The Roanoke Opera is performing "La Traviata" this Friday, and I can get free tickets through my college, but I can't go because I have a performance that evening. xp Dangit.

I went to the symphony here on Sunday -- the cellist was Alisa Welterstien (sp? that's not right). She was amazing. I think that someone had posted here saying that they'd seen a concert by her... Anyone remember?

The month of October was a concert laden month for me, when I attended three concerts just for the heck of it.

I heard Olga Kern (tied for 1st at the 2001 Van Cliburn competition) perform Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, and although it was technically brilliant I find the whole thing emotionally cold. Although I am aware Chopin wrote the concerto as a showpiece for his talents, I doubt he wanted executed like a machine like she did. The rest of the concert consisted of Weber's overture to "Der Freischutz" before the concerto and Prokofiev's 5th Symphony after it. What's interesting is that the conductor at the time seemed to like to perform the pieces much faster than I am accustomed to, so all three works were played at somewhat breakneck speeds. It was an okay concert.

Then I heard Philip Glass and his ensemble perform his latest work "Orion" at my college and I have to say it was breathtaking. I came in expecting a somewhat clinical performance and instead I was exposed to a vibrant soundworld (okay that sounded a bit like a magazine review . . .). The entire premise was a unity of world cultures using instruments from all over the world. I might have to get a recording of this later, but I'm afraid it won't live up to the sound of the live performance.

I also attended a concert by the Canadian Brass a couple days later and it was whimsical and fun to say the least. It was much enjoyable.

BALALAIKAS! domokun

There were also domras, and a gusli, and a bayan, plus two flutes, an accordion, and some timpani.

Contrabass balalaikas are frikkin' HUGE. O___O Even more unwieldy than a cello.

o_O Whoah. I've never seen one of those before. That thing is probably annoying to carry around.

What are domras, guslis, and bayans? confused

I THINK I've seen those balalaikas before....only, in a more standard size.

Is that the Eastern instrument that was used in Ancient Egyptian and Middle Eastern music? If so, I know what it is...if not, I'm wrong. >_>

I think you're speaking of the Oud, which does not look like a Balalaika. I think balalaikas are primarily a Slavic thing, meaning wherever the former USSR used to be, including Russia where it is most prominent I believe.

Interesting tidbit, the Oud was the predecessor to the Lute, which came about prominently in the early Renaissance when the expansion of Islam into Europe brought the instrument to the continent. This is also why Lute and Oud sound quite similar because they are essentially the same instrument.
