After you add my friend code, go to the Mii channel. Select "Send Mii". Then find your Mii, press A and B to grab him and drag him to the envelope at the top of the screen. You should be able to figure it out from there.

In the Mii channel, on the right, select the Mii Friend. Then drag and drop your Mii into the envelope at the top. Then select my address in the address book and it should work.
