"Josef, ma'am," he said, gulping. The boy shuffled forward a little at her invitation, though his eyes were still wide open and darting looks almost everywhere but the woman herself. He fiddled with his hat for a moment. "Umm. You see... I was wondering..." He struggled to get the words out, nervous that she would get impatient and snap a him. "Will you teach me?" he finally blurted. Josef blushed and looked down at his feet for a second, then back up at her with a hopeful look in his eye. "Please?"

Jarrick opened his mouth to say something moderately intelligent back, but he stopped short as he caught sight of Carilee practically stalking her way towards the counter. At least she didn't seem to have a sword on her yet, he thought wryly, though granted the book she was still dragging around was probably just as dangerous, considering it was she who held it. Probably more. He smiled a little and looked back at Colby. "That's the girl I was talking about. Looks like she hasn't got the sword she was after yet. The world's probably better for it."

As he finished speaking, he saw another girl, his height if not taller, had entered the shop and was conversing with a boy who seemed to have followed soon after.

Keldan sighed as she walked down one of Breckenhollow's fine streets. People were starting to pay her less, and she was getting bored of the locals. Plus, the barkeep where she did her nightly gigs was beginning to suspect she wasn't paying him the proper percentage of her earnings like they agreed.

She wasn't paying him enough, of course, but that was beside the point. It was time to move to another town.

That meant she had to pick up some more supplies, which was bothersome.

In addition, Keldan had heard rumors of an increase of bandits and thieves. Normally, she wouldn't be too concerned, as bards were hardly ever targeted for robbery, but now that she actually had some cash, the threat seemed a little more daunting. Besides, a fine female figure such as herself (she preened) would obviously be the target of thugs.

Thus, Keldan set out to get a weapon. A sword, she mused, or something else that seemed threatening. It didn't matter if she didn't know how to use it, just so long as other people could see it was there. A large sword strikes fear into the hearts of bandits much better than a small knife (though both could strike their literal hearts).

And so she headed to Hock's shop, since he would have an appropriate (and hopefully cheap) sword/intimidating weapon.

It was a relief to enter the cool store. Kel took a moment to breath in the crisp air, a sharp contrast to the warmer weather outside. She then started to examine the Hock's wares as she wandered the aisles. Most of them were familiar, as she spent quite a few hot afternoons amusing herself in Hock's comfortably cool store.

She finally weaved her way through the various people in the store and lounged on the main counter, waiting for Hock to finish addressing the girl who was also at the counter.

Josef . . . Noru quickly tucked the name into her head. She was never really good with names. Faces perhaps, but never names. Looking over at him after glancing at a dagger, she noticed that he was still a little hesitant. His eyes darted everywhere, as if he were frightened of her. She wanted to sigh but refused to. It seemed that she was too intimidating. At that thought, she would've laughed, but . . . was afraid to frighten the boy.

He took his time around the matter, and Noru was about to lose her patience when he blurted it out. For the second time that day, she stood dumbly and blinked. She wasn't one to stay in one place for long. Her travels brought her to random places, and almost always she was getting into trouble one way or another. If she were to drag a young child along . . . her responsibilities would not only fall on herself, but for the boy too. And that would mean she would have to be less careful, less reckless. Not to mention . . . her thoughts suddenly fell to his parents. Immediately, she was reluctant.

Realizing that she hadn't said anything, she looked the boy up and down. He seemed as if he could be determined enough to learn, but . . . she didn't want to thrust someone into her lifestyle. Not to mention all the brawls. With a sigh, she looked down at him. "I don't live here, and I don't plan on staying for long. If you hadn't noticed, I tend to get into a lot of trouble. I'm reckless, and tempermental. That doesn't do well for a good teacher or a traveling companion. So think about what you're asking. Not to mention . . . where are your parents? Wouldn't they be worried if you just up and left?" She raised an eyebrow at him and crossed her arms over her chest, tapping one foot against the wooden floor.

((Name change: Josef -> Miley, 'less someone's got a better suggestion. ))

Miley's face fell. His mom would never let him do anything really fun like that. She'd even told him he couldn't play with the Carsenick boys anymore, not that he'd listened. If he told her about the amazing sword woman, she probably wouldn't even believe him, much less let him do it.

Miley resolved to take matters into his own hands. He stood up straighter and puffed out his chest a little like he'd seen some of the older men do. "I have no family," he declared. And he could handle a bit of trouble, too. He was good at slipping into the background whenever things around him got a little rowdy. Not that he would be running away like that now, though. If the lady would teach him, he could learn to stand and fight like the best of them.

Noru raised her eyebrow further - if that was even possible - when the boy stood up straight and took on a smug pose. One he surely picked off of other swaggering men. She noticed that earlier his face had fallen, especially when he mentioned the parents. Yet his resolve afterwards made her think about whatever decision she would make once more.

"I see, I see." She stated at his declaration of lacking a family. He seemed persistant. If not a little eager. Yet, Noru was almost certain that part of his statement was a lie. However, she didn't say anything. For a moment, she turned around to peer at the shelving beside her and examined a light, simplistic practice blade made out of sturdy metal. Thinking for a moment, she finally said, blandly," And do you have anything to fight with, other than those two hands of yours there?" It was a simple question, and had no tone other than one of curious interest.

Colby looked in the direction that Jarrick had told her, and saw the girl. Her clothing seemed a bit too large for her. With her attention drifting around the store, Colby could hear a faint discussion and she turned her head in that direction. There was a young boy and a lady; well Colby assumed she was a lady. It was a bit difficult to tell with her clothes and hat. She seemed older than Colby, and taller than Jarrick. The woman was rather impressive, considering the huge sword on her back wasn’t throwing her off balance.

"Umm." Miley chewed his lip for a moment. Then his eyes lit up. "I have my slingshot! Not that it's cool like a sword or anything." That was something, at least. He was pretty good with it too, after all those afternoons he and Drail'd spent messing around.

A slingshot wasn't nearly as good as a sword though. Miley felt deficient. Maybe the sword lady wasn't going to teach him swords if he didn't even have one. The one she had looked too big for him, after all. Miley's fingers were busy fiddling with each other behind his back as he waited for her answer.

Hock, meanwhile, glanced at the new woman who'd approached, then turned back to the girl in front of him. "I'll look in the back for it. But no promises." He raised his voice to address the store as a whole. "I'm setting the locks while I'm in the back, so none of you will be able to leave for a few minutes." He didn't pause to allow anyone to argue with him before hitting some kind of trigger just below the counter and then shuffling off into the back.

Carilee, a rather satisfied look on her face, turned around and briefly registered that another woman had approached the counter. Interesting. The boy who had directed her earlier was also off to her left. He appeared to be having a mildly awkward conversation with a female. Intriguing. She drifted nearer. They didn't seem to be saying much, so she interrupted. If you could call it that... "Nice sword," she offered at the girl. "I'm getting one myself today, if all goes well."

The Sword of a Thousand Truths, locked away in its case, had gathered almost enough power to really start things up now. It was difficult to sense what kind of people were around her, exactly, without expending all of her energy in one effort... At least there seemed to be a generous number of bodies about. Vivian consoled herself that at least luck should favor her in the pickings, considering that it was all destiny anyway.

Shaking his head, Jarrick gave a little laugh at Hock's announcement. Not many shopkeepers had the sheer audacity to do something like lock potential customers in. Though, at the very least it meant he had a chance to watch Carilee. This being so that he could make sure nothing got damaged of course.

Remembering Carilee, he turned away for a moment to look back at the counter. Hearing chatter to his rear, he glanced back and saw that Carilee had already taken his place in the conversation, not that it seemed to really be going anywhere. Apparently Carilee had brought up swords again. Raising his voice to get back into the conversation, he cut in after Carilee's last comment, "So sorry to interrupt," he spoke up, " But what happened to this magic sword that you were wanting? Did Hock not have one?"

Colby stared at Hock’s retreating back. She was locked in his shop…the whole idea irritated her, but there really wasn’t anything she could do about it. Her attention was jerked away from that thought when a girl began talking to her about her sword. Well, not her sword, and Colby was about to tell her that when Jarrick interrupted. Rather than answering to the new girl, Colby merely stood there and waited for her turn to speak.

Noru laughed to herself lightly. "I'm sorry, but in a close battle, I don't think a sling shot is going to do you very good. Maybe on the farm for scaring away the birds, and maybe the occasional wild dog, but men? Perhaps a score of idiots, but if you ever got stuck facing a cunning opponent, well . . . a sling shot's not going to cut it." She was sure the boy was good with a sling shot, heck, she had learned a little bit, but eventually got bored with it.

Suddenly, she heard the shopkeepers announcement and an exasperated sigh escaped her. "Like a lock is really going to keep somebody in the store. For heaven's sake, the man has a glass door. All someone's got to do is break through it." She mumbled this, awknowledging the fact that magic had become commonplace in the world. Perhaps, if he was a very adept shopkeeper - and he seemed like he was - he would have some subtle tricks up his sleeve. Deciding it wasn't something to trifle over, Noru diverted her attention.

Glancing over at the small sword, she picked it up via the handle. It was light, simple, well-balanced . . . perfect for a beginner. Sizing Miley up, Noru noted the length of the blade. It was slightly larger than someone his size should have been using, but . . . perhaps he'd be able to grow into it. Abruptly, and without warning, Noru thrust the sword at him. "Hold this for a moment."

Carilee smiled a little. "He's looking, apparently. Though I can't imagine how someone could have a Sword of Bestial Summoning and not be aware of it." She hugged the Introduction to Demonology against her chest. "But I simply must find one before we leave town. I've already checked all of the shops back in Nariz." Deficient, all of them. But those shops weren't meant for real sorceresses. Not that this shop was either, but at least it had better chances. She'd actually be rather impressed if Hock came up with a proper sword for her purposes. Carilee looked back and forth between the boy and girl. "Do you two have names, by chance?"

On the other side of the shop, Miley stared wide-eyed up at the lady. "The locks in this store aren't very nice," he mumbled quietly. But then she was suddenly holding the sword out to him. Feeling like he was being judged but not completely sure how, Miley gingerly took the sword from the lady and held it point up like he was ready to fight. Now what was he supposed to do...?

Colby wasn’t entirely sure what to think of the girl yet. She seemed to feel as if she were better than the vast majority of the population, but Colby really didn’t know her yet, and tried to refrain from making any inferences on the girl.
“My name is Colby Tieross.” She said, “And may I ask yours?” Colby didn’t have the most proper upbringing, but she did know that common manners were to introduce oneself before asking the name of another. And this girl had forgotten that.

“Uh right, sorry about that, you didn’t exactly give me a chance to tell you when you ran in,” Jarrick answered after Colby spoke, not really that surprised that Carilee had either seen it as unfit to first introduce herself to Colby or had simply forgotten, “I’m Jarrick Abiinor by the way, son of the town’s cobbler and an apprentice myself.” He paused for a moment to see if Hock was back. Far more interesting than the middle-aged shopkeeper though, was the young boy from before who seemed to have been armed with his own sword, though it paled in comparison to the one strapped to the taller lady’s back.

"I'm Carilee Savir d'Anaville, daughter of Amile and Eraton d'Anaville," she rattled off. "Though I plan to adopt a new name if I ever manage to properly progress in the demonic arts. It's quite difficult, you see, when I spend all my time hunting down supplies. I suppose that's why it's not more popular." For a few seconds, her eyes wandered around the nearby shelves as if she were deep in thought, but then her attention flicked back to them. "Lovely day, isn't it?"

The Sword of a Thousand Truths was busy refining the last pieces of her spell. She wouldn't want anyone too old, nor anyone too young that would drag the group down... It would be nearly impossible to reset the spell, so she needed to get a good group the first time. While unable to see, hear, or otherwise sense any of the bodies she was about to ensnare. This was going to be lovely.
