawful of mud at his brother, turn about was fair play after all. But he thought better of it, knowing that somehow Kiv would end up crying and then -he'd- be the one in trouble for it, not that he wasn't going to be blamed for the muddy little ball of fur anyways.
"Oh that's it, you're going to get it now."
Bounding along the bank, Shin lowered his head to catch his brother's scruff in his jaws. Let's see how the little runt liked a dunk in the water now.

The moment the mud left his paws, the cub was scrambling up the banks. Paws dug in and slithered on the wet surface. Panting, Kivuli managed to get one paw on the grass. Almost... there! He knew what was coming, and would do his best to get out of range. Surely he was fast enough to get away while Shin was --
-- A undignified squeak slipped out of his mouth as he felt his paws leave the ground.
Oop. Guess not...
"NONONO!" Kivuli shrieked and splayed his limbs, caught halfway between indignant irritation and laughter. His tail whipped wildly in an effort to gain some sort of balance. "NO FAIR! NO FAIR!"
... in a sudden flash of inspiration, the cub flicked his tail upwards in an attempt to transfer mud from the red tuft to his brother's white cheeks.

Shin snorted, ignoring the fresh mud that pelted his hide, despite his new found irritation. Cubs.... Well if his brother wanted to act like a brat, than Shin would treat him like one.
Turning on his heals, Shin trod straight back to the water's edge. Standing on the shore, head held upright, he unceremoniously dropped the cub into the cold water.
"Chill out."
Silently he watched for his brother to emerge from the water again, limbs poised to catch the cub again if need be, or rescue the sleepy little fluffball if he decided to play it that way. Maybe it was time for that nap afterall...

The cold water hit him like a stone between the eyes, but he wasn't about to be altered from his course. Air was fresh in his blood, and his indignant anger burned stronger than his lungs.
He could stay here as looooong as it took.
Silver eyes popped open and took in the mud-clouded blue world around him. Bubbles escaped from his clamped jaws and took glittering paths towards the sun that beamed down. He watched them with cheeks puffed out and eyes narrowed.
Just beyond the watery surface he could see his brother's golden gaze peering down at him. Hmph! Kivuli would sure show him! Toss THIS cub in the water like a piece of meat and you'll be sorry!
... his legs began to tingle, his vision blurring and fading. How strange...

Shaking his head, his chest heaved with a deep sigh. Of course Kiv was going to play that way, why had he expected anything less? He may have thought for a moment of leaving the cub there, let him throw his little tantrum and find out the hard way that it wouldn't work, that is he would have thought of it were they both on dry land.
But Kivuli was his brother, and annoyed though he was, Shin was not about to let him, or any living creature for that matter, drown. With another sigh, Shin stepped into the water again, jaws plunged below the surface to snatch his brother from beneath.
He would carry his brother home for that much needed nap, whether the cub liked it or not. Of course as the older brother, this was all going to be his fault, and he'd be the one who ended up in trouble when the runt told the story, despite what Shin may say to the contrary. But at least the mud had been washed off, one less thing for him to be yelled at.
Cubs... How could one go from a playful ball of fluff to an irritating brat in such a brief instant? How was it possible for a simple game to turn to a fight in less than a blink? Surely he hadn't been like this with their parents as a cub? Or had he? Well, at least he was never having cubs...ever.
