A'ier and his question had her rather stumped. She hadn't really thought about that, it had never been important. Then again, ifs he really took time to consider it, she never required gossip to strike up a conversation...it just helped. Especially if common grounds were hard to find until the familiar barriers had been dropped between individuals.

So why did she tolerate individuals who clearly had no intention of opening up? Similarly, why did she insist on being near by a creature when she could scarcely stand what he was? Hm, perhaps A'ier wouldn't fully comprehend what he had done but the mare was now a damn sight more confused than she had been before.

Was it manners, or was it something else?

...And what did squirrels have to do with anything!

"Squirrels indeed." She replied in a rather peculiar tone, partially lost in her own thoughts. "And I must confess that you would make a very interesting topic of conversation A'ier, I just doubt that Ti'ran would appreciate the undivided attention of other mares. My mere presence is enough to frazzle him I suspect." She pointed out in a good natured manner.

Squirrels had to do with everything. She had used them as the foundation of her statement!

Severely confusing him in the process, it would seem. They still hadn't made it to the same page just yet, and Ti'ran's response to her offish mention was but a simple shake of his head.

"'You' as in me, or Ti'ran and myself collectively?" A'ier's more characteristic, lighthearted tone implied he was probably joking. "Maybe. Well, probably." The unicorn never had been one for attention... Regardless of the variety. "Can't imagine you'd have much good to say about us either, considering." He didn't wait for a response though. "What sort of gossip is it mares like to exchange amongst themselves, anyway?" And he sounded genuinely curious.

"Frazzle is likely an overstatement." Ti'ran fell silent a moment, and regarded her with an even gaze. She was honestly fairly tolerable when she wasn't on some crusade or another - and that was taking the 'I'm drowning' and 'how could you?!' incidents into consideration.

"Only you A'ier." Yei replied smoothly, shaking out the kinks in her mane. She had meant them both collectively but humouring the wolf was suitably more entertaining than jesting with his companion. Perhaps that was why she was so inclined towards them, perhaps it was A'ier that bridged the divide and made the company bearable?

"Although I must admit, I am not sure you would be 'mate material' for many of the mares on the plains A'ier." She teased, a small smile creeping onto her equine lips. She had always wondered what it would be like to have a companion, she suspected it would have been an enjoyable experience or at least educational to say the least.

Unfortunately, their wires had crossed yet again though for Yei had not been discussing squirrels, she had been discussing raccoons!

Men. They never listened!

"Are you insinuating that I do not have that effect on you?" She didn't dwell on their crossed wires for long it appeared, "I really rather was hoping to have that 'frazzle' factor that everyone seems to be talking about." She mused and then, without warning she jumped into an entirely different topic.

"As for the gossip... Oh well you know, it can be anything from the latest accessories to the newest stud on the plains." She explained, canting her head to the side thoughtfully. "Although things have been quiet as of late, much to my disappointment."

A'ier really, really hadn't expected her to reply in that fashion. Had he been Ti'ran, he probably would have snorted dismissively, and left the rest in silence. He wasn't though, and as such, he took it as a rather golden opportunity. A chance to springboard the conversation into an amusing, potentially compromising angle for Ran. That was always entertaining, if only because he spared no fear for repercussions.

"They don't know what they're missing." The wolf had pushed himself to his paws at some point, and he took the moment to stretch himself to his full stature, then give his (surprisingly well kempt) coat a dignified tousle. "It's their loss, at any rate. But I fancy myself a bachelor anyway." Well, that, and the obvious species discrepancy. That went without saying though - it wasn't humorous enough for his taste.

"Ran though..." A'ier tipped his nose toward his companion to scrutinize. "It probably is just as well for him. He can hardly compare to my charm." He flashed a sarcastic grin, to which the unicorn gave an audible huff A'ier knew was disapproving.

"That suits me fine," Ti'ran remarked. It was a good thing Yei didn't further point out the oversight though... He didn't make such trivial, foolish mistakes. He had been listening (and paying attention!), and his cool visage likely would have melted with embarrassment.

Blissfully ignorant, he too flowed easily to the next comment. "Not particularly." Not to disappoint though - that was a good thing, despite how much she may have been 'hoping' otherwise. That skill was remarkably unique to Ris'hin, and he didn't much look forward to finding it in others.

"It's okay," A'ier interjected. "You wouldn't be able to tell if you did, and Ran wouldn't say otherwise, so feel free to draw your own conclusions. For all we know, you may drive him crazy!" He was obviously joking though.

So obvious, it was remarkable the unicorn didn't comment, snort, shake his head, or otherwise signal his discontent. "I had almost forgotten its meaning," he said instead, ears folding a little. "I only hope this 'quiet' is not a calm before the storm." Plains gossip needed to stay plains gossip. The thought of something so monumental, it reached him even here made him grimace.

She knew when something was a lost cause and arguing with a stallion about something so silly would be ridiculous. Even so, she felt her mood lift considerably at the knowledge that she was right and she could have pointed this out if she wanted to. However, she was still treading cautiously and she suspected her teasing would not be taken in quite as good a nature as a more relaxed stallion.

"I would be inclined to agree." Yei bobbed her head to emphasis this and canted her head to the side, "Your wit and handsome visage are incomparable to those on the plains. I suspect you could have any mare you wanted if you tried." She cooed, although the prospect of a wolf trying to 'woo' a soquili was a rather amusing image.

...Ah, if only such strange things occurred in this world, it would make interesting viewing to say the least.

"Although I suspect that if you really worked hard and were so inclined, you could persuade any mare to try their luck with your companion." She added, clearly teasing. The likelihood of Ti'ran ever becoming romantically involved was slim and a flirtacious Ran was even more unlikely - if anything she suspected he might just...stare.

"But I suppose that 'crazy' will do just as well as frazzled." She added, "Maybe I can work on that one, hm?"

The wolf was positively beaming - likely because he struggled to keep himself from laughing outright, but playing it off like his nurtured pride could have also proved entertaining. "You think I'd have to try?" he puzzled innocently, wearing the expression without a fault.

"Now that is a splendid idea - a goal genuinely worth putting my prowess toward." A'ier flashed another toothy grin, only broadened by Ran's opposing expression.

Beneath that steely frown, A'ier could tell the prospect mortified him.

"Is that really necessary?" Ti'ran defended, ears still folded.

The wolf mostly ignored him, and carried on with his mock scheming. "That would be awfully cruel though..." There was a deliberate pause. "Leading the poor girls on like that, I mean. It'd be an outright lie, after all, if I were to suggest being hopeful was actually a good idea." He glanced Ti'ran again, still scrutinizing.

"For once, I agree with you," the unicorn replied, all but grudging.

A'ier was determined to make him change his mind. "Of course, if I was sure to persuade only the forgiving sorts..." He 'hmm'ed briefly. "It could be worth some priceless entertainment, and she wouldn't hold it against me! And I don't think Ran much cares if others begrudge him."

Ti'ran's piercing stare was answer enough to convince him he'd succeeded. He ignored A'ier though. "You could, but I am not convinced you need to." What exactly he meant by that went unstated.

Yei wasn't quite certain that she followed what Ti'ran meant either. He was truly a puzzle to her and she sincerely doubted she would ever figure him out. He would be like one of those irritating catacombs within the mountains that seemed to go on forever - with more dead ends in them than there were alternative routes.

Sometimes she really hated those types of puzzles but Ran was a little different. For a start he was alive, flesh and blood and couldn't be kicked out of frustration...Then there was the fact that she was so certain he had other qualities he just liked to hide - no normal puzzle had those.

Still, he was nice to have A'ier play along with her. If anything, he ensured that those around his companion were not always overwhelmed by his rather indifferent manner. The anti-social aura could be somewhat brushed aside by the warmth of the fluffy wolf...This was a point she was somewhat envious of as she suspected having a companion like A'ier was indeed an invaluable thing to have.

Nevertheless, back to the topic at hand...

"Oh A'ier, I really think you should at least give it a try." Yei grinned, finding the image of A'ier attempting to 'woo' a mare to be rather amusing. If anything, she knew A'ier wouldn't take offence at their rejections but would get as much amusement from their reactions as she would!

"It could be your chance to find your one true love!"

A'ier could have wooed with the best of them!... If not for the slight conflict of interests that might have followed. He may have preferred himself a bachelor, but he did not fancy himself a heartbreaker, and the two combined with... well, trying his luck (soquili or otherwise) didn't really cross him as an intelligent notion. Personal morals aside, Ti'ran would have had his head for it.

It just wasn't a good idea! That didn't mean he couldn't joke about it though. "I may, I just may." The wolf seemed genuinely contemplative...

Until 'true love' came up. He shook his head abruptly, then lifted it in a proud fashion. "Now, Yei. The objective was to find him mares. Can you imagine how heartbreaking it would be to bump into this 'true love' of mine, only to disappoint her with my free-spirited ways and socially graceless companion? The poor thing would be devastated." A'ier nodded gravely.

"Ran, on the other hand... He hasn't got a soulmate out there anywhere, I'm sure, so his embarrassed rejections should be a little less damaging."

Ti'ran snorted again, his head dipped a little to peer more pointedly at the wolf. "Less damaging to whom?"

Yei took a few moments to watch the interaction between stallion and wolf. There never seemed to be a dull moment around the pair when they were in the company of another; but she was rather curious as to how they were when someone such as she was not around. Were they quiet? Did they laugh and joke?

Somehow, Yei doubted that even in privacy the uni-soquili could joke particularly well.

Still, as A'ier chastised her for considering his love life she feigned guilt and shook her head, hiding her eyes under her long mane. Of course, it would be cute to see baby A'iers running around but she suspected he had a point. She just couldn't picture Ti'ran as any form of uncle or care taker for puppies - especially if they were as loud and as outspoken as she was!

"Perhaps she would be, although it would be amusing if you found that your soul mate was just as free spirited as you were, don't you think?" She mused at last, canting her head to the side at Ran's question...there were some times when Ran caused her to smile secretively inside. For all his lack of social graces, there were occasions when something definitely shone through the cracks in his façade - it was a shame he didn't let that show more often.

"To the mare I suspect, if she knew that you were just a hermit." Yei offered wistfully.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 29, 2007 8:22 am

"Amusing?" His expression wilted, if only slightly. "The collision of two wayward souls hardly qualifies as a relationship, I think. Commitment aside - how do you think Ran would fit into this dynamic? You know how it goes... two's company, three's a crowd."

In solitude, their interactions were much more limited. A'ier's entire method revolved around having someone else around to ricochet his teasing toward Ti'ran. Poking fun at the unicorn directly was disproportionately more difficult, so he didn't often bother.

If A'ier had a 'soul mate' though... Ti'ran would have had hardly a moment's rest. That was an interesting dilemma. The wolf did love his teasing, but even he was not so cruel he would have wished to torment his companion constantly. Restraining his notions though? That was a rare occasion indeed. "Besides, I can't leave Ran off on his own. What would he do without me?"

"Enjoy the peace," the stallion replied, his expression radiating indifference. Truth be told though, he had no desire to return to the lifestyle he had lived before joining A'ier. It was a genuinely symbiotic relationship.

One neither of them really cared to change. "That was a genuine Ran-threat, Yei. Very rare indeed! You may not see another, so treasure it." A'ier sidestepped for show, grinning cheekily all the while.

Ti'ran had backed off though, and he cast the wolf an icy stare. "I've been called worse," he added in bemusement. "Whether or not that is a bad thing varies greatly between individuals."

Now probably wasn't the time for Yei to point out that Ti'ran's response was somewhat predictable. The more often she socialised with him, the longer she remained in his presence, the more accustomed to his manner she became. He simply didn't seem to change, almost as if he enjoyed the quiet solitude and the otherwise repetitive life he led - then again, in a way the mare could almost see his point of view.

While he enjoyed the peace and quiet, which she assumed he had much of despite appearances, she was fairly certain that others craved it. She certainly did - particularly with the growing number of stallions wandering through her territory nowadays...

Bloody males.

"Been called worse?" Yei seemed mildly confused by this. She hadn't considered 'hermit' to be a bad thing to be honest, she found it a little sad to be alone all the time but still... The fact that Ran could have been called anything worse both saddened her and piqued her curiosity. In part she wished to know what he was being called but in others...

"Like, fuzzlebutt?" She enquired tentatively, not entirely serious.
