Just depends on the situation, really. If you have a lot of 3 drops in your opening hand along with Lotus, you can fuel something pretty nasty.

Example: Drop Lotus, sac for RRR, Ball Lightning, 6 to your opponent's head right there!

Example 2: Lotus, sac for BBB, drop Hypnotic Specter. They better hope they have a Shock or Lightning Bolt!

Of course, like any other artifact, it's vulnerable to any artifact destruction. 3nodding

Black Lotus isn't the most powerful card in the game, but it is considered the most valuable.

Saying that Black Lotus is the best card in Magic is like saying that Swamps or Islands (or any other basic land type) is the best card.
It only produces mana, you need something to do with that mana.
For me is a good utility card. Nothing more

The card is crazy wicked. It's what allows most of the type 1 decks to work in the way they do (well it and the moxen). I play mean-deck-tendrils and aside from dark ritual BL is one of my mail spoils targets. It basically enables storm combo, GRO and stax and allows them to go nuts.

Black lotus is an amazing card, but it's not the best. But, it combines with some of the best to make things amazing.

I don't think I seen anyone post this combo in here. So, if not, here it is.

1st turn.

Black Lotus; sac. for two green and a red.
Land - Mountain; play it.
Lightning bolt; now you're opponent is at 17 life.
Channel; sac. 17 life for 17 colorless mana.
Fireball ( I believe that's what was used alot with this ); deal 17 damage to that player and you win the game.

That's one the major reasons why some of these were restricted, direct damage for a win.

just so people know what we're talking about:

This is NOT the most powerful card in magic, and never will be. It does NOTHING on it's own.

Secondly, Black Lotus can also not be considered the most powerful card, it ALSO does nothing on it's own.

In fact, the entire discussion of what is the most powerful is pointless rhetoric, you need cards to work together in order to have an effect, and thats why this game is great in the first place, because of the nearly infinite varieties you can generate. look at Flash Hulk. for a brief little while it was the most devastating thing anyone had done in ages, now it's just one of any dozen "combo" decks.

Please, remember what this thread is about, what is Best, not the most powerful.

My answer is that the lotus is NOT the best card, Opening hand it's a great thing to see, and can set you on a pace that ideally overruns your opponent, but the rest of the deck needs to keep up.

I will say that the lotus combines the best of power, playability and RARITY though, and THAT is why it is worth so much.

this card is only the best card to a collector, not a true player, for a true player knows that the best card....depends on your deck, and therefore varries with each player, deck, and style of playing......
