The beaver blinked and almost choked on a last forkful of fish. Lemurs? Where did they come from? Did she know a lemur? No...she didn't think so. But hey, stranger things had happened on this island.
"Congratulations," she told him. And meant it...it was wonderful to find love even in such a mess. Or at least someone to be ah...friends with.

"Congradulations?" He grunted, smile wavering slightly before growing a bit to make up for the moment's hesitation. "Wha', y't'ink in a pile o' freaks I aint go' a shot a' nothin'?" His voice was more bitter than he had intended, his skin blotching from grayish blue to a pinker rust color. "Go feckin' chew a log, y'fat b***h."

Chana sighed. And they'd been having such a nice conversation...ah well. Clearly she wasn't going to get much else out of him today. She certainly didn't feel like spending the time trying to talk him into a better mood.
"Perhaps I will," she replied as she stood up to return her dish and silverware.

He watched her get up with a grunt, frowning further, "Hoy, s'jes' a joke, learn t'lighten up a bit!" Ah yes, he was beginning to remember days when she had been more human shaped but just as furry, and their meeting had gone about the same. Ah well, no skin off his beak. Not that his beak had any skin, but that was beside the point. It seemed lunch was over, and so he pulled his books back into his lap with a disgruntled cooing noise in the back of his throat. She didn't want to offer help? Fine, he didn't need to request it.

She turned towards the door. "A joke, hmmm? Maybe you should learn to make them funnier."
Lunch was definitely over, and the beaver had left the building.
