Group RP: A New Friend?

Date: September 03, 2005
Satus: Complete or incomplete? -is unsure-
Participants: Marie and Alexander

Kaze Taco

Alexander was staring out of his telescope, even though it was mid-afternoon. He said that sometimes he could see the stars during the day, but that wasn't the case now.

"Oh darn..." he pouted as he drew away and sat on the windowsill, hugging his book of Greek myths.

Green_Eyes
Hopefully the library would be closed and she'd be able to go home and curl up with Winifred and a good book. Marie wasn't pouting as she followed closely behing Green, who'd been trying to get Marie to be a bit more social since her family had left, but the little girl's fingers were crossed behind her back, hoping that she would be able to go home.

Green pushed the door to the library open and grinned down at Marie, gesturing for her to go inside, "I'll be back to pick you up in an hour or two, honey, I've got so many errands to run. You should be fine here. Bye sweetheart."

And just like that, Marie was left, standing inside the library without her gaurdian. What was she going to do if nobody was there?

Green clearly wasn't thinking clearly.

Kaze Taco

Alexander turned and looked at the blonde girl who had entered. He had never seen her before, but she looked nice enough.

"Hello," he said, "I'm Alexander..." He gave a nod before patting the telescope.

"I was just looking for any stars that might've come out early. I love the stars, you see," he grinned.

Green_Eyes
There was somebody there! Oh, crud. Now, her manners would require for her to talk to him. What if she said something stupid and mad a foold of herself? What if he didn't like her? Before the boy had spoken and made his presence known, Marie had been quickly growing quite fond of the idea of being surrounded by books for a few hours. She'd wondered about how many she would have been able to read in such a short time...

... and then she'd realised that she wasn't alone.

"H...Hello," she greeted him, smiling a smile that didn't quite meet her eyes. Marie straightened her dress and made sure that her right arm was hidden by her cape.

"I'm M...Marie," she nodded, shifting her weight from one foot to the other.

"Really? Can you tell me about them? The stars, I mean." She spoke quietly, choosing to stare at the telescope instead of looking Alexander in the eye. The boy had managed to snag her ineterest, and her curiousity had gotten ahold of her.

She'd always found the stars to be a beautiful thing.

Kaze Taco
Alexander's eyes lit up when she asked to know about stars.

"Oh! You're interested in stars, too?" he asked, the short boy suddenly becoming far more energetic, "You've come to the right person, Miss Marie, I know... well, some about stars! As much as someone can without going to them directly..." Alexander cleared his throat before starting a small smeech:

"Some people say that stars are great big balls of gas... but I don't believe that. Stars shimmer... gas doesn't. So how could a shimmering star be a great big ball of gas? I believe that stars are tangible things that you can fly among! Eh... do you want to see if some have come out?" Alexander sheepishly extended his hand so he could lead her to the telescope.

"...Please?"

Green_Eyes
Even though she'd never actually wondered about stars and what they were made of, Marie had always found them to be beautiful and she'd often found herself staring out her bedroom window and staring up at them when she had a difficult time falling asleep.

"I think they're pretty..." her voice was as quiet and timid as always, and now, her cheeks were begining to tinge pink. She found Alexander's excitement to be a bit intimidating... but she couldn't ignore the tiny and excitement twinge the sat at the pit of her stomach. Perhaps meeting new people wasn't too terrible.

She listened while he spoke, completely caught up in his speech. He seemed to know so much and what he said made so much sense! Gas didn't shimmer. Actually, as far as she knew, gas didn't look like anything. It sure smelled horrible, though.

When he held his hand out towards her Marie froze. He wanted her to take his hand? She studied him for a short moment, staring at him with timid blue eyes.

The telescope was just there, she would have no problem get there on her own... but her good manners told her to take his hand. After all, it was only a hand. What harm could it do?

"O.. Okay," she took his hand with her left and let him lead her to the telescope.

Kaze Taco
His touch was a gentle as a lamb's... which was a given since he seemed to love sheep so much. He was rather oblivious to her nervousness: his head was in the clouds so much that he could almost appear a bit insensitive... but no, he was just oblivious. His smile was true and wide, though, when the two of them reached the telescope.

"Feel free to look into it for as long as you like. It's still rather early... I'm not sure if any stars have come out yet," he frowned, "I hope that they have. The sky can be so boring without stars..."

Green_Eyes
Before they had reached the telescope, Marie had bit down hard on her cheek, which she'd been chewing nervously on, and it had been all the little girl could do not to cry out and draw attention to her pain, which would only embarrass her more.

She was visibly relieved when they reached the telescope as she hastily let go of his hand and peered into the telescope. Hopefully he would mistake her hastiness for simply being excited to see the stars close-up.

It was a beautiful site, even with the lack of stars. Marie quite loved the sky anytime. The clouds took on some of the most amazing shapes...

"I don't think that the sky can ever be boring. Have you ever studied the shapes the take? I remember this one time when I swear there was a perfect castle," Marie had spoken before she'd had time to realise what she was doing.

It seemed she was already warming up to Alex.

Kaze Taco

"A castle in the sky...?" Alexander's eyes widened as he hoisted himself onto the windowsill with some effort and pressed his nose to the windowpane, "Clouds never seem to do special things for me. It's only the stars..." Alexander pouted as he swung his legs back over the windowsill and watched Marie look into the telescope. He was so happy to see someone who enjoyed the sky, the only other girl that he knew was Paige, who seemed to be more interested in playing 'hero and princess' than anything. He didn't mind it, really, but it was nice to meet someone who shared his interests.

Green_Eyes
"Oh no," Marrie shook her head, and wandered over to the window. She studied the sky for a moment, a thoughtful look on her face and then, she used her left hand to point at a group of clouds in the shape of a horse, "Look there. Do you see the horse? The clouds don't just take on shape for a few people... They're a treasure for everyone to share."

It was an appealing thought, though; the idea that the clouds might have selected her to share their beauty with when there were millions of other people around.

Kaze Taco
Alexander blushed as he followed her gaze, for he did not see a horse.

"I..." he started before looking away, ".... I see a cow, not a horse..." Indeed, to him the rearing horse looked like a grazing cow, somehow.

"I'm sorry," he continued, "I wish that I could see a horse." He smiled sheepishly before tilting his head, "Now that I think about it, though, clouds do tend to look like the wool of a sheep."

Green_Eyes
When Alexander didn't see a horse, she blinked at him for a moment, surprised. How cloud he not see it? It was right there, in plain site. Something told her to look at it from his point of view... and so, Marie stood as close behind Alexander as she was comfortable with and squinted up at the clouds. Yes, from there it did kind of look like a cow.

"I see the cow, too. Stand where I was standing just a moment ago," she grinned, this time the smile reaching her eyes, "From there it might look more like a horse."

The wool of sheep? She pondered that thought for a very brief moment and then decided that she agreed with the boy.

"They do remind me of sheep. So, the clouds really can take on any shape. It is funny, in a way, isn't it? How it could be a sheep a cow and a horse all in one go?"

If Green had been there to see Marie talking Alexander the way she was... the woman would have been amazed. It was rare for Marie to become so comfortable around somebody so quickly.

Group RP: Sisters

Date: October 02, 2005
Satus: Complete
Participants: Marie and Nyx

"Hurry up, Marie!"

Marie ignored her sister as she continued to search the bedroom they shared for her favorite yellow sweater. It was quite cool outside, and she had no intention of wandering around in the cold in her simple t-shirt. Non at all.

"Will you at least tell me what the hell you're looking for?" Nyx grumbled, her hands on her hips as she tapped her sneakered foot against the floor with impatience. They were wasting precious time! She wanted to show Marie the cool treasure she'd found in the clutter of trees that sat at the end of the road but if Marie didn't hurry up, it would be far too dark out and Gee wouldn't let them leave the house.

"My sweater. The one with lily on the front." Marie knelt down and stuck her head under Nyx's bed.

"Oh for Pete's sake. It's right here!" Nyx kicked a pair of jeans to the side and picked up the sweater Marie was hunting for, "Honestly, it was in plain sight. You couldn't have told me sooner, could you? We've wasted so much time!"

"Sorry, sorry." Marie shrugged, took the sweater from Nyx and pulled it on with ease. She'd grown so used to always hiding her right hand that she was quite skilled at changing clothes without anybody seeing said hand.

"Are you ready yet?" Nyx pursed her lips and glared at her sister, thouroughly fed up. It was time to GO!

"M'hm." Marie used her left hand to push a red head-band into her hair. She didn't care much for putting her hair up but she knew better to keep her hair out of her eyes whenever Nyx wanted to show her something. More often than not; she'd end up climbing something or crawling under something else.

"Excellent! Now, follow me."

Marie followed her older sister out the front door and down the road. It was chilly out. She'd been right to make Nyx wait and look for her sweater. The quiet of the neighbouring houses was... unsettling. There were no other children outside.

Often times, the neighbour children would be playing street hockey in front of their house. Marie avoided them whenever she could. Nyx, on the other hand, would always run out and start bossing the smaller ones around.

Where was Nyx leading her? The little girl was tempted to call out to her older sister, but, she held back. The other girl was already unhappy with her. Questions would only cause Nyx to become... less pleasant and then she might not even take her to see the treasure she'd found!

And, she had to admit, she was looking forward to seeing it. Was it real treasure? Could she eat it? Did it smell good? What did it look like?

They reached the mini forest. A gravel path led the way straight through the middle and marie started down it only to have Nyx grab her hand and tug her to a path off to the side that couldn't possibly have been man made.

"Deer tracks," Nyx said brightly, gesturing at the ground, "I came here yesterday and I found them, so I looked them up in a book. We won't see any real deer, though. 'Cause we're too noisy and we smell bad... or something."

Marie squinted at the ground in search of the deer tracks and sure enough she spotted them... What was that?

"Deer s**t." Nyx explained, continuing to twist her way through the tangles of branches, pulling Marie close behind her.

Marie wrinkled her nose and stepped gingerly around the rest of the area. She shouldn't have worn her knew shoes.

Finally, after what seemed like years of travelling, Nyx stopped.

"We're here!" she chirped and dropped Maries hand.

Where was here exactly?

It looked like any other part of the forest. There were way too many trees.

At Marie's silence, Nyx rolled her eyes and pointed upwards, at the top of the nearest, largest tree.

Marie stared in surprise and her mouth formed a small 'o.' It wasn't the vastness of the tree that surprised her so much, but the small wooden building that sat way up high, on it's thick branches.

It was a beautiful thing, that wound all the way around tree.

"A treehouse!" Marie exclaimed.

Diary Entry

~

October 16th, 2005

Dear Diary,

I have been terribly busy these last few weeks, fixing up the little house in the tree Nyx found awhile ago. Nyx said that she hadn't actually planned on showing it to me yet, as she'd wanted to decorate and fix it up for herself and that the only reason she'd showed it to me in the first place was because she'd realised that she needed my help. (I'm sure she was lying. As much as she wants to me think that she didn't want to share the tree house with me, I'm sure she'd planned on telling me from the start. She just doesn't want me to think she's gone soft.)

Out of everybody I know, I enjoy spending time with Nyx the most... Which is funny, because she bosses me around and swears and mom is always sending her to the room we share. (Mom says that we'll start work on my room as soon as she has the time. I'm excited.)

We've painted the treehouse purple and yellow, our favorite colors. I wanted to paint something pink but Nyx wouldn't let me. When we told mom what the paint was for she shook her head and laughed at us. She said that we needed a special type of paint that wouldn't wear off... and the paint has already started to peel away. Nyx was really upset. It was such a waste of her pretty water color paints!

Mom's just gone out to get the proper paint, enough for the treehouse, my room and the pretty lantern's bedroom.

I'm a bit sad that the construction workers who were building the lantern's bedroom are gone as they've taken they're dog away with them. He was so much fun, and he loved me. Everytime he saw me he'd run over with his tail-wagging and his red ball.

I played fetch a lot with him.

Maybe mom will let me get a puppy... or a kitten maybe? I'd love a kitten.

Yours Truly,
Marie

Diary Entry

~

April 20, 2006

Dear Diary,

So many things have happened! For starters, we've moved to a new home. It's way out in the country and it is BIG. The first time I saw it... was something I'll never forget. It was falling apart. There were holes everywhere. I'm not even sure how long it took mom (and the hired crew) to finish fixing it up. Now, its pretty and comfortable and I have a big room all to my self. Well, Winifred shares it with me but she doesn't take up much space. I love it here. I can be by myself whenever I want. Well, alone with Winifred. She gets scared when she's all alone in my room and I can't stand the thought of leaving her up there by herself.

Winifred and me have gotten so much reading done, now that I have a place to go and hide from the others. In the basement. They never think of looking for me there (Nyx and mom are scared of the basement) and I get to be alone with Winifred and Harry Potter or Frodo or Lyra and Pantailamon or... whoever I'm reading about. I've managed to even make a little special place down there just for me. There's pillows and blankets and one lamp. I borrowed the pillows and blankets from mom's bedroom... I wonder if she's noticed that they're missing yet...

Remember the pretty lantern I mentioned once or twice? Well, that grew into a little girl. I'm not the youngest anymore! Her name's Eve and she's... herself. Nyx calls her 'spaced out' and 'weird' but I like that about her. I never get bored when she's around. Nyx has grown too. She's a teenager now. Mom says that I'll grow up to as pretty as her some day, but I'm not very sure that I even want to be that old. Growing up seems like a lot of work.

Group RP: Eriol and Marie

Date: April 21 2006
Satus: Complete
Location: The Library HQ
Participants: Marie, Eriol and Viviana

~

Green_Eyes
The library was a wonderful, quiet place and Marie felt at home amongst the books. Nothing could ever compare to such a peaceful atmosphere and Marie was growing increasingly grateful that Green had agreed to let her spend the afternoon here while she took the others shopping. The little blonde girl was curled up in her cape and tucked into a corner of the library, completely absorbed into Ponyboy's world.

Her imagination was soaring high as her eyes raced across the pages, wondering what she would have done in Johnny's place. Would she have been able to do what he did, in order to save his best friend? She wasn't sure.

She chewed her bottom lip and flipped the page, excited about finishing the story.

DivineSaturn

Eriol was a bit hesitant about heading for the library. He hadn't been able to set foot in once since the last library he'd entered tried to drown him. But finally he'd exhausted the pile of books in his room. He wanted to get some for Viviana as well, and simply didn't have the financial option of purchasing new books.

So the library was the only choice, and there was only one library he could trust. At least there, kids appearing was common and something he was used to.

Viviana and Outcry were packed into a new gift for the three of them DS had picked up. It was one of those newfangled baby-carriers that could be worn like backpacks, with an extra attatchment so that the daemon could ride too. Girl and whale looked in amazement at all the books, waving whatever limbs they had. It was certainly impressive, and oddly comforting.

"Ssssh," Eriol hissed, closing the door to the library behind him. "Hey! Anyone here?"

Green_Eyes
The girl heard the door open, the baby's gurgles and the stranger's call but the sounds did not register. Instead, she continued to chew on her bottom lip. The book seemed to have enslaved her as she was nearing the last few pages and could not look away. Tears streamed down her began to trickle down her cheeks and she let out a soft, sad hic-up.

Why were the best stories the ones that always made her cry?

DivineSaturn

It didn't look like anyone was there, but there was some sort of sound that indicated otherwise. Frowning, Eriol ventured further into the library, more cautious than he would have been otherwise.

Around one of the many corners he found his answer. A small girl, reading, and... crying?

"Aw crap," he muttered to himself. "Hey... hey, wha's wrong? You okay?"

Green_Eyes
Startled, Marie gasped and jumped about a foot into the air. She hadn't expceted to meet anybody there. Weren't libraries supposed to be quiet and empty?

But that doesn't mean somebody else couldn't come in search of a good book to read, she reasoned with herself, that's what libraries were for, after all.

"Y-yeah," she nodded her head and used her cape to wipe the tears off her cheeks, "I'm sorry. I was reading. See?"

She smiled sheepishly at the older boy and showed him the book in her hands.

"The Outsiders," her cheeks flamed scarlet when she realised he must have seen her tears and she blurted out, "The ending is sad."

DivineSaturn

"Oh. Jus so long's yer not really upset." It must be a girl thing, crying over sad books. A couple of his "sisters" could often be found doing just that, curled up among a mountain of blankets, or lazing on the grass on a sunny day, with a book and a tearful expression. Most of the time it drove Eriol nuts, but he didn't see a reason to say that.

Cooing happily from her spot on Eriol's back, Viviana waved both arms to the girl. The movements were slow, as if the infant was submerged in water, but she seemed to be putting a great deal of energy in her greeting. Below, Outcry blew a bit of air, staring intently in front of him.

It was hard for Eriol not to be embarrased. What he must look like, with a kid and a shrunken whale on his back! Still, he tried to gloss over the situation with a short apology. "Sorry fer interuptin yer readin."

Green_Eyes
"No, I'm fine," Marie assured him with a shy and unsure look on her face. She wasn't sure what to make of this boy, who was so much taller than her and carried a baby on his back. He intimidated her, that was for sure, but something about him suggested that he didn't mean to make her feel that way. So she stayed, but swore to herself that she'd retreat back to her corner and finish reading the moment it was necessary.

A small, sweet giggle escaped her when the baby on the boy's back waved at her. She looked so funny! Amused, Marie waved back at the child with her left hand and cast a sideways glance at the mini-whale beneath her. Ettiquette required that she not ask, but the questions were threatening to spill off her tongue and into the open air.

"That's a whale," she said as a matter-of-factly and walked around Eriol to get a closer look, "Doesn't it need water to survive?"

DivineSaturn

Outcry's eyes caught on the girl and began to follow her movements, but he remained still. He was actually enjoying the attention, but didn't want to show it. He left the antics to Viviana, who giggled and reached her arms out. When they were out on the street no one ever paid much attention to her, but this girl did. And she seemed to like Outcry too.

"He's a freak of nature or somethin," Eriol muttered, then shook his head. There was no need to act roughly towards the stranger or the whale. "But yeah, most whales do. This guy's sorta got his own built in. Y'can touch 'im if ya like, see what I mean."

Green_Eyes
Marie giggled in response to Viviana and reached out to the girl with her left hand, careful to make sure that her right arm was still carefully concealed beneath her cape.

"Hi," she cooed, briefly wondering why it was so much easier to talk to babies than to others her age, "I'm Marie."

When Eriol spoke a small frown presented itself on her face and she shook her head, "Never a freak."

"Wow," she said tentatively and manouvered herself so that she could use a finger of her right hand to gently poke the whale without Eriol seeing it.

DivineSaturn

Viviana tried to touch the other girl, but was a bit too slow. Marie's attention was back on outcry by the time she'd moved her arms. A bit sulky, she puffed her cheeks out and waited.

When Outcry was touched, the thin layer of mist that enveloped him swirled around Marie, staining her clothes slightly with watermarks. He did not seem particularly against the girl's touch, though he didn't seem to enjoy it either.

"Th'are too freaks," Eriol muttered under his breath. In a slightly more cordial voice he introduced himself. "I'm Eriol. That's Viviana, and the whale's Outcry. S'nice ta meetcha, I guess. Come here a lot?"

Green_Eyes
Marie didn't mind the watermarks for she was too amazed by the bubble of water that Outcry floated around in. She adored the water, lakes with soft, light brown sand espescially.

She turned her attention back to Viviana, this time waiting long enough for the babe to latch onto her finger.

Deciding to ignore Eriol's 'freaks' comment, she replied with a shrug, "I'm Marie. Pleased to meet you, too, I guess."

The blue-eyed girl paused for a moment before answering his next question in a light-hearted tone, "Not really. My mother took my sisters shopping... and I didn't want to go along."

DivineSaturn

Viviana curled her finger's around Marie's outstretched digit slowly. Her hand was stiff and holding on was hard, since she kept sliding around. But the effort, to her, was worth it. It was nice to feel someone else's warmth.

Understanding the agony of a family shopping trip all too well, Eriol nodded sympathetically. "I know. It's a girl thing or somethin." Upon remembering Marie's gender, he hurried to correct himself. "I mean, some girls anyway. I've got a buncha sisters, an most've 'em go shoppin a lot. But some don't. Like Linnea, she's shy and stays in her room most've the time. I guess yer like her."

Wincing slightly, Eriol tried to pull his foot out of his mouth. I mean... yer more quiet. I guess."

Nice save, he thought mentally, brushing some hair out of his face. Looking like a slob and acting like an idiot, what would he do next? Eriol had no romantic ideas concerning the younger girl, but he wanted to appear decent at the very least.

Green_Eyes
Marie sensed the difficulty Viviana was experiencing, and though she was confused, the blonde girl moved her hand in whatever direction would help the babe the most.

She laughed at Eriol and then stopped abruptly, eyes widening with surprise. Had she really just laughed? It wasn't very common that she relaxed enough to laugh with somebody she'd just met.

Perhaps it was the way Eriol had fumbled, or maybe it was the baby's presence.

In that moment, she didn't feel shy or awkward.

"I like shopping for books," she said conversationally, crossing her eyes in hopes of exciting a giggle from Viviana.

DivineSaturn

There were no giggles, but Viviana did let out a high-pitched squeal that one could guess meant she was amused. The girl-person looked silly when she did that, but also a little scary. Suddenly she wasn't sure if she wanted to keep holding onto a scary person, but she did not let go. Partly because it would take a good deal of effort, and partly because holding onto something, anything, made her feel better.

Outcry snorted scornfully, blowing bits of mist into the air, but remained still. He would never show it, but he was a bit scared of the crossed eyes as well. The only evidence that anything had changed was the rigid way the daemon held himself.

"Ah, me too." Other than browsing hoverbike and motorcycle shops, the only stores Eriol went into of his own will were bookstores. "I mean, libraries're cool an all, but sometimes ya jus wanna keep the book. So tha' way yer not worried 'bout messin' it up an havin ta pay a fine. Or not returnin' it when they want ya to." He'd racked up fees at several libraries due to those offences. Still, when it came to finances, the price of a library book couldn't be beat provided you returned it timely.

Pausing a moment, Eriol actually looked at the girl and bit back a laugh. "What're ya doin, lookin like that?"

Green_Eyes
"Exactly," she nodded in agreement, "if the books is your own, you can read it whenever you like how many times you like. Also, there's always the satisfaction of nothing that something belongs to you."

The high-pitched squeal caused a yelp of surprise to come from Marie and it was all she could to stand remain where she was, suddenly frightened by the babe in front of her.

When Eriol spoke again, blood rushed up into her cheeks and she cast a sideways glance at the older boy.

"I was just trying to make her laugh. Really."

Had she done something wrong? She hadn't meant to.

DivineSaturn

Eriol nodded in agreement, not taking much notice to Viviana's active squeals. "Yeah. I like readin new books, but it's fun ta read one'f yer ol' fav'rites sometimes."

Suddenly Viviana felt the hand she was holding tense up, and that made her more uncomfortable still. She wasn't scared enough to start crying, but she did know that something wasn't right and her face screwed up, filled with anxiety. Outrcy, equally anxious, was madly blowing air and trying to ward people away from Vivi, but it wasn't working quite the way he wanted it to.

"S'okay," Eriol replied to Marie's final statement. "Y'can never really tell what she's gonna do. But she's okay, I think."

And if she wasn't it wasn't like Eriol knew what to do about it anyway. So why worry?

Green_Eyes

"Exactly," Marie nodded and smiled shyly, pleased to have found somebody who enjoyed books as much as she did.

Then, her blue eyes widened in fright at the site of Vivi's troubled face. She hadn't imagined the babe's reaction to be anything of this sort and the blonde girl couldn't resist the urge to free her finger from Viviana's grasp.

After taking a step back, Marie swallowed and peered up at Eriol, entirely convinced the she'd done something wrong in spite of the older boy's reassurance.

"Does she always react this way?"

Or was it just her?

confused. Her daemon wasn't pleased either, but since the potential threat had backed away, he was considerably less tense. That only made Viviana more insecure. She thought the girl was nice, if a little scary, but Outcry clearly didn't agree... or did he? It was all too much, and a small trickle of tears started flowing down the girl's cheeks.

Oblivious to the extent of his charge's distress, Eriol shrugged. "You'd probly know 'bout as much as I'd when it comes ta her. I can' read her, or understan' much of wha' she wants from me."

Admitting that fault didn't hurt Eriol as much as the others had. He was a teenage guy, not a mom. He was supposed to be interested in sports and cars (and he had some interest in the latter), not baby books and bottle feeding. Being unable to tell what a little kid (a girl even) wanted just came with being him.

Green_Eyes
Marie was swiftly crumbling under the force of her feelings; frustration at the babe for being how she was, frustration at Eriol for not know knowing what to do, but, most of all, frustration (and a bit of anger) at herself for being the cause of such distress.

Desperate to fix what she had done and guessing that a storybook, her first option, wouldn't calm Viviana, Marie began to hum. It was a soft, sweet sound that didn't faulter as she reached forwards and gently wiped the tears from the baby's delicate cheeks.

Please, she thought, let this work.

DivineSaturn

And surprisingly, once Viviana heard the sweet sounds coming from the strange girl, she did start to calm down. Her whimpers quieted, her face relaxed, and the flow of tears stopped cold. Of course, she wasn't totally convinced that nothing bad was going to happen. But the music was enough to distract her from her former tension. For his part, Outcry let out a soft croon, as if attempting to join in the song. Or voice his approval, or lack thereof.

"Not bad," Eriol commented with a hint of admiration. The girl liked books AND she could carry a tune. If she was a little older, and not so skittish... well, he could dream.

Still, there was the question of why she started humming at all. "You jus like ta sing, or what?"

Green_Eyes
Viviana finally camed and Marie slowly let out a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding in.

All of her earlier frustrations were forced out of her body by an overwhelming feeling of joy. She had been able to mend whatever damage she'd caused, after all!

It took Marie a minute to reply to Eriol, for she was a bit cautious about pausing. What if Viviana started crying again?

With a bit of alarm, Marie thought about what she would do if she had to hum to the babe for the rest of her life... or until Viviana grew too hold to be comforted by such a noise.

"Thanks," she beamed at Eriol when she was finally confident that Viviana wouldn't burst into tears again.

She didn't even need to think about the answer to his next question.

"My mother hums to my little sister whenever she's upset," she shrugged, "I thought it might be worth a try."

Viviana was a bit disappointed when the humming came to an end, but she didn't show it. Any damage had been repaired, and she came to the realization that any person who made sounds that were pretty couldn't be bad, even though sometimes it looked scary. While Outcry wasn't sure he agreed, he ceased his own variant of music when Marie did.

"Oh." And in his total oblivion Eriol hadn't even noticed anything wrong. How the heck was he supposed to tell when the squirt and squirtier weren't happy? He couldn't speak babytalk.

But then, Marie didn't seem to be that much of a kid, and she understood. Maybe it was a girl thing. His sisters all adored Viviana, and none of them had problems. "You got sisters too? How d'ya tell when they're needin stuff, or somethin? I can' tell 'er happy from 'er hungry half the time."

Green_Eyes
Viviana had calmed down! Marie felt like she could yell and scream for joy. Indeed, she was that happy. She settled for a pat on the back, proud of herself for easing the babe's mind.

"You mean..." she paused and stared at him with wide eyes, utterly stunned, "You didn't know something was wrong?"

Marie couldn't hold back a giggle. So that explained why he hadn't helped her before. Her earlier frustration to wards him was now very funny, at least, to her.

"I have four sisters," she told him as-a-matter-of-factly and then continued with a smile on her face, "There's only one that's too little to tell us what she wants and ma deals with her most of the time. I suppose it might just be a mom thing. I got lucky with Viviana. Maybe... you have to practice?"

DivineSaturn

Eriol frowned for a moment. He didn't appreciate being laughed at; after all, it wasn't like totally cool guys were regularly taught childcare. But he let it go, forcing a sort of smile. It wouldn't do any good to get mad at a kid like Marie, who probably didn't mean any harm.

"I've got a buncha sisters too, but none've 'em are as little as Viv. 'Cept one, but yeah, Mom takes care've her. I used ta help with my brother when 'e was little, but... Iunno, boys an girls are diff'rent I guess." And that was becoming more and more clear with each passing moment.

That completely settled it. Anyone who laughed was a good person. The big man who took care of her laughed when other people talked to him, and then he would play with her more, or give her something yummy like bananas. And the other people at home laughed too, mostly. So anyone who did that was good.

As what may have been a show of good faith, Viviana extended her hand again, opening and closing her fist as she did so. Her mood wasn't damp anymore, and she wanted to see and feel what else the girl was like.

Observing this behavior as best he could, Eriol shrugged. "Lotsa practice, I'd say. Eeesh."

Green_Eyes
The frown that passed across Eriol's face surprised her and Marie stopped giggling almost instantly. What could she have done wrong? Then, he smiled and she smiled back, a bit awkardly, but it was a smile, nontheless.

"They are," she nodded in agreement, "but they can be similar too. You and I both like books, and I don't really like to play with dolls. Although, I do have a teddy-bear named Winifred but I don't consider her a doll... You don't like to play with dolls, do you?"

It was her attempt at some light humor and she laughed again to let him know, hoping that he wouldn't take offense.

Viviana's outstetched hand caught her attention and Marie's eyes widened in surprise. Had the babe forgiven her, then?

The girl smiled and slowly (so as not to frighten her) offered her finger to Viviana. Perhaps they could be friends, after all.

"Well," she sighed and grinned sideways at Eriol, "you'll get better with practice and then, everything will be easier."

DivineSaturn

The first thing that came out of Eriol's mouth was an emphatic "no!" Of course he didn't like dolls! He had one or two stuffed toys that he used more as pillows than anything else, but those totally didn't count. Then he realized that Marie was laughing- not at him, but making a joke- and started to laugh too, if uneasily.

Crinkling her fingers lightly around the girl's extended digit, Viviana gave a sleepy smile and let out a soft "ahhh" noise.

"She fallin' asleep?" Eriol frowned a moment, then shrugged. "Guess I should get her home soon, eh."

Green_Eyes
When he laughed a very large and very pleased grin split Marie's face in two. So many accomplishments in one day! She was delighted with herself. Perhaps socializing wasn't so terrible, after all.

"That might be a good idea," Marie nodded sadly, dissapointed that Eriol and Viviana had to go so soon. She'd grown quite fond of both of them.

A delighted squeal erupted from the bunny child and she pointed eagerly at the kitchen window. The swift movement knocked Green's hand away from Rose's giggling mouth and the spoon and the bowl of baby food splattered to the floor. Frustrated, Green grumbled and turned to see what the excitement was about.

There was nothing there. Her brow knotted with confusion.

Worried, Green cast a sideways glance at the baby. Rose blinked at her and then looked to the window again. She laughed and slapped her hands against the table of the highchair.

With a shake of her head, Green collected the bowl and spoon, dumped them in the sink and returned with a wet cloth. While she cleaned up the mess of baby food she vaguely wondered why it had to be such a disgusting and pale color. A part of her wasn't at all shocked that Rose had refused to eat the liquid peas.

The entire time, Rose giggled insanely. At one point, snot flew out her nose and with a chuckle, Green wiped it away with the bib that was wrapped loosely around the baby's neck. Snot free and unphased, Rose leaned forwards in her seat and tried to get a better look out the window.

There was a strange noise, similar to that of a dog's barking, but not quite right.

Troubled, Green went to the window and searched the vast farmyard for any sign of whatever might have been causing Rose's glee. Something blonde and something purple passed into her line of vision for just a moment and with a sudden realization, Green flung open the window and leaned over the side.

"What're you two doing?" she demanded. Marie and Nyx -with a blush and a smirk- stood slowly and stepped out from their hiding place. Nyx tried to catch Marie's eye, but the small girl ignored her and crossed her arms.

"Rose was giggling away over there," Green gestured in the direction of the bunny child with a wild wave of her hand, "and I was worried she was hallucinating... Or... Or something. What were you doing that made her so happy, anyways? Mind you, she's almost always happy... I've never seen a happier baby in my life-

Nyx cleared her throat to end her mother's pointless rambling and waved a puppet covered hand in Green's face. She squeazed and a high, mechanical barking came from it.

"Oh!" Green sighed and smacked her hand against her forehead, "I should have guessed."

"Marie's got the cat," Nyx said and scratched her nose.

"The cat was always my favorite," Green nodded and looked at the little girl. Marie smiled weakly and waved her left hand to show off the puppy that was as equally old and pathetic looking as the dog.

After a small pause Green asked, "Where'd you find those?"

"Marie found them in a box down in the basement," Nyx announced. Green looked to the smaller girl for confirmation. Marie shrugged.

"Its dark down there!" Green protested, shocked that Marie, of all her children, was the only one who dared venture into the darkness of their horrible basement. She had yet to get a proper light fixture down there!

"It is," Marie giggled and handed her puppet over to Green who took it with a smile. She could recall moments from her past when she and her brother had played with them. Puppet shows had been her favorite childhood game.

"There are more, somewhere," Green spoke thoughtfully and searched her memory for any clue as to where she'd put them as Nyx tossed her the dog. She caught it with ease and mentioned that her brother had taken the dragon puppet, for it had been his favorite, before waving the girls off.

Immediately upon Green's return to the highchair Rose, who had been fussing for the last three minutes and wasn't at all interested in food anymore, lunged for the puppets in Green's arms.

With a laugh Green gave them to the bunny child and Rose, beaming from ear to ear, stuffed the dog's tail into her mouth.

"I really should clean those before you get sick," Green sighed, snatched the cat up and moved to take the dog from Rose. The baby shook her head wildly in disagreement and smacked Green's hands away.

"None of that," Green snapped and gently tugged the puppet away. Shocked, Rose threw her head back and wailed.

"Hush," Green rolled her eyes and pushed the newly cleaned kangaroo plushie towards the bunny child. Rose sniffed and grudgingly took the toy but stubbornly refused to chew on it.

~

Over the course of the summer Green had found it increasingly difficult to put Rose to sleep. The baby always insisted on going to bed and waking up with the sun. Therefore, Green's sleep schedule had become very irregular and her mood was likewise affected. Her older children did their very best to avoid their mother whenever they could for none of them (save for Nyx who had always had a bit of an attitude) dared to challenge her authority when she was moody.

"You're impossible," Nyx had growled at her mother only that evening after Green had rudely pointed out that Marie ought to spend more time with the family instead of, well, wherever she was. The poor, little girl had looked up from her bowl of soup with a hurt expression but didn't reply and merely continued to eat her supper.

It was for the well-being of her children and the relationships she shared with each of them that had Green trying out and testing new techniques that would put Rose to sleep earlier.

She'd sung to the child until her voice was hoarse and her throat felt raw. She'd sat down in a rocking chair and rocked the baby only to have dozens of strands of her long hair tugged out. Hell, she'd even tried buckets of warm milk.

Unfortunately, nothing had worked.

Now, Green was working at her fourth and so far unsuccessful attempt.

The light that streamed in through the lone window in Rose's little room made reading easy. However, Green was having difficulty getting the baby to pay very close attention to the story of Hanzel and Gretel. Rose gurgled, cooed and chewed on her little fist with joy. Her big brown eyes danced across the room and the pictures in the storybook that Green showed to her every time she finished a page. However, the bunny child remained completely immune to the effect Green hoped the various stories would have had on her.

To her it seemed like her mother had been droning on and on about nothing for hours.

Suddenly, the sound of Green's monotonous voice was replaced by another, entirely foreign one. Rose's ears twitched in the direction of the noise as the little gears inside her head tried to determine the name of the sound.

Moments later, her bedroom door was opened and Rose twisted her head around to welcome whoever had entered. Marie stood in the doorway. Pleased to see her older sister, Rose giggled a hello and then frowned when Marie put a finger to her lips and told the toddler to 'shhh'.

Why should she 'shhh'? What was 'shhhshhing', anyways?

Rose stared at Marie with a confused expression. What was going on here?

At the moment Marie was gently poking their mother in the shoulder.

"She snores so loud," Marie chuckled and exited the room, returning moments later with two blankets tucked under her arms and a couple of pins clamped between her teeth.

She draped one blanket around her mother and used the other one to block the light from the sun. After a few moments of struggling and one curse (a habit she'd picked up from Nyx) Marie's task was finally finished.

Rose was stunned into silence by the sudden darkness that consumed her bedroom.

"There," Marie sighed and leaned over the edge of the cradle in order to kiss her baby sister on the forehead, "maybe you'll both get some sleep."
