What do you mean Kitten?
I think that when people of the middle ages (or before) found the bones and other fossils of dinosaurs they couldn't relate it to anything else in their environment. They had to explain it somehow so they came up with the mytical creatures we now call dragons.

Actually, it were the Chinese who found the dinosaur bones and called them dragons. They also thought that the bones had healing property, which is how a lot of dinosaur bones in Asia were lost.
And no, I don't believe in dragons, animals can breath fire and I doubt that their wings would be able to support their massive body or that they could find enough prey.

I believe in dragons. I guess I'm one of the few. here's my reasoning....

Like it says in the program, most civilizations "came up" with dragons at about the same time. People who never could have possible comunicated had the same idea. Even in the polar regions where no normal reptiles could ever have lived. Also, if they had hollow bones and a gas pouch (im sorry, i forget if it was hydrogen or helium) and had the wing structure of a bumble bee (they were stumped for a while on how they worked) then the could have flown. As far as fire, there is a beetle with the ability to produce a flame, and they found yet anouther way on the program. The bones might have been made from a light material that would deteriorate from minimal weathering and decaying. It is entirly possible that they exsisted or do exsist today. There were, when the spanish sailed to the Americas, twenty foot man-eating birds on certain islands. If such creatures could exsist, why not dragons?

I was just wondering if anyone thought like me, and believed dragons are real. If you disagree with me or you just want to learn more about dragons go to this website http://www.colba.net/~tempest/ and watch the movie, Dragons: a fantasy made real. If you can't access either one just pm me and I can tell you a lot about dragons, and if you have a question about them I will do my best to answer, or look for the answer. Just pm me or post here.

I don't believe dragons are real. I think the belief in them stems from people, even ancient people, finding dinosaur bones and trying to make sense of them. That, combined with the universal human fear of snakes makes for some interesting dragon types. As for the flying part, I'm not sure where that comes from unless some fosils of the flying dinosaurs (terradactil ?)were found.

Now, myself, I am a rare species of fictitional dragon, the one connected with wild horses. 3nodding

You know there is a religion out there where people actually believe they are dragons in mortal bodies? I found a site a long time ago, but it basically gave you personality tests and such to match the colored dragonflight. Let me know if anyone has more info.

I don't really think dragons are or were real.

I will admit though that it is possible that dragon like creatures may have once coexisted with our distant ancestors (no reason to expect every creature that ever lived to leave a fossil record, some ancient reptiles are somewhat close especially aquatic ones and may have survived longer than we think)

There was a show on the discovery channel that mentioned an interesting theory at the end of it explaining why all cultures seem to have a version of dragons. The basic idea is that man's distant ancestors would have been pretty small ape like creatures that lived in grasslands where their primary predators would have been Big Cats (which incidentally can have really really bad breath) Big snakes, and Big Eagles (which would have been alive at that time), and that dragons are basically a combination of the prominent traits of the primary predators that we still have a semi-instinctive fear of ingrained in us. This would also explain the fear/admiration/emulation thing a lot of people have with dragons. Seems like a pretty good theory to me but no way to test it of course.

Also the book Eragon was much better than the movie (you are all right).

I wonder how big a dragon would be if they existed...........

Im pretty sure they changed in size as there lives continued.

Well they would be the size of a what we call today a lizard.

not neccesarily, I believe dragons can be as big as a T rex or as small as a lizard, there are different kinds of dragons with different appearences, sizes, and abilities

They made a program in Discovery Channel a while back. Not sure if that was the right channel. But point is, it's still amazing how in every civilization they depicted dragons in some form or the other. Still, I think dragons are cool and would be half scared to death to be face to face with one... sweatdrop
Not every civilization, and none of the flying lizards look anything alike or have similar powers.

Well the asian dragon was created, because there was a tribe whose crest was that of a snake. This tribe went around conquering other tribes. Everytime it conquered a tribe, it added a piece of their animal crest to the snake crest. The end result was called a long, with the body of a snake, head of a quilin, antlers of a deer, eagle claws, fish tail, ect. When the europeans translated the chinese language, they decided to call the long a dragon. It is my opinion that the chinese long and the euro dragon have nothing in common, except that the idiot who did the translation decided to call them the same creature.

I don't know how the euro dragon originated, but it seems like the europeans added wings to many kinds of land animals and called them mythological creatures.

horse + wings = pegasus
lion + wings = gryphon
deer + wings = hippogryph
lizard + wings = dragon
