Berra inwardly flinched at his words, but didn't let her smile waver. "Maybe..." she allowed, looking down at herself and painfully reminded of how small she was. Maybe Talonfaust was right to protect her the way he did...she recalled HIS story about tangling with a hawk when he'd been about her age. Maybe--no. She pushed those thoughts out of hand. She could do this.

"I'll need to get ready before I go." she began. "That'll take some time, and I can learn more about what I'll be up against." She took a deep breath, cleansing herself, and putting more confidence in her voice. "I'm not afraid...and I'll work hard." Her eyes sparkled a bit as they watched Yanvir, at least sure of -that- much. She was certainly prepared to give whatever he offered her best attempt.

Yanvir reached down to the shelf and picked up one of the two pieces of candy he had taken as payment, fiddling with the wrapper. "Hard work is nice, but Yanvir know truth: hard work not mean nothing. You maybe work very very hard at being hawk, but never become hawk. Same with everything. You only good as you born. Yanvir very lucky and born VERY, very good, thus Yanvir great and mighty!"

She supposed she couldn't argue with that, but at the same time, she didn't know how good she -had- been born. She was still attempting to figure her capabilities out, beginning with her magic and working up to other things.

"That's true..." she nodded. "And I know everybody can't be as gifted as you are...but I'm still learning about myself and I don't plan on going until I feel ready." Talon was helping her with what little magic he knew...and if push came to shove, she could always ask Shalafi or Miss Yeande for further help.

And if further push came to further shove, and she decided she simply could not face what had been planned for her, she supposed little was stopping her from bowing out either.

Forgetting the candy, Yanvir eyed her carefully. "If you gonna wait, Yanvir must point out make no guarantee you first to go on quest. Just not yet hear anyone come back with artifact. So maybe send somebody else if you take long." He nestled the tips of his claws together and drummed his fingers together like a salivating spider. "You do make good hawk meal, maybe one mouthful."

Berra eeped and recoiled a bit from both Yanvir's statement and his eerily-accurate spider impression. Recovering herself, she cleared her throat and moved forward again.

"I won't take too long to leave. Just enough to get things together." she assured him, finding her smile again. "And--and if somebody gets there before me, then I guess that can't be helped." She figured that anyone had just as much right to seek out the same thing she was looking for, after all. Just because she was being sent for it didn't mean she was entitled to it.

Shrugging, Yanvir went back to tending his tails, combing out the tufts with his fingers. "Okay, Yanvir give you quest now. Or maybe not. Yanvir get tired, maybe sleep now."

She felt her heart sink a bit at his sudden indecision and hovered a little closer, her ears drooping a bit again. "Please, Yanvir?" she asked hopefully. "It would mean a lot to me to do a quest for someone so great."

It wasn't entirely empty flattery as this was her first encounter with any sort of powerful feien, though she supposed that a bit of flattery couldn't hurt. The ancient seemed to be very fond of his position of power. On top of that, much like Ankou and Koralu, he seemed to be slightly amiss upstairs.

Eyes fluttering shut, Yanvir went limp against the hippo. "Fading! Fading," he chanted, voice falling until it was scarcely a whisper, and then became nothing at all.

Berra furrowed her brow and vented a small sigh through her nose at the black, white and green feien's inert form. She wondered if she should press him more or just let him sleep. She HAD come rather late at night, after all, and the rudeness of that seemed to balance out the rudeness of his sudden lack of desire to speak to her.

"Maybe I'll come back after you rest, then." she said, withdrawing from the plushie and meanwhile wondering where exactly she was going to go. She had no idea how long she'd been gone or whether Talon and Karma were looking for her by now. Maybe she could stay in the shop until Yanvir felt more up to finishing what they'd begun.

She hovered in place a moment, puzzling over her options.

And in that moment, there was a POP and suddenly Yanvir teleported directly in front of her, mouth open to reveal his fangs and claws curled menacingly next to his head. "BOO!" he shouted, and stuck out his tongue. His three tails thrashed wildly behind him.

With a squeak, Berra flailed in midair a moment, her heart jackhammering in her chest as she righted herself. Goggling at Yanvir with wide eyes, she collected her scattered wits and wondered what that had been for.

Yanvir seemed to find this an exceedingly disappointing reaction. He lowered his arms and closed his mouth. "You boring!" he pronounced, turning his back to her.

"I'm--I'm sorry?" she said uncertainly, trying to figure out what he would have preferred her to do. His reaction to her sneaking up on him hadn't been any braver, just much louder.

As he turned his back to her, she floated down to touch down on the shelf, folding her hands behind her back. "...was I supposed to scream?" she wondered aloud.

In a flash he was back, waving his arms up and down like mad. "YES!" he exclaimed. "VERY LOUD! You not think Yanvir is great and mighty! You is not enough scared!"

Berra, though part of her had been prepared for him to make a redux of his previous attack, had not quite been expecting it so soon or so violently.

She drew back, ankles tangling, and spilled on her backside as, this time, a shrill shriek rang up from her throat, reverberating throughout the toy-littered closet.
