"Ha, an admirable goal," proclaimed Corvus. "But the fact of the matter is that ours is hardly the only feien plant. You weren't summoned from it, after all." It had actually taken Corvus quite some time and effort to figure out that feien from different plants had slightly different energy signatures. He was convinced that this was part of the explanation for Yanvir's ability to teleport to a feien plant on the other side of the continent simply by meeting Simon. It made sense enough.

Corvus continued, "But I digress. I'm surprised you're not angry at Julius, really. I'd be, in your position."

"Why..." Shalafi began, then nodded softly. "My sight. I had originally thought it was a defect I'd had since summoning, but I was wrong."

Yeande looked away at that, a bit guiltily. "I'm afraid that was caused by a mistake on the part of Youko and I. When his bloom first arrived, we set it out in the sun, thinking that the bloom would do well. He remembered Aileron and Gogol's pale blooms doing well there. Unfortunately, he had no idea that Shalafi was an ice Feien at the time, or that his colouring would make him as sensitive to light as he is."

Nodding stiffly, Shalafi didn't say anything more on the subject. It was still a sore spot for him, but he was loathe to blame his bonded for what seemed to be a reasonable assumption.

"Oh, no, it's a defect from summoning," remarked Corvus, sounding slightly surprised. "I've actually come to the conclusion that Shalafi was in fact a failed attempt at creating another summoner on Julius's part. For all his supposed greatness, he really is awful at summoning blooms. It's the only reason I can think of for him creating a non-summoner. Once he creates a summoner, he doesn't need to do anything else. Therefore, it's reasonable to think he was aiming for a summoner and just botched it and tried again. He may have even botched it more than once and destroyed the other blooms."

Both feien turned towards him then, mixed shock on their faces. "You mean... it wasn't because of us?" Yeande ventured softly, a bit hopeful that she could stop feeling guilty over the blind feien's disability.

This put a new spin on things, Shalafi thought to himself, his mind already working. "But how to explain the others that were summoned around that time? Surely they can't all be failed summoners, and none of them seem to have anything wrong with them."

"Perhaps the other summoner is the one who brought them about?" Yeande was watching Shalafi carefully and could already see the gears whirling in the young feien's mind.

Corvus stiffened. His voice suddenly took on a low growling tone. "That really depends on which feien you're talking about." His eyes narrowed and his hands tightened into fists.

The tone was unmistakeable. "Physical defects, I mean," Shalafi replied softly, his voice immediately changing tone to something softer in an attempt to soothe the summoner's ruffled feathers. "Mental ones are too numerous to list, in the case of some."

"What about physical defects? The worst I've summoned has been Simon's eyesight, and that's one out of fifty feien. Well, two, since there's a second feien with poor eyesight, but still. Julius has to his credit two summoners of sound body and one non-summoner who possesses eyesight even worse than Juli's own. And then at least a dozen blooms so malformed they couldn't even bond. I've never, ever summoned a malformed bloom."

Frowning, Shalafi stood there in silence for a few moments, arms crossing over his chest. "He's stopped summoning blooms now, though, yes?" he asked hopefully. If he was one of the LEAST affected by this, then he was grateful that the others hadn't been able to bond. "If not, he has to be made to stop."

"I don't know, it's not like he exactly comes up and tells me he's been out screwing up his summons," said Corvus hotly. "I don't think anyone's capable of stopping Julius if he wants to do something. Not even Yanvir, and he can teleport across the whole continent!" Somehow, Corvus just kept getting stuck on that teleportation issue. His jealousy was quite plain.

"You could likely do the same, if you worked at it. You're merged now, you have more power than most feien will ever see in their lifetimes. You and Yeande both are stronger than either of you think, you just haven't done anything with it yet." Shalafi paced away a few steps, then chewed at his lower lip for a moment. "Perhaps what it will take for Julius to stop is to be faced with a failure that he likely never knew survived. If he was destroying the blooms that didn't make it, then it's possible I was not only mistakenly summoned, but mistakenly bonded as well."

"No, he wouldn't have turned over your bloom for delivery if that were the case," reasoned Corvus, realizing this was a sensitive topic for Shalafi. "The only bloom Julius have ever regretted was my own, and he's told me as much, so I don't think you need worry about yourself in that regard."
PostPosted: Mon Nov 08, 2004 6:51 am

That made him feel a little better. Shalafi kept his arms around his chest, fingers drumming against his skin as he stared towards nothing in particular. "Still... I need to speak with him. I've had enough scorn, pity, coddling and general disbelief directed towards me in my life so far that I can only hope he doesn't put anyone else through this."

"You would seem to be an isolated incident," said Corvus. He shrugged at the smaller feien. He had severely underestimated Shalafi at their earlier meetings, that much was clear, and now had a great deal of respect for the juvenile. If only because Shalafi seemed to share Corvus's worldview. "If you can come up with a way to stop Julius, I will be more than happy to assist in any way I can."
PostPosted: Mon Nov 08, 2004 7:03 am

"I'll let you know if I can come up with something... however, I'd say not to expect miracles." Already, the boy's thoughts were turning. He did need to see Julius, regardless... and the thought that he was the only one that the ancient had summoned recently gave him a bit of relief.

Yeande simply watched the interplay between the two, one brow lifting. Well, it seemed that Corvus COULD be nice to others... or as nice as he got, anyway. This knowledge might just ease the apology to Aileron as well, knowing how fond the air feien was of Shalafi.

Then Corvus had to go ruin the effect by giving that evil little smirk of his and rubbing at his chin with sinister consideration. "You might do well to not mention that you spoke with me," the summoner told Shalafi. "Julius really doesn't like me and might refuse to talk to you completely if he knows we've spoken."
