Rachel smiled at him, and if she had been the hugging type, she would have gone over and given him a big hug right then. As it was though, she remained where she was and reached down, petting the dog again, instead. At least someone would benefit from her good feelings for the moment.
"It really means a lot to have a friend like you Lucas," she said, finally. "I don't know that I ever had any 'real' friends before I came here. I hope that I can be as good a friend to you as you are being to me. I don't know how much help I can be to you with things, but I promise to try if you ask me."

"If you can help me with something I'll let you know," he smiled and nodded.
Dasher certainly enjoyed the attention. Tail wagging, batting lightly against her foot. However, after a moment the dog stood and walked to the door. He then began to scratch at it, sending Lucas looks. "That better mean you just need to go out and not another walk. Excuse me," he said to Rachel as he stood. Moving to the door, the dog run out as it opened to find himself a spot. Thankfully it was just a bathroom break and not a walk.

Rachel watched the dog's sudden movement towards the door with curiosity. She made a small "o" of realization with her mouth though, when she noticed his urgency. As Lucas let Dasher out, Rachel moved to stand and followed them out the door.
"Well, it looks like you have something to take care of...and I should probably be getting to a few things myself, so I think I'll head off now. Thank you again." Rachel wasn't exactly sure what kinds of things she might do, but she thought one of them might involve at least walking past the construction site, if not staying around to find out more - provided Billy wasn't around. She waved a goodbye to Lucas and started walking off.
"I guess I'll see you around then," she said, with a smile. "And thank you again!"

"You're welcome, Rachel. If you need anything feel free to call me or drop by." He hoped things would get better for the girl. In some way.
Returning the wave, he smiled until she was a distance away. The smile faded and he let out a heavy sigh. He felt so drained now. Bringing the dog back inside, he locked up, then lied back down on his bed. He grabbed the book he'd been reading before and tried to concentrate, but he was still on the same page after over a half hour had passed.
This wasn't working.
