They weren't decoys though...they were the first and last line of defense at Thermoplyae. 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, some 600 Thebens (forced to stay).
They moved because Athens was of course debating a course of action, and, as the movie stated, the Spartans were celebrating a celestial event. And besides, after the childhood a Spartan had, it's no wonder they were more than willing to do such a crazy thing.
I mean those guys were nuts...1 kid died because he hid a stolen fox kit under his tunic. He refused to release it and get punished for trying to steal food. The kit tore his stomach out and he died without a sound.
i heard there were athenians in the water, the 300 spartans and some people guarding the rear but they fled
i got this info from the history chanel
You didn't listen very hard then ;D
I know what show you watched on the history channel. The Last Stand of the 300 right?
They say there were more than just the 300 spartans. There were a bunch of other greeks aswell. Then there was the Athenia fleet protecting the strait so that the Persians couldn't attack from behind. I forget who led them, but he was supposedly the one who organized the battle of thermopylae, and not Leonidas. Then the Phocians I bleleive protected the small path that led around behind the Greeks. They fled because they thought their home was going to be under attack.
Chances are that if they didn't leave, they would have died anyway. The immortals were the ones sent down that path.
